Don't miss out on the headlines from Confidential. Followed categories will be added to My News. Veteran TV journo Ray Martin thought he'd have to be dead to have an award created in his name. In a major nod to the 80-year-old's work, the Ray Martin Logie Award for Most Popular News or Public Affairs Reporter will honour the best of the best at Australian television's big awards night. 'I thought you had to be a horse or a dead politician, to be honest, to make it on a stamp. And I thought much the same as this,' Martin, who has five Gold Logies among his 14 in total, joked to Confidential. Tara Brown and Peter Overton are nominees for the Ray Martin Award for Most Popular News or Public Affairs Presenter. Picture: Richard Dobson 'So it's very hard to be recognised among a whole bunch of colleagues for whom I have great respect … To be chosen is a wonderful honour.' The new category will sit alongside longstanding tributes to other legends of the small screen, including the Graham Kennedy Award for Most Popular New Talent and the Bert Newton Award for Most Popular Presenter. The TV Week Logie Awards will be held at The Star on August 3. Nominated in the inaugural batch of his namesake category are David Speers, Ally Langdon, Michael Usher, Peter Overton, Sarah Ferguson and Tara Brown. 'I wish I was a journalist starting out today,' Martin said. 'The range of things you can do is enormous. But they need to write better … I get it because the pressure of time is so great, you don't always have the time to sit and think about the lines.' Langdon is also a first-time Gold Logie nominee this year, alongside Julia Morris, Sonia Kruger, Lisa Millar, Poh Ling Yeow, Lynne McGranger and Hamish Blake. 'I think when people meet me, I am who they see on television as well and people like authenticity and I hope that is what they feel they get from me,' Millar said of her nomination. 'I don't know why I have been nominated but I tell you, I am going to bloody enjoy every minute of it.' Most popular new talent nominees are Hailey Pinto, Guy Montgomery, Jenny Tian, Kate Miller-Heidke, Kylah Day and Sofia Levin, while Kruger, Blake and Morris back up their gold nomination with a nod in the most popular presenter category alongside Ricki-Lee Coulter, Todd Woodbridge and Zan Rowe. The 2025 red carpet and ceremony will this year will be broadcast on Channel 7 with comedian Sam Pang returning as host.
