Devils acquire veteran Brian Dumoulin in trade with Ducks: Sources
By Pierre LeBrun, Peter Baugh and Sarah Jean Maher The New Jersey Devils acquired defenseman Brian Dumoulin from the Anaheim Ducks for a second-round pick and 2024 third-round pick Herman Träff, league sources told The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun Thursday. The deal comes after defenseman Dougie Hamilton left Tuesday's game with an injury. Advertisement Dumoulin was No. 17 on The Athletic's latest trade board. A second-round pick of the Carolina Hurricanes in 2009, Dumoulin played 10 seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins and won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017. He signed a two-year contract as a free agent with the Seattle Kraken ahead of the 2023-24 season and was traded to the Ducks last summer. He has two goals and 16 points in 61 games this year while averaging 19:48 a night. The 33-year-old defender is a pending UFA. New Jersey had three second-round picks to work with in this year's draft, but they also had to part with Träff, whom The Athletic's Scott Wheeler recently ranked as their No. 6 prospect. The Ducks are retaining 50 percent of Dumoulin's $3.15 million cap hit. With Jack Hughes out for the season and on long-term injured reserve, the Devils still have plenty of cap space to try and bolster their roster. Their efforts will likely now turn toward the forward group. They were looking for centers even before Hughes went down. Hamilton isn't the Devils' only defensive injury. Jonas Siegenthaler is on long-term injured reserve with a lower-body injury. Dumoulin will help patch up the defensive corps, though general manager Tom Fitzgerald had to pay a decent price to acquire him.
