Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield Named 'Most Underrated Quarterback'

Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield Named 'Most Underrated Quarterback' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has enjoyed a career resurgence that has perhaps saved his NFL life. Advertisement After a rough and inconsistent start to his NFL career, on the scrapheap at the end of 2022, Baker found the Buccaneers for the 2023 as they say, the rest is history. Two Pro Bowl nods, two division titles, a playoff win, and a career-best season in 2024 (4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns) have seen Baker save his NFL career. And now, he's finally getting the plaudits he deserves. In Pete Prisco's top 100 NFL players ahead of the 2025 season, after being unranked last year, Mayfield now jumps to No. 57. "Mayfield had his best season in 2024 with 41 touchdown passes and 4,500 yards," Prisco writes. "He might be the most underrated quarterback in the league after the slow start to his career." Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield (6) tries to avoid a tackle by Denver Broncos linebacker Nik Bonitto (15) in the fourth quarter at Raymond James Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images Is Baker underrated? There is some merit to that. But there is also merit to the fact that some are waiting for what they think will be the inevitable drop-off. Advertisement There haven't been any signs that a regression is coming from Mayfield, and as we look ahead to the 2025 season, he is surrounded by perhaps the most talented group he's ever been around. A top run game, a receiver room that is dripping with talent, and the entire offensive line from last year is returning. Those are all key ingredients to having a successful season. Of course, expectations are now higher, and a deep playoff run is needed, given the number of weapons at Baker's disposal. And if he can lead this Buccaneers team to another playoff run, and play good football in the process, he might be higher on Prisco's list come next season. NFL's Top 100 Players: Where Is Bills' MVP Josh Allen?

NFL's Top 100 Players: Where Is Bills' MVP Josh Allen? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is coming off an MVP-winning season in 2024 that saw him elevate his game yet again. Advertisement The biggest difference was the lack of turnovers, with just six interceptions in the regular season (zero in the playoffs), while posting a career-best 77.3 QBR. Yes, his numbers as a whole were down, but this was Allen playing within himself, and taking what the defense gave him, the Superman cape hardly came out. Oh, and James Cook's 16 rushing touchdowns helped, too. As we turn to 2025, CBS Sports' Pete Prisco has ranked his top 100 players in the NFL. Allen turns heads as he comes in at No. 4, behind Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley at No. 3, Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett at No. 2 and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes at No. 1. "Allen won his first MVP last season for a reason," Prisco wrote on Wednesday. "He carried the Bills to the AFC title game again, growing as a passer and a player. Next step: Win a Super Bowl." Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen (17) runs for a gain during the fourth quarter as Denver Broncos defensive end Zach Allen (99) defends in an AFC wild card game at Highmark Fisher-Imagn Images The Bills appear to be in the best spot to claim their first-ever Super Bowl, and Allen's improvement is a big reason why. Advertisement Last year showed he doesn't need a No. 1 receiver, and if he can keep the turnovers to a minimum, the Bills will always be in with a shot. Four out of the five losses last year (including playoffs) were by one score, so Buffalo didn't get blown out too often. With an improved defense and an offensive scheme that returns, Buffalo has one of the most well-rounded rosters in football, with an MVP winner leading the charge. Allen as No. 4 feels right, but get that elusive Super Bowl, and come this time next year, he might just be on top of the mountain. Eagles dominate the rankings of CBS Sports Top 100 players list

Eagles dominate the rankings of CBS Sports Top 100 players list Philadelphia Eagles land an NFL high 10 players on Pete Prisco's, CBS Sports, top 100 players of 2025 rankings Stop us if you have heard this before. The Philadelphia Eagles have endured tremendous losses from their roster, particularly on defense. It's for that reason that there is a viable reason to question whether or not Philadelphia can repeat its recent success. Suppose you've heard that one so often that you feel like ripping your insides out, fear not. You aren't alone. That angle has been bludgeoned to death since free agency began, giving new meaning to the term 'March Madness'. Sure, it's easy to determine why such conversations occur. Josh Sweat came dangerously close to winning Super Bowl MVP before Jalen Hurts threw "the dagger" to DeVonta Smith, but 'Sweaty' is gone now. The NFL's most extraordinary sack celebration will now be performed for the Arizona Cardinals in a blood-red jersey. Sweat wasn't the only player that Philadelphia lost. Darius Slay is gone. So are other valuable contributors from the 2024 roster like Isaiah Rodgers, Avonte Maddox, Oren Burks, Milton Williams, Mekhi Becton, Fred Johnson, and Kenneth Gainwell. No one denies the contributions they all made, but is it erroneous to state that Philadelphia cannot move forward in their absence? Mull that over for a second, and while you're at it, check out a recent take from CBS Sports. This might calm those nerves and put an end to overworked narratives. One bold take could silence all doubts about the Eagles' roster We all love lists. We love rankings. CBS' senior sports writer Pete Prisco offered a good one recently. His top 100 NFL players of 2025 is a must-read. Birds fans will enjoy seeing that he has added ten of the good guys to the ranking: Saquon Barkley (ranked third), Lane Johnson (12), Jordan Mailata (13), and Jalen Carter (17) all landed among the top 20. A.J. Brown (31) and Zack Baun (40) also crack the top 50. The rest of the top 100 is rounded out by Jalen Hurts (52), Quinyon Mitchell (69), Landon Dickerson (72), and Cooper DeJean. DeVonta Smith and Cam Jurgens are among the obvious snubs, but you get the idea. Despite the losses, Philadelphia is still loaded with talent. Sure, replacing guys will be tough, but it isn't impossible. Besides, most NFL squads attempt to navigate this same challenge every season. Signing the best talent to long-term deals is a great way to stock the cupboard. Philadelphia is still impressive on paper. That's obvious, and thanks to shrewd drafting and low-risk, high-reward signings, they should be back in the mix for another title run during the coming football season.

Steelers Signing 'Filet Mignon' Aaron Rodgers Makes QB Room a 'Meat Market'

Steelers Signing 'Filet Mignon' Aaron Rodgers Makes QB Room a 'Meat Market' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Steelers QB room, it seems, is now a meat market. The Aaron Rodgers signing is the biggest news in the NFL this week, and of course everyone now has an opinion about it. Advertisement And as it relates to the media? There is a concerned effort for that opinion to stand out by making it a colorful one. Oh, and by trashing other QBs who are going to be in that room whenever the faded four-time NFL MVP Rodgers shows up to sign his one-year rental contract. Welcome to the NFL, Will Howard. NFL analyst Pete Prisco's evaluation of the situation as it relates to the 41-year-old Rodgers signing on to take over what was possibly going to be a competition between the rookie Howard and journeyman Mason Rudolph? "Well, they spent the entire off-season watching Hamburger Helper playing quarterback, and now they're getting filet mignon," Prisco said. "Of course they're happy about it.'' Advertisement See? Colorful. But is it accurate? "I mean, if you saw Mason Rudolph and Will Howard were gonna be your quarterbacks, you know that they weren't gonna win games,'' Prisco continued. "Mike Tomlin's streak of non-losing seasons was over if they played with those guys. We all knew it, the players knew it, they were waiting on Rodgers. "Rogers comes in there, all of a sudden now, they're rejuvenated." To be frank, that is a wildly hopeful assertion. Howard, who won a national championship last season at Ohio State, was a sixth-round selection; he is what he is. Rudolph? To a great degree, same thing. "Hamburger Helper''? That seems cruel. Advertisement But it's the automatic assumptions about Rodgers that seem off-base. With Rodgers - dumped by the New York Jets and coveted by no team other than Pittsburgh via free agency - officially planning on joining the Steelers, coach Tomlin is surely planning on another winning season and maybe another playoff berth. But to be frank: Nobody who has watched Rodgers do his thing off the field or on the field in the last three years thinks of him as "filet mignon.''
