Thieves are targeting these luxury truck models in Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Bakersfield is near the top of the list when it comes to car thefts in the country, and now police are sounding the alarm that luxury pickup trucks are getting ripped off. An undercover BPD officer says thieves are using auto diagnostic tools to start the trucks and disconnect OnStar systems so the trucks can't be tracked. They're even punching through the glass to open the door to bypass the push button start. Four people arrested on suspicion of stealing multiple Arvin Public Works trucks: Arvin PD 'The police department said that they're an organized ring and they're coming to Kern County to steal trucks to fill their orders,' Chief Operating Officer John Pitre with the Motor City Auto Center said. Over the last two months, there's been a surge of high-end truck thefts targeting 2018 and 2023 GMC Sierra half-ton and three-quarter ton pickups with the AT4 or Denali trims. 'Exotic suspension systems, wheels and tires, big brakes, high-power engines, leather interiors. I don't really think they're going after these trucks for a particular feature. I think they're looking for the entire truck,' Pitre said. Pitre said if you own one of the trucks, Motor City customer or not, to send an email to help@ or call 661-559-9595 to protect your pickup. 'We have a way to catalog those vehicles in such a way that if they are stolen, we can recover them,' he said. Bakersfield ranks 2nd in metro areas with highest car thefts in 2022 study Police say truck thefts are happening mostly along the Panama Lane and Buena Vista Road corridors. Brock Butler's GMC Heavy Duty 2500 truck got broken into. 'They ripped my deck out and messed with the whole brain of my truck. They popped my key cylinder and got right in the door,' he said. Brock Butler builds pools. It took three men five hours to dig a hole while their heavy duty pickups are out in the open. But, Butler has a hack. 'If you put an aftermarket handle that doesn't have a key cylinder on it, that's worked for me,' he said. California led the country in total vehicle thefts per capita last year. Bakersfield was ranked the third on the list for stolen vehicles in 2024, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now 'Not shocking at all. My co-worker's truck was stolen like, I think it was six times in three months,' said Butler. San Francisco was first and Memphis second on the list. Lock your vehicle and park it in the garage, behind a secure fence or box it in. Add a GPS tracker so authorities can find your vehicle faster if it gets stolen. Police say the easiest way to protect your vehicle is to disconnect your battery. That way thieves can't even start your pickup. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Louisiana DA seeks death penalty for Breaux in mid-2026 trial

ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. (KLFY) — St. Landry Parish District Attorney seeks death penalty after Davieontray Breaux was indicted again for first degree murder and other charges earlier today. Davieontray Breaux indicted again for two counts of first degree murder and also charged with three counts of attempted first degree murder, Chad Pitre, St. Landry District Attorney, said. In June 2022, a St. Landry Grand Jury indicted Breaux along with Felton Martin James and Holly Roberts with two counts of first-degree murder for the shooting of a four year old girl and Alton Thomas of Opelousas. In additional, these three individuals are charged with three counts of attempted first degree murder of three other juveniles involved in the shooting, Pitre said. Earlier in May, attorneys appealed to the Louisiana supreme court and argued that it would be improper for Mr. Breaux to have to defend against the death penalty charges and the attempted first-degree murders in the same trial. On May 9, the Louisiana Supreme Court agreed with the capital defense attorneys and revoked the state's indictment against due to the Louisiana Constitution does not allow a district attorney to join capital offenses with noncapital offenses in a single indictment and be trialed together, Pitre said. Sade Robinson homicide; lasting legacy, from tragedy to advocacy

The Brief Prosecutors say 19-year-old Sade Robinson was found killed and mutilated after a first date in April 2024. The Sojourner Family Peace Center reports there have been nine domestic violence homicides in Milwaukee this year. Sade's Voice Foundation will donate to causes that align with their mission and offer scholarships for self-defense courses for young women. MILWAUKEE - Hope, anxiety, excitement and maybe some curiosity or fear of the unknown – all emotions of the dating culture. But there could also be concern about safety. Local perspective It's what Sade Robinson's loved ones live with daily. Prosecutors say the 19-year-old was found killed and mutilated after a first date in April 2024. Carmen Pitre is president and CEO of the Sojourner Family Peace Center in Milwaukee. The nonprofit provides domestic violence prevention and intervention services. "We should live in communities where you can go on a date without concern that this will happen to you or someone you love," said Pitre. "It was horrendous to have had what happened to her, where she was dismembered, and awful for the family and have to day-by-day wonder: where is she?" With Sade, she was hurt in the intimacy of a relationship or, while it may not have met the statutory definition for us, what matters is she was in a relationship soon to be or had been in communication in an intimate way with this person. By the numbers The Sojourner Family Peace Center reports there have been nine domestic violence homicides in Milwaukee this year. In 2024, there were at least 34 domestic violence homicides; Robinson was among the list of victims. Data shows 39 cases in 2023, 49 in 2022, 41 in 2021 and 51 in 2020. The numbers include violent crimes between several relationship types, like parent/child, spouses and romantic partners. "We have a high level, or lethal, violence in Milwaukee," Pitre added. "It's gone down in recent years, but we still have far too much levels of violence that means people being strangled, people being set on fire, houses being sat on fire, guns, knives being used in intimate relationships so we're concerned about that." What's next Sentiments shared by Robinson's mother, Sheena Scarbrough, prompted her to start the Sade's Voice Foundation. "For all of the other missing and murdered Black, indigenous people of color," said Scarbrough. Scarbrough said the nonprofit will donate to organizations and causes that align with their mission as well as host annual back-to-school drives and offer scholarships for self-defense courses for young women. "It is her voice, her legacy to honor and carry what she was about," Scarbrough said. "She was a light worker, and she has saved so many young women and individuals. My baby is a hero." So far, the foundation has raised over $39,000 with the help of community partners. A portion of those funds will go towards a permanent memorial at Warnimont Park, where one of Sade's body parts was first discovered. "It's going to be bright pink and there going to understand once this place was a beautiful place to be. This is going to be the home of a memorial for somebody that was so beautiful," said cousin Keke. A reminder to live and love freely while remaining vigilant. Memphis woman critically injured after falling from Bahamas boat

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis woman who was celebrating her college graduation was critically injured after she fell from an excursion boat during a trip to the Bahamas. On May 3, Hannah Smith, 22, an Overton High School graduate from Memphis walked across the Miles College graduation stage as Summa Cum Laude for her Communications degree. 'We all met at the graduation, all you know, cheered and screamed her name as she walked across the stage,' said her father, Marvin Smith. 'And then she also had a Delta performance right after the graduation, which was amazing, and she did incredible with that.' After her graduation, Hannah and her childhood friend, Brooklyn Pitre, went on a celebration cruise to the Bahamas. 'I heard the splash, and I instantly looked. And when she first went into the water, she just made the face like somebody fell, like I'm in the water,' said Pitre. 'But she didn't look distraught, and then she disappeared for about three seconds. And I didn't see her.' Pitre said that she did not know what happened, and that Hannah came back up from the water and reached out her hand. Woman hit in head with bottle outside Peabody Hotel 'And she was like, get me. And me and another woman, we had met on the cruise ship that was on the excursion with us. We pulled her out, and then there was like a lot of blood in the water,' said Pitre. Hannah had fallen off the excursion boat and came into contact with the boat's propeller, which injured her lower extremities. 'She hit something when she went down or got sucked into into something. And there was a lot of damage. The doctors at Doctors Hospital in the Bahamas, they saved their life,' said her mother, Tracy Smith. Child rape suspect captured years after warrant issued 'They prepared us in saying she was critical, and they couldn't guarantee she was gonna make it because she lost so much blood,' Tracy said. Hannah had two surgeries in the Bahamas and was brought back to the States on Wednesday, but she has more surgeries ahead this week. Her family is now by her side, and a growing list of supporters from her school, sorority, and friends, offering prayers and blood donations to help Hannah through what her parents say will be a long journey.
