Shock in Co. Down after body found on beach
THERE is shock in a Northern Irish village after a body was found on a local beach. PSNI officers were called to reports of a body on Millisle Beach in Co. Down yesterday afternoon. The body was discovered on Millisle Beach in Co. Down Reports claim a local dog walker spotted the body and alerted the authorities. Local UUP Councillor Pete Wray, who represents Ards and North Down, confirmed the finding in a statement on social media. 'Sadly, I can confirm that a body has been found on Millisle Beach,' he said. 'Initial reports indicate the body has been brought in from the sea.' He added: 'PSNI remain at the scene, and I would ask everyone to give them the time and space to conduct their investigation. 'My thoughts and prayers are with the family who will be impacted by this and the individual who found the body.' DUP MLA Peter Martin has also paid tribute following the shocking discovery. 'A police investigation is underway in Millisle following the discovery of a body on the beach,' he said in a statement. 'My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the individual at this difficult time.' He added: 'Emergency services are on the scene and a cordon is in place to allow a full investigation to take place. 'I would urge folks to avoid the Donaghadee Road area at present. 'We do not know further details at this time and speculation would not be helpful to potentially bereaved friends or family members.' In a statement, the PSNI confirmed an investigation is now underway. 'The body found on the beach in the Donaghadee Road area of Millisle on Wednesday, May 21 has been removed from the scene,' they said. Emergency services rushed to Milisle beach in County Down, Northern Ireland, on May 21 with a joint response of police, forensics, and coastguard units spotted at the scene. Locals and others planning to visit the beach have been told to avoid the area by Police Service Northern Ireland (PSNI) representatives while investigations are ongoing, after councillors suggested the body was "brought in from the sea". The Mirror reports that Pete Wray, a local councillor for UUP, said PSNI would need "time and space" to conduct the investigation, adding that his "thoughts and prayers" would be "with the family who will be impacted". SEPARATE INCIDENT It comes after two people were rushed to hospital on Saturday, May 17 after a car was driven into a crowd of drinkers at a pub in the same town. The PSNI received a report at around 11.05pm that a car had collided with a number of people outside a licensed premises on Main Street. Advertisement Detective Inspector Oonagh Ryan said: "It was reported that the vehicle involved turned around and drove past the licensed premises again before making off from the scene. "Officers, along with colleagues from NIAS attended the scene and two people were taken to hospital for treatment of their injuries, which have been described as serious." The car was later discovered outside Walkers Lane in the town. Cops in Millisle arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder and driving offences following the incident. The 47-year-old has since been released on bail to allow for further enquiries to be carried out, the PSNI said. Police detain man following major firearms incident in Bangor
The area has been cordoned off Police have detained a man following a major firearms incident in the High Street area of Bangor. It's understood that shots were fired and a standoff ensued as a result. Around 30 heavily armed officers were at the scene of the incident. UUP Councillor for Ards Peninsula Pete Wray confirmed that the armed male has since been detained. The man is being attended to by the Ambulance Service. 'Male has been detained and the area is safe,' Mr Wray said. 'It's been a challenging weekend for the PSNI in Ards and North Down, and I thank them for their service as always.'
