ASU named ‘Military Friendly School', wins Gold Award
SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — Angelo State University announced on April 15 that Victory Media had designated the university a 'Military Friendly School' for the 16th time. While maintaining this title, ASU also received a Gold Award for ranking among the top of over 80 U.S. institutions that were awarded the 'Military Friendly School' in the Large Public University category for 2025-2026. According to a press release from ASU, the university is one of five Texas institutions to win the Gold Award for this category for 2025-2026. 'Earning Military Friendly Gold status is one of the distinctions we are most proud of because it makes a tangible impact on our student body,' said ASU President Ronnie Hawkins Jr. 'We now have over 2,100 military-affiliated students enrolled at ASU, an increase of more than 750 students in the last year alone. ASU Percussion Ensemble set for spring concert performance The director of affiliated military and veteran services shared that the team strives to make sure military-affiliated students meet or exceed their goals while studying at ASU. 'At Angelo State, we stress the importance of teamwork and shared responsibility in achieving our common mission,' said Phillip Nichelson, director of affiliated military and veteran services. 'The entire ASU team works together to accomplish the mission of collective success for our military and veteran students and their families. We strive to ensure that during their time at ASU, our military-affiliated students will meet or exceed their expectations and satisfy their vision and their goals for the future.' An annual list of top Military Friendly Schools is provided to service members and their families to help them select the best university, college, or trade school that helps ensure a student's success in the classroom and after graduation. Each year, U.S. institutions are evaluated using public data sources and responses from the proprietary Military Friendly School surveys. According to ASU, over 1,8000 schools completed the annual survey and only 830 were awarded the Military Friendly School designation. ASU named a top ‘Military Spouse Friendly School' again
SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — For the eighth time, Angelo State University has been named a 'Military Spouse Friendly School' by VIQTORY and Military Spouse magazine. ASU got deemed this for creating and sustaining strong programs and policies that address the needs and concerns of military spouses and their families as students. ASU ranked No. 5 in the in the Large Public Schools category which can be seen in a special issue of Military Spouse magazine. ASU is one of the only 196 U.S schools to receive a Military Spouse Friendly School for 2024-2025. 'According to the Military Friendly website, the Military Spouse Friendly Schools list has been a reliable resource for military spouses and has set a standard for higher education institutions to provide the best post-secondary education experiences for spouses of service members since 2009,' said ASU. The way Military Spouse Friendly School list is constructed based off data collected from the annual Military Friendly survey and various federal agencies. Schools are selected based on their survey ratings and other factors such as: Academic credibility Academic support Career planning resources Flexibility Military family support services Campus support services Federal approvals Population percentages and outcomes 'We are very proud of this continued recognition, and we want military spouses to know that we will do everything in our power to ensure they and their families have the best possible experience at Angelo State,' said Phillip Nichelson, director of ASU affiliated military and veteran services. Schools that are selected have made their admissions, retention, career counseling and mentoring programs to help alleviate the difficulties faced by military spouses. 'Being a military spouse is undoubtedly the toughest job in the military,' said Nichelson. ASU's programs for military and veteran students as well as their families are overseen by the Office of Affiliated Military and Veteran Services, which can be found in the Veterans Educational and Transitional Services (VETS) Center in the Houston Harte University Center.
