Bihar government renames Gaya as 'Gaya Ji'
ANI 17 May 2025, 09:33 GMT+10 Patna (Bihar) [India], May 17 (ANI): Gaya town in Bihar will now be known as 'Gaya Ji'. The decision was taken into a state cabinet meeting under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Briefing the reporters after the meeting the State's additional chief secretary S Siddharth said that the decision was taken in view of local sentiments and the townS historical and religious significance. Taking to X, Janata Dal United (JDU) National Working President Sanjay Kumar Jha thanked CM Nitish Kumar for renaming the town 'I am thankful to the honourable Chief Minister from the bottom of my heart for this important decision of changing the name and hearty congratulations and best wishes to all the residents of 'Gayaji',' he said. BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad also welcomed the decision and said that this decision highlights the religious significance of Gaya 'The decision of the state cabinet to rename Gaya as 'Gayaji' is a matter of welcome and pride. This decision not only further highlights the religious significance of Gaya but also reflects the NDA government's dedication towards Sanatan culture and commitment to the preservation of religious places,' Prasad wrote on X. Gaya town is known for its religious significance. Lakhs of tourists from across the globe visit Gaya every year during 'Pitrapaksh' to offer 'Pind Daan' to the souls of ancestors. Gaya was the part of the ancient Magadh Empire. The city is located on the bank of Falgu River. hree hills Mangala-Gauri, Shringa-Sthan, Ram-Shila and Brahmayoni surround it from three sides. The most attractive destination in Gaya is Vishnupad Temple. The temple is located on the bank of river Falgu River and has footprint of Vishnu incised into a block of basalt. People believe that Lord Vishnu killed Gayasur by placing his foot on Gayasur's chest. Bodhgaya is also situated in Gaya which is one of the most important and sacred Buddhist pilgrimage centre in the world. It was here under a banyan tree, the Bodhi Tree, Gautama attained supreme knowledge to become Buddha. (ANI)

Bihar's Gaya will now be known as ‘Gaya Ji'
PATNA: Gaya town in will now be officially known as ' Gaya Ji '. The state govt approved a decision to rename the town in a cabinet meeting chaired by CM on Friday. Briefing reporters after the cabinet meeting, the State's additional chief secretary S Siddharth said the decision was taken in view of local sentiments and the town's historic and religious importance. Scores of Hindu pilgrims from across the globe visit Gaya every year, especially during 'Pitrapaksh' (Sept-Oct), to offer 'pind daan' to their ancestors.

Bihar govt renames Gaya town as Gaya Ji
Gaya town, one of the most famous religiously significant and touristically famous cities of Bihar, will now be officially known as Gaya Ji. The state cabinet, headed by chief minister Nitish Kumar, on Friday approved the general administrative department's (GAD) proposal to rename Gaya as Gaya Ji. Lakhs of tourists from across the globe visit Gaya every year during Pitrapaksh (usually in September) to offer prayers (pind daan) to the souls of departed ancestors since time immemorial. Legends have it that the town was named after a demon called Gayasur lived in the region in Treta Yuga. According to Vayu Purana, the demon performed strict penance and got blessed by Lord Vishu and thus became a pious soul. Additional chief secretary (cabinet) S. Siddharth said that renaming of Gaya town is among 69 proposals that were discussed and approved by the cabinet. Cooperative department minister and Gaya MLA Prem Kumar thanked the chief minister for allowing the proposal for officially remaining the town, saying that he had been trying for it for the past one decade in pursuance of the local sentiments. In 2022, the Gaya municipal corporation had also passed a resolution to name Gaya as Gaya Ji. In another important decision, the cabinet gave its nod for hike in dearness allowances (DA) to its staff and pensioners in accordance with the Central government's decision. DA of all staff and pensioners, getting salary and pension in accordance with the provisions of fifth to seventh pay commission has been raised with effect from January 1,2025. 'DA of those getting salary and pension as per the seventh pay commission has been raised to 55% from the existing 53%. The state government will have to bear additional annual expenditure of more than ₹1,000 crore. DA of sixth and fifth pay commission has been increased to 252% from 246% and to 466% from 455% respectively.
