Behind the music - Pete Philly & Perquisite

Amsterdam hip hop duo Pete Philly & Perquisite have released their new single, Raindrop. We asked Pete the BIG questions . . . Pete and Philly have also released a live video for the song, the closing track from their 2024 album Eon, which documents Pete's personal struggles with Lyme disease. Aruba-born vocalist Pete and Dutch producer Perquisite first gained international success in the mid-2000s with their blend of hip hop, jazz and soul and released the albums Mindstate and Mystery Repeats. After a 14-year hiatus working on separate projects, they reunited last year to release Eon and tour Europe. Tell us three things about yourself . . . I'm multidisciplinary, multilingual and multicultural. How would you describe your music? Soulful sounds, spiritually inclined, self-reflective, as much of an eclectic hybrid as I am myself, dynamic and gorgeous. Who are your musical inspirations? Miles Davis, Nirvana, Ella Fitzgerald, Michael Jackson, De La Soul, Jimi Hendrix, Busta Rhymes, Lauryn Hill, Charlie Chaplin, Missy Elliot, Bob Marley, Thomas Newman, Method Man, Arrested Development, Pearl Jam, Black Thought, Sting, Mos Def, Pharoahe Monch, Stevie Wonder, Queen, James Brown, SnoopDogg, Redman, George Michael, Louis Armstrong, Jill Scott, The Pharcyde, Leonard Bernstein, DangerDoom. I could go on, many greats to be grateful for. What was the first gig you ever went to? Beastie Boys. What was the first record you ever bought? Michael Jackson - Thriller. What's your favourite song right now? Slap The Stick - Pete & Bas. Favourite lyric of all time? That's an unfair question. I love words and poetry too much for that.. I'll say a top three that comes up right now: Mos Def - Love, Common - A Beautiful Chicago Kid, Amir Sulaiman - We Must Win. If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be? D'Angelo - The Root or Jacob Collier - Hideaway. Where can people find your music/more information? Instagram and our website. Alan Corr
