Filipino music icon Pilita Corrales dies at 85; people mourn 'Asia's queen of songs'

Pilita Corrales, also known as Asia's Queen of Songs, passed away at age 85 on Saturday, April 12, her granddaughter actress Janine Gutierrez confirmed on Instagram. "It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved mami and mamita, Pilita Corrales," Janine wrote on Instagram. She, however, did not disclose the cause of Pilita's death. "Pilita touched the lives of many, not only with her songs but also with her kindness and generosity. She will be remembered for her contributions to the entertainment industry, but most of all for her love of life and family," she added. Gutierrez added that more details about the memorial services will be shared to the public as she asked prayers for her late grandmother. "Please join us with your prayers and kind thoughts as we celebrate her beautiful life. Further details regarding memorial services will be shared soon," she concluded. Pilita Corrales is survived by her daughter Jackie Lou Blanco and son Ramon 'Monching' Christopher Gutierrez. Who was Pilita Corrales? Pilita Garrido Corrales was born on August 22, 1939 to Jose Corrales and Maria Garrido in Lahug, Cebu City. She is best-known for her distinctive backbend when singing and is popularly referred to as the 'Asia's Queen of Songs' for her vocal style and longevity. Corrales' career began in Australia during the 1950s, where she rose to fame with her rendition of 'Come Closer to Me.' Over six decades, Corrales recorded 135 albums in English, Filipino, Spanish, and Cebuano. Her signature song, 'Kapantay ay Langit' became a classic in Philippine music history. She was also the first Filipino artist to perform at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, invited by the legendary Sammy Davis Jr. She also won the Best Performer Award at the inaugural Tokyo Music Festival, surpassing international stars, including Olivia Newton-John.
