GAA fan reveals Stephen Cluxton's incredible gesture that proves ‘it's important to be nice' after Dublin win vs Galway

In a letter to the Irish Times, one attendee revealed that Cluxton went out of his way to accommodate as many fans as he could. Ray Silke - a native of the Tribal County - confided that the Ballymun Kickham's veteran eventually had to be called away by a member of the Dublin backroom when the team had to leave. He wrote: "Over 70 minutes after his team had defeated Galway last Saturday in Pearse Stadium, Dublin goalkeeper Stephen Cluxton was still signing autographs, shaking hands with supporters from both teams, giving his time to young children and smiling warmly for a never-ending queue of people looking for pictures with him. Advertisement Read More on GAA "That a man with nine senior All-Ireland medals - most collected as team captain - and who has played with his county for over two decades was content to stand in the searing sun on a hard p[itch after playing a championship game to facilitate GAA supporters is a credit to Stephen and also to the culture of generosity and selflessness in the Dublin football squad. "Eventually a member of the Dubling backroom team had to come over to the goals and give him the eye - which said, 'come on Stephen, we need to get going'. "As the most decorated goalkeeper in history and the GOAT in most people's view walked away to the sanctuary of the dressing rooms, I recalled my national schoolteacher (Mrs Quinn) from 45 years ago telling her third class a really central rule for life. "'While it is nice to be important, it is more important to be nice'. Advertisement Most read in GAA Football "It is clear Mr Cluxton lives by the same truism." Victory over the Connacht champions was the perfect rebound from Dublin's Limerick GAA fans troll RTE pundit Donal Og Cusack after win over Cork Having beaten last year's Sam Maguire runners-up, the Sky Blues will continue the gauntlet when they face holders Armagh in their next game on Sunday week. Dublin last won Sam Maguire in 2023, having lost to Galway in last-year's semi-finals. Advertisement And former talisman Diarmuid Connolly urged them to assert their status as contenders by He said: 'It's an absolute unknown for Dublin. 'We don't know whether they can put back-to-back performances together. 'We haven't seen it over the last three or four years. Advertisement 'It was a good performance on Saturday against Galway. 'But if they don't back it up in two weeks' time, there will still be huge question marks about them.'

‘They've been building all year for this' – Cyril Farrell claims Galway ‘will owe Dublin one' in crunch Leinster SHC tie

FORMER Galway boss Cyril Farrell reckons the Tribe will set the record straight against Dublin. But he has warned the Sky Blues are a more formidable unit than when they ended Galway's interest in the 2024 season. 2 Galway face Dublin this weekend Credit: Piaras Ó Mídheach/Sportsfile 2 Cyril Farrell backed them to get a rare win over the Sky Blues Credit: Piaras Ó Mídheach/Sportsfile The last five Championship meetings of the teams have produced just one victory for the men in maroon. And the most recent setback came last summer in Salthill when a Dubs side managed by current Sunday's game — which is an effective Leinster SHC semi- final — will be Galway's first Championship outing at Parnell Park since the shock 3-19 to 0-24 defeat of 2019. Comprehensive victories over Antrim, Read More on GAA A draw will be enough for them to set up a rematch with the Cats in the Leinster final. Nothing less than victory for the Dubs would earn them a shot at reversing the outcome of last year's provincial decider. Farrell told SunSport: 'Galway were very poor, flat and were well beaten against Kilkenny on the first day. 'They've won all their matches since then and, OK, the opposition wouldn't be as strong as what you'd get in Munster, but Sunday should really tell them where they are. Most read in GAA Hurling 'The record against Following a two-year stint in charge of the Dubs, Donoghue departed at the end of last season and returned home for a second spell as Galway gaffer. Sharlene Mawdsley encounters unexpected headache on first trip abroad since GAA boyfriend reveal The hotseat in the capital was subsequently filled by Niall Ó Ceallacháin, who steered Na Fianna to All-Ireland Club SHC glory in January. Three round-robin wins on the bounce left his charges in good stead, only for Kilkenny to halt their march in a 5-19 to 3-21 win for the hosts at UPMC Nowlan Park last Sunday. But Farrell feels the Dubs can take encouragement from the manner in which they got back to within a couple of points after falling 16 behind. He said: 'Micheál and his management will know the Dublin lads well — but they'll be just as familiar with them too and how they like to go about their business . 'Even though it wasn't a victory, you'd have to give Dublin credit for the way they came back from being that far behind against Kilkenny. If Kilkenny get that kind of run on you, they could end up beating you by 30 points. 'But Dublin came right back into it and they were unlucky. 'You wouldn't want to be getting yourself into that kind of bother too often but there was still a lot to be said for it.' 'DIFFERENT LEVEL' Having been rested for the 6-27 to 1-14 trouncing of Antrim, the return of Cathal Mannion — who has racked up an incredible 2-35 in his three Championship outings — is set to give Galway a major boost this weekend. An All-Star in 2015, the 30-year-old forward could claim his second award a decade later if he carries his current level of form into the All-Ireland series. Farrell said: 'You could say Galway have maybe 30 hurlers who are more or less the same but he's on a different level. 'I can't see Dublin leaving him as loose as he's been in the last few games.' Parnell Park is 'a fortress' for Dublin according to Farrell, with Kilkenny the only away side to win there since the introduction of the round-robin format. But when asked if Galway can prevail, he said: 'I think they will. They've been building all year for this. They'll know more about themselves after. 'There are a few lads on the team who are pushing on a bit so they'll want to make the most of chances like this, come hell or high water .'

Kevin McStay challenges Mayo to ‘get ourselves together' for All-Ireland clash against Tyrone after shock loss to Cavan

KEVIN McSTAY challenged his Mayo players to stand up and be counted after falling to a shock home defeat to Cavan. But Breffni Blues boss Ray Galligan reckons his own stars did just that after doing a sensational job on their illustrious opponents in their own backyard. Advertisement 2 Cavan pulled off a shock win over Mayo Credit: Piaras Ó Mídheach/Sportsfile 2 Kevin McStay sounded a word of warning to his Mayo team Credit: Piaras Ó Mídheach/Sportsfile Galligan's side looked slick up front with Oisín Kiernan and Cormac O'Reilly kicking 0-4 from play each. But it was in defence where they really stepped up at MacHale Park. Until Aidan O'Shea's late green flag, the starting six Mayo forwards contributed a mere one point from play between them. First among equals in defence was Niall Carolan, who put Mayo's top threat Ryan O'Donoghue on lockdown. Advertisement Read More on GAA And now the Westerners have to pick themselves up for a trip to Tyrone on May 31 before finishing up against Donegal. Green and Red gaffer McStay groaned: 'We just weren't at the pitch of it today. 'We really have to get ourselves together for this challenge against Tyrone. Morale swings up and down and that's the nature of sport. But our job is to get after them now and bring the troops together.' Mayo were competitive in the Connacht final defeat to Galway, going down by two points, but were miles off it here. Advertisement Most read in GAA Football Yet McStay is sure they can lift it for the showdown with the Red Hands, adding: 'I believe we can. That's not us out there. In parts, but in very small parts. We were hoping to bring what was good in the Connacht final and add to it. 'We're a very, very competitive team. Tyrone away is difficult. It will ask really big question of us. But it will tell us a lot about our desire and our own character and I'm confident we will produce a fair performance up in Omagh.' Inside Lee Chin's life including day job as Wexford forward even stars during RTE GAA ad breaks with Johnny B Group 2 of the All-Ireland SFC — featuring Dublin, Galway, Armagh and Derry — had been dubbed the group of death but Group 1 is making its own case after this result left Mayo's Championship dreams on life support. Three points was the final margin but 1-2 from Mayo in stoppage time, including an O'Shea goal with the very last play, masked the extent of Cavan's dominance. Advertisement O'Donoghue missed the target with an early goal attempt but from then on, Carolan was the boss of their exchanges. The entire Cavan half-back line also kept their men scoreless, along with getting a point apiece at the other end. Galligan gushed: 'If we were playing in Division 1, or in the All-Ireland series year on year, these boys would get the same exposure . . . Niall Carolan, Cian Reilly, Cormac O'Reilly, they're All-Star-nomination type players. 'We knew that we were no bad team, we were a kick of a ball from Division 1. Advertisement 'There was enough evidence over the last three months that we could really compete so we put a massive emphasis on our athleticism and fitness over the last five weeks because we knew we had to match Mayo. 'The one thing that stood out in the Connacht final was that they had huge athleticism so we had to match that, and then we had to bring another layer of aggression, physicality and willingness to work.' CAVAN A BALL Cavan did that, and more. Mayo had the first-half breeze but the Breffni made it to the half-hour mark level at 0-4 apiece. A black card for Davitt Neary could have been the prompt to kick on, but instead Mayo rallied, kicking three points to lead at the turnaround. Advertisement Within a minute of the restart, that lead was gone. A tap-and-go free from Ciarán Brady opened up the defence and Gerard Smith's near-post finish was precise. The next four points were shared but Cavan never trailed again. The kickout battle was not dominated by one side or another but instead lead to a lot of rucks. And Cavan ate up the breaking ball. Madden, Faulkner and Oisín Kiernan were all on target while Mayo were leaning heavily on Stephen Coen for scores, four points coming from his right boot. Advertisement In the space of 60 seconds midway through the half, O'Reilly split the posts and Kiernan followed up with a splendid two-pointer, and Cavan kicked for home. Mayo looked lethargic and uninspired, with one score after another raining over Colm Reape's crossbar. Former keeper Galligan beamed: 'It was just a great all-round performance and I'm really proud of them, they're waiting so long to take a step by beating a good, top Division 1 team. We always knew that we had great players and I think the lads felt today was going to be the day.' CAVAN will host Donegal on the weekend after next, while MAYO visit Tyrone. He said: 'We were very disappointed with our performance the last day. There's no getting away from it. 'But, while we hold ourselves accountable and to higher standards, I think at some point in time that was going to happen. 'We were expecting a big response, because we know it's not us, there's much more in us. 'That's probably what stung the most when we reflected back and did our own analysis. Galway goals from Matthew Thompson and Rob Finnerty set up a grandstand finish. GAA legend TJ Reid's wife Niamh and daughter wear shorts in support of camogie stars Matthew Tierney had just equalised for the hosts when Lahiff won Stephen Cluxton's kick-out, before Cormac Costello worked it back to him to kick the winner. Farrell hailed the St Jude's man as Dublin made a huge statement in the race for Sam Maguire. Advertisement He said: 'That was a huge kick-out. Big, big press coming from Galway. They're big men out around that middle third, and it's very difficult to find the pockets. 'In fairness to Tom, great composure, steadied himself and slotted it over.'
