Create Account Vancouver Police said 34-year-old Peterhans Nungu was released from hospital Tuesday morning and must live in the city under house arrest. He was charged with assault causing bodily harm following the attack near the entrance to Stanley Park in Coal Harbour during the early morning hours of April 15. On April 23, he was granted bail and released from police custody by a provincial court judge but was transferred to a hospital where he was under medical supervision until Tuesday morning. Cops added the accused can only leave the unknown city residence for work or a medical appointment. 'Officers within the operations division and the special investigation section will monitor Nungu during his release for compliance with all court conditions,' police said in a statement. 'Anyone with information about alleged breaches of these bail conditions is asked to contact police immediately.' Nungu was also charged April 13 after police in nearby Surrey alleged he uttered threats and assaulted an officer. RECOMMENDED VIDEO Last month, the victim explained in great detail the savage attack she endured and shared images of her injuries to her TikTok account. 'While visiting Vancouver and walking along the sea wall after dinner, a man I had never seen before decided to try and end my life,' the woman wrote. 'I hope he rots.' She also posted images of a bloodied pair of AirPods, her bloodstained purse and a shattered phone. The woman said she was attacked multiple times before running toward a group of people who were actually plainclothes police officers. A suspect was immediately arrested. In a Tuesday new release, police said Nungu was granted bail and released from police custody on April 23, but was transferred to a secure medical facility where he was under medical supervision. Police said he was released from there on Tuesday and will be living under house arrest in Vancouver. Nungu's bail conditions include that he cannot contact the victim, possess weapons, or consume alcohol and drugs. He is under around-the-clock house arrest unless he has permission to leave for work or a medical appointment, police said. In a video posted to TikTok last month, a woman said she was walking not far from her hotel in Coal Harbour when a man said something to her, ran at her, grabbed her jacket and threw her to the ground. She said she was able to fight the man off and get away, but he continued his pursuit. The woman said he smashed her phone when she tried to call 911 and started striking her in the head, adding that at one point she blacked out. CBC News contacted the TikTok user after the video was posted, but did not hear back. The B.C. Prosecution Service confirmed last month that a person with the same name as Nungu was charged in Surrey on April 14 with assault of a peace officer, uttering a threat to cause death or bodily harm to another person and uttering a threat to cause damage to property. He appeared in court that day and was released.

A scheduled court appearance for the man accused of brutally attacking a tourist on Vancouver's seawall last month was adjourned Monday because he remains in hospital. Peterhans Nungu is charged with assault causing bodily harm in the April 15 attack. Nungu's mother told Global News her son was agitated and off the medications he was taking following a mental health crisis a year earlier. He was arrested and released the next day on six conditions, which barred him from going to his home. 'He's supposed to be in the hospital not in the jail,' Nungu Magdalene said in a previous interview. 'He was released and thrown to the streets with restrictions not to go to his house.' 1:47 Woman randomly attacked on seawall But hours later, Nungu was arrested again, this time in relation to the attack on the seawall near Coal Harbour. Story continues below advertisement That incident left a Toronto woman with a broken nose, black eyes and cuts and bruises to her face and body. Nungu was subsequently ordered to live with his mother at her Vancouver housing co-op under strict conditions, including 24/7 house arrest. However, as of Monday he remains under medical care. Nungu's next court appearance is May 22 in Surrey on the domestic violence charges, followed by a May 20 appearance in Vancouver in connection with the alleged stranger attack.
