Manny Pacquiao can beat Barrios via knockout

Retired two-division champion Gerry Peñalosa believes Manny Pacquiao remains capable of scoring a knockout when he takes on WBC world welterweight champion Mario Barrios on July 19 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The Filipino boxing icon had set the world abuzz when news broke out that he would make a comeback at 46 years old. And while Peñalosa admitted that he is also worried for his friend, he nevertheless sees that Pacquiao still has the tools to become a world champion again. "Manny will prepare for this and he will make sure he has the stamina to last for twelve rounds," Peñalosa said in an exclusive interview. "If he hits Barrios, good night. Manny has power, the fight is for twelve rounds, he still has speed, and gloves are small. What if Manny hits him first? Boxing is over." Pacquiao last saw action in 2021 when he dropped a unanimous decision loss to Yordenis Ugas. He only figured in a couple of exhibitions since that fateful night, raising concerns from both fans and industry insiders about his comeback. For Peñalosa, Pacquiao has always been about taking risks in and out of the ring. "Manny is willing to take risks. He is worth watching because he doesn't care as long as he hits his opponent. If he gets there first, then the fight might be over in one round," Peñalosa quipped. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Why Gerry Peñalosa chose to co-promote with Kameda for Kenneth Llover

Former two-division champion Gerry Peñalosa has elaborated why he partnered with Kameda Promotions for top Pinoy prospect Kenneth Llover. Peñalosa is the Filipino boxer's promoter, while Llover, 14-0 with 9 knockouts, has been on the radar of recognizable international promotions such as Ohashi Promotions and Treasure Boxing Promotion following his back-to-back first-round stoppage victories in Japan. A hot item in the Philippine boxing scene, Peñalosa, received various offers from international handlers to promote Llover. In the end, Peñalosa picked former world champion Koki Kameda of Kameda Promotions. "All offers came from huge companies capable of giving Kenneth a break. As a former boxer, Kameda Promotions, owned by the Kameda brothers, who are all boxers, they understand boxing and the life of a boxer. That was a big plus," Peñalosa said in an exclusive interview. Before the signing, Peñalosa stressed that he is willing to work with just about anyone, but the prospective partner needs to have a laid-out plan for Llover to get a world title shot. According to Peñalosa, Kameda Promotions was able to satisfy his demands. "I saw they can give the opportunity; they have TV and sponsors," Peñalosa explained. "The good thing about Kameda is that they listen to suggestions. In two years, they will give a break or a world title. That was the assurance. Part of the contract, within two years, there would be a world title fight." —JKC, GMA Integrated News
