Peyto Exploration & Development's (TSE:PEY) Dividend Will Be CA$0.11

Peyto Exploration & Development Corp. (TSE:PEY) has announced that it will pay a dividend of CA$0.11 per share on the 14th of March. This means the annual payment is 8.0% of the current stock price, which is above the average for the industry. View our latest analysis for Peyto Exploration & Development A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. At the time of the last dividend payment, Peyto Exploration & Development was paying out a very large proportion of what it was earning and 126% of cash flows. This is certainly a risk factor, as reduced cash flows could force the company to pay a lower dividend. Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 87.6%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 45%, which would make us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend, despite the levels currently being quite high. Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of CA$1.20 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of CA$1.32. Dividend payments have been growing, but very slowly over the period. The dividend has seen some fluctuations in the past, so even though the dividend was raised this year, we should remember that it has been cut in the past. Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. Peyto Exploration & Development has impressed us by growing EPS at 9.7% per year over the past five years. EPS has been growing at a reasonable rate, although with most of the profits being paid out to shareholders, growth prospects could be more limited in the future. Overall, we don't think this company makes a great dividend stock, even though the dividend wasn't cut this year. While we generally think the level of distributions are a bit high, we wouldn't rule it out as becoming a good dividend payer in the future as its earnings are growing healthily. We don't think Peyto Exploration & Development is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus. Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. For example, we've picked out 3 warning signs for Peyto Exploration & Development that investors should know about before committing capital to this stock.
