Pitt County Department of Social Services to hold annual walk for elder abuse awareness

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is coming up. On June 15, 2006, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was launched in a bid to bring communities awareness of how their elders can be abused or neglected and why it matters. The National center on Elder Abuse says that for every one reported case of abuse, neglect, exploitation or harm about five more cases go unreported. The Pitt County Department of Social Services is using the day to invite Pitt County businesses to wear purple on Sunday, June 15, and share photos online in support. Staff with the department will hold their annual awareness walk in front of the County Office Complex in Greenville on Friday, June 13, at 8:30am. 'We invite our healthcare partners and the community to wear purple on June 15 to support awareness of elder abuse. Everyone is encouraged to share their 'Wear Purple' photos by email to PittInfo@ to be published online in a collage showing Countywide support for World Elder Abuse Awareness,' said Sharon Rochelle, Director, Pitt County Department of Social Services. If you suspect abuse of any type, call the department at 252-902-1110 and tell the operator you wish to make an 'Adult Protective Services Report'. If there is immediate danger, call 911.
