Onzon Thai, (Onzon translates as "amazing") have said they are "returning home". Established in 2014, Onzon Thai was founded by Chanya Slorach, 41, and her husband Hugo Slorach. Chanya hails from Bueng Khong Long, close to the Mekong River in northeastern Thailand, where she perfected the art of Thai food. Hugo grew up in Penarth, where the family live with their young family. During the Covid lockdowns they operated Onzon Thai from Penarth, renting a commercial kitchen for takeaways after being forced to shut their other beauty businesses. After 18 months of feeding thousands, it was clear that Onzon Thai couldn't continue to meet demand without permanent premises to expand. Cardiff coffee favourites to take over iconic Pettigrew Tearooms A much-loved Cardiff-based coffee business is set to take over Bute Park's iconic Pettigrew Tearooms. Brodie's Coffee Co are taking over Pettigrew Tearooms Cardiff-born coffee company, Brodie's Coffee Co, has announced it will be taking over the Pettigrew Tearooms in Bute Park this Summer. In January 2025, Pettigrew Tearooms announced they will be closing down after 13 years of operating in their iconic Grade II West Lodge location. The tearooms are best known for serving afternoon teas, breakfast, lunches, in-house baking seven days a week and friendly staff, who will be joining the Brodie's Coffee Co team as part of the transition. Brodie's Coffee Co was founded by partners Ian and Danni Brodie, both aged 39, who hope to bring a new lease of life to the castle walls. They're best known for their coffee hut in Gorsedd Gardens just outside the National Museum Cardiff. From superstar gigs to cosy pubs, find out What's On in Wales by signing up to our newsletter here Ian Brodie said: "We're really excited to have the opportunity to breathe new life into an iconic Cardiff building and have the tea rooms team join us as we start this next chapter. "Whilst we don't have a timeframe just yet, our goal is to be up and running by the summer so people can enjoy the beautiful outdoor space! (The inside will also be beautiful for the incredibly unlikely scenario of a wet Welsh summer). Brodie's Coffee Co are hoping to open by the summer Article continues below "The offering will be similar with our other shops as we navigate the change but with the huge benefit of having a kitchen here we hope to expand our options in the future." The pair set up their first coffee shop inside a campervan back in 2013 and since then opened three permanent locations in Cardiff. They first opened a site in Gorsedd Gardens in 2016 (next to the museum), then Bricks n Mortar on North Road in 2019 and most recently in Heath Park in 2024. The Brodies have been together since they were aged 18 and were inspired to build their own coffee company after returning from backpacking abroad in New Zealand and Australia. They noticed the coffee there was 'so much better than anything they could find at home'. Founders, Ian and Danni Brodie, both aged 39 Ian Brodie made the "exciting" announcement to his 8,000 followers on Instagram. The post reads: "We are beyond thrilled to announce that imminently we will be taking over the Pettigrew Tearooms in Bute Park! "This iconic building and the tearooms form some of our very first memories of al fresco coffee in Cardiff so when we found out that the tearooms were closing after 12 years at exactly the time that Bricks was closing there was a genuine feeling of serendipity about the whole thing… so we threw our name into the mix. "We are really happy to be bringing across the tearoom team to join us with all of their expertise and once the i's are dotted and t's are crossed, they will be joining us at our other shops whilst we 'Brodify' the inside with an all new bar and seating area and plenty of nods towards the history of this iconic building. "We can't provide dates just yet as there are still a lot of things out of our control but we have BIG plans for the space and we can't wait to get started. "Until we get the keys, Pettigrew tearooms will continue to do what they do best every day, so pop in for a slice of Pettigrew while you still can. "As always we will track the progress for the new space on socials and are eternally grateful for all of our team and customers who have supported us throughout our journey. "Pettigrew is a Cardiff institution that leaves gargantuan shoes to fill but we'll do our best to make this next chapter in the history of West Lodge a fun one. "And we're calling it? Brodies On The Wall." You'll still be able to get Pettigrew goodies at their bakeries around the capital and Brodies will also be announcing their tearoom offering in due course (Image: John Myers ) Pettigrew, which has bakeries in Victoria Park, Roath Garage, Castle Arcade and will soon be opening another in Rhiwbina, is owned by David Le Masurier. In a post shared at the start of April he and the team thanked customers for the "outpouring of love and kindness" and said on Instagram: "When we opened Pettigrew Tea Rooms in 2012, our goal was to create a special experience and destination that people would travel to visit. Our success has always been that we are run by passionate, creative, independent business people who truly understand our parks and green spaces and can make a commercial offering that supports jobs and maintains services in Bute Park for visitors and residents alike."
