Park linked to first environment protest turns 100

A park believed to have sparked the first written environmental protest in England is celebrating 100 years since it was donated to the community. Crow Park in Keswick was given to the National Trust by owners Sir John and Lady Randles "to look after on behalf of the nation" in 1925. A plaque designating the Lake District as a UNESCO World Heritage Site was placed there in 2018. The park had been covered in oak woodland until the mid 1700s, when the then owners felled the trees to raise income for the Greenwich Hospital for injured soldiers, sparking objections from locals. They included a mention from poet Thomas Gray in 1769 in his Journal of A Visit to the Lake District. He said: "I walked to Crow Park, now a rough pasture, once a glade of ancient oaks, whose large roots still remain on the ground, but nothing has sprung from them. "If one single tree had remained this would have been an unparalleled spot." The National Trust believed this to be the first written record of an environmental protest and a key moment in the development of the Picturesque movement. The movement saw poets such as William Wordsworth and John Ruskin take part in the debate around public access to open spaces, which inspired Cumbrian vicar Hardwicke Rawnsley to co-found of the National Trust. To mark the 100-year milestone of Crow Park being donated to the charity, they are holding a two-day event, with acrobatic performances on 16.4ft (5m) swings and a chance for people to try them. Jessie Binns, Senior Programming and Partnerships Officer at the National Trust said: "With its historical significance and easy access to an iconic Lake District view, we are proud to continue to care for this special place while improving access so that everyone can enjoy nature, beauty and history here for generations." Sublime Galleria Bengaluru hosts acrylic artist Badrunissa Irfan's latest art collection Whimsical Worlds

Whimsical Worlds, Badrunnisa Irfan's latest series of paintings, is currently on display in the city. The collection of about 31 acrylic works of art include depictions of enchanted woods, wildlife, and landscapes. Speaking about her journey as a self-taught artist, Badrunnisa says, 'I used to only draw roses at one time, then I realised I could reproduce images and began practising with online images.' Now, her works are not just of flowers, but are detailed and colourful images of flora and fauna, and her favourite animal — the horse. She usually sits in her garden and spends hours on her works which are inspired by nature. Badrunnisa favours old brushstrokes and vibrant colours and one can see blue-orange fish, bright green landscapes, dark red mushrooms, light brown squirrels on trees, yellow birds, white houses by the sea and more, on her canvases. She says, 'I prefer to put colours into my paintings. I want people to see these paintings and feel happy because that is what life is all about. So many people have lost the colour in their lives.' Badrunnisa does not consider herself an artist, saying, 'I started painting only because my daughter came up to me one day and told me to stop cooking and enjoy some form of art. All my works are amateurish, but I am following my passion and the child in me comes out on canvas.' This collection includes portraits as well and are on display at the gallery for display and sale. Some of the most colourful ones include The Enchanted Path, Blooming Meadowside, Picturesque, Curious and Mischievous, Perched High in the Tree and Graceful, Fluttering Wings. 'All proceeds from this exhibition go to charity,' she adds. Some of her previous art exhibitions were titled Freedom of the Soul, Thousand Shades of Passion, Daring to Dream and Ethereal Expressions. Apart from painting collections, Badrunnisa has authored a cookbook titled, Duniya-e-Ziyafat. Whimsical Worlds by Badrunnisa Irfan will be on display at Sublime Galleria, UB City, till June 2. Entry fee ₹50, from 11am-8pm. For more details, call 8971904106
