Two rescued by U.S. Coast Guard after a plane goes into the water off CT coast

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued two occupants from a plane that crashed into the Long Island Sound southeast of the Thimble Islands near Branford. The 'two people were in stable condition and were taken to Stony Creek Pier for EMS support,' according to a post by the U.S. Coast Guard on X. In addition to the U.S. Coast Guard, the New Haven and Branford fire departments responded as well. The crash happened six miles from Tweed Airport. The airport said on a Facebook post that the plane was a Piper Cherokee and confirmed that were two people on board. 'A small aircraft has been reported in the water off the coast of the Town of Branford. The flight's origin and destination are currently unknown,' the post reads. 'The Coast Guard has been notified. The control tower has contacted local authorities. Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting has been activated and is on standby.' Andrew King, a Tweed spokesperson, said the Branford Fire Department launched its water rescue craft. He confirmed that this was not a flight that had departed or was destined for Tweed. 'On its initial course it did not look like (the plane) had any purpose or intent to go to Tweed,' King said. He said he doesn't expect any effects to activity at the airport today. According to AirNav, a data service company that tracks global flights, the plane took off from Bridgeport this morning. The Federal Aviation Administration is also investigating the crash. 'A Piper PA-32 crashed into Long Island Sound south of Tweed New Haven Airport in Connecticut around 10:30 a.m. local time on Sunday, June 1. Two people were on board. The FAA will investigate,' according to an email from the FAA. According to the FAA, the fixed wing single-engine plane was registered by a resident of Newtown. A spokesperson from the National Transportation Safety Board said the organization is still gathering information. 'The NTSB is aware and collecting information about the incident, but we are currently waiting on recovery efforts to make a determination on an investigation,' the NTSB spokesperson said.

Small plane crash-lands on Miramar elementary school property

A small plane crash-landed on the property of a Miramar elementary school Wednesday afternoon, officials say. No one was injured. About 1 p.m., a single-engine Piper Cherokee took off from North Perry Airport, according to FlightAware. A few minutes later, it landed in a field west of Coconut Palm Elementary on Monarch Lakes Boulevard, according to Miramar Fire Rescue. The plane was damaged, but the two people on board extricated themselves and said they had no injuries. No structures were involved or damaged. ' … while on school property it is set back and did not impact the school from continuing normal operations at this time,' said Miramar Fire Rescue spokesperson Tara Smith. The school itself was not placed on lockdown, said Janice McIntosh, a spokesperson for Miramar Police. Miramar Police and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating. Officials did not say where the plane was heading when it crashed. Most of its previous flights took off from North Perry, many of them returning to North Perry a short while later, according to FlightAware. The plane is owned by a company called N3055B LLC, based in Delaware, according to FAA records. Miramar has been the site of several small plane crashes over the years, due to its proximity to North Perry Airport, one of Florida's busiest general aviation airports.
