Neighbors helping neighbors: Gordon receives outpouring of support after storm damage
A bad situation seems to have brought out the best in people.
Days after an F-1 tornado touched down in Gordon, community donations, clean-up and other support were still flowing in.
According to the school district, the Longhorns suffered a near-total loss — football field, track, bleachers, field house, scoreboards, sports equipment, weight room and concession stand, all destroyed.
As members of the Gordon baseball team took the field Thursday night for their playoff game against Perrin-Whitt, a special thing took place.
Both teams gathered around home plate, as the Pirates presented their adversaries a gift and donation in the ultimate display of humanity and sportsmanship.
Garner ISD athletes earlier this week collected monetary donations Wednesday and Thursday to help replace athletic equipment and raised $500 from Longhorn to Longhorn.
Student-athletes from Huckabay and Abilene Christian schools came to help clean up the community. Residents of Dublin brought a trailer full of water, Gatorade and snacks. Members of the Tarleton State football team chipped in bagging and removing debris.
Strawn ISD extended an invitation for Longhorns to come and take part in their Field Day.
Taco Casa staff from Santo and corporate offices provided tacos, burritos, chips and tea.
The Texas Rangers Foundation also pitched in, donating hundreds of baseballs, four pitching machines and bats and gloves.
Due to extensive water damage to the school building, Gordon ISD Thursday announced that school would close for the remainder of the academic year.
"The weight of it all really hit today as the shock started to wear off," according to the district statement. "We're heartbroken for our school and community — but we're also grateful that we still have ways to come together before the year officially ends.
We'll be finalizing details for next week soon and will share them with you once they're set. Thanks for being so supportive and understanding as we work through this."
The district also noted the athletic facility will require a complete rebuild.
