Tyler Andrews Approaches Everest Summit and a World Record

Tyler Andrews of the U.S. is well above 8,000m and is approaching the summit ridge of Everest, 15 hours after departing from Base Camp without supplementary oxygen. Yesterday at 9:08 pm, Nepal time, Andrews left Base Camp. According to his tracker, he has climbed through the night at a steady pace. Regular running partner Chris Fisher supported him through the Khumbu Icefall and kept him company until Camp 2, where they arrived after 3 hours and 30 minutes. Andrews reached Camp 4 about two hours before posting this story. However, his tracker was not updating his position punctually (tracking devices often have difficulties contacting the satellites between Camp 3 and the summit ridge). By now, he should be above the highest point he reached on his previous attempt last Friday, when he climbed with the help of supplementary oxygen and was eventually forced back by high winds. At the time of writing, Andrews was at 8,200m. You can read about the route and the most important features on the upper sections of Everest here. Some groups of climbers left Camp 4 yesterday and started to reach the summit in the early hours of this morning, reportedly in good weather. Among them is Kami Rita Sherpa, who has broken his record by summiting for the 31st time. He summited at 4:00 am, local time, at the head of an Indian team. Oleg Ivanchenko of Ukraine led a team of three clients and six Sherpa guides; they were the last members outfitted by Seven Summit Treks, the biggest Nepal-based outfitter, which had over 100 foreign clients this season. Pioneer Adventures and SummitClimb also reported summits today. Andrews may have crossed paths with some summit climbers as they descend back to Camp 4, or perhaps even lower. Everyone should aim to abandon the mountain as soon as possible, as the state of the Khumbu Icefall is rapidly degrading.

4 days after Everester goes missing, Kol top cop's security guard summits peak

Kolkata: West Bengal Police constable Lakshmikanta Mandal on Monday reached the summit of Mount Everest, along with Chhonzin Angmo, a visually impaired climber from Nepal. Mandal, who is Kolkata Police commissioner Manoj Verma's personal security guard, is the fourth climber from Bengal to reach the summit of Mount Everest in the past four days. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The last three summits were made on May 15, when one of them, a climber from Ranaghat, went missing. "The team with Mandal and Angmo left Camp IV on Sunday night and reached the summit around 8.30 am on Monday. The skies were clear but there were biting winds," said an official of Pioneer Adventures over the phone. According to sources, the team descended to Camp IV by the afternoon and rested there. Both climbers are in good health and are likely to start descending to Camp II on Tuesday. "He climbed with Tenzing Sherpa. Their story is more than a climb. It is a powerful reminder that no barrier is too big when the human spirit leads the way," Pioneer Adventures posted on its Facebook page after announcing the successful summits. According to sources, Mandal plans to climb Mount Lhotse next. Mandal is a constable with the 3rd battalion of the State Armed Police. He started rigorous training over the past few years after he climbed Pinnacle Peak in Ladakh (6,930 metres). "He completed basic and advanced courses in search-and-rescue and started climbing mountains higher than 6,000 m. He went to Ladakh to climb Pinnacle Peak with us. He is a skilful climber," said Everest summiteer Ramesh Roy. Commissioner Verma said that Mandal has set an example for the force. "This requires immense mental strength, along with physical capability. He climbed several peaks before. Last year, he conquered a peak in Ladakh. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now We were aware of his training for the Everest goal. He was supported in every possible way, including financially. Although this is his personal achievement, it is a matter of pride for our police force. " "This is the fourth Everest summit from Bengal in the past four days. The last three summits were on the same day, May 15. A lot of climbers from the state are attempting Mount Everest now. We are expecting a few more major climbs from Bengal mountaineers on other peaks this year," said Satyarup Siddhanta, Everest summiteer and Guinness record holder.

Everest: First Deaths; Main Summit Wave This Weekend

Philipp Santiago II of the Philippines died at Camp 4 last night as he was preparing to leave for the summit. He is the first person to die on Everest this year. Outfitter Snowy Horizon Treks told The Himalayan Times that the cause of death is unknown. Apparently, Santiago reached Camp 4 very late, after nightfall. The rest of the team proceeded to the summit shortly afterward. The Himalayan Times has also reported the deaths of two Sherpa staff who had been airlifted to the hospital after they came down with Acute Mountain Sickness in Everest Base Camp. Their names were not released. A weather window will open on May 18-19, and almost all teams would pick these days to summit. But if everyone goes at the same time, there will be crowding on the final sections. For that reason, some teams have opted to battle the wind and go for the summit before the good-weather wave begins. The Climbing the Seven Summits team reached the top today on both Everest and Lhotse. Some of their Everest summiters will climb Lhotse tomorrow and then return to Base Camp with the double-header under their belts. Pioneer Adventures also reported five summits -- two foreigners and three Sherpa guides -- at 5:00 am. Meanwhile, Base Camp is emptying fast, Jon Gupta told ExplorersWeb. Gupta is guiding Tim Howell on his wingsuit flight attempt from a point at 8,300m on the Lhotse Ridge. Gupta said the team is leaving Base Camp tonight. The UK "Xenon" team, hoping to climb Everest in a week, should arrive in Base Camp on Saturday, member Garth Miller told ExplorersWeb. Only a few teams will remain in Base Camp, including Madison Mountaineering, which plans to summit around May 22, and Adventure Consultants, whose members returned from their final acclimatization round to Camp 3 yesterday. They will rest for a few days before their final push.
