Cigna, Allegheny Health Network contract dispute threatens in-network access for thousands
Thousands of Cigna commercially insured people in the Pittsburgh region could lose in-network access to Allegheny Health Network by the end of June in a dispute over a new contract. AHN patients who use Cigna were notified this week of the impasse in negotiations on a new contract, meaning most care would be out of network if there isn't a new contract in place by June 30, according to a copy of a letter obtained by the Pittsburgh Business Times. About 20,000 Cigna members have used an AHN provider within the past year. It's the second such dispute in the past two years. The contract that runs out is for commercially insured members and not for Medicare or Medicare Advantage members. Cigna in March 2025 sold the Medicare-related business to Health Care Service Corp., a Chicago-based insurer. HCSC's coverage of Medicare and Medicare Advantage patients isn't impacted by this dispute and those patients will continue to have in-network access to AHN no matter what happens to the commercial insurance agreement. Nakama Japanese Steakhouse closes doors after 20 years on South Side
South Side restaurant Nakama Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi has quietly closed its doors. The hibachi-teppanyaki restaurant has ceased offering its dining services, stopped taking reservations online for further meals, and its phone is no longer operational. Representatives for Nakama did not respond to multiple attempts to contact the business to give a reason for the quiet closing. A longstanding South Side sensation, Nakama blended entertainment and eating, receiving widespread acclaim from local news outlets and food critics. The restaurant offered a sushi bar, standard bar and hibachi tables where chefs would cook directly in front of guests. Nakama first opened in 2003, one of the earliest tableside Japanese steakhouses to open in the area before the trend would expand rapidly over the next decade. The restaurant also operated a location in Wexford, which closed last summer, as well as a food truck. It's unclear if the food truck is still in operation. A look at 106 general contractors building in Pittsburgh
The largest contractors in Pittsburgh employ more than 13,000 locally and had construction-related local billings of $10.1 billion in 2024. Firms have local offices in Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Lawrence, Washington and Westmoreland counties. The online version of this ranking expands beyond what appears in print; another 60-plus firms are included in our digital rankings, in addition to the 40 featured in this week's print edition. This week's List is part of a shift in our research methodology and philosophy in 2025, one that will emphasize more data and context for readers while better coordinating the resources available to us and our 46 sister publications under the American City Business Journals flag. We anticipate this effort will identify thousands of new local records — and cumulatively, tens of thousands of new businesses across ACBJ's footprint — this year alone. Information on The List was obtained through Pittsburgh Business Times research or supplied by individual firms through questionnaires that PBT could not independently verify. In case of ties, firms are ranked by total employment and then listed alphabetically if ties remain. Additionally, companies that did not respond to employment surveys but were still included on this year's List are sorted by estimated total employment figures derived from PBT archives; annual filings with the U.S. Department of Labor; and other firm-specific resources. Inclusion on this year's List required each firm to have a minimum of 60 total employees, using the methodologies described above. 2 Main Line public school districts named top 5 in Pennsylvania, but Allegheny County dominates list
Southwestern Pennsylvania schools dominated a statewide ranking of public school districts published this month, but a few in the Philadelphia area made the top 10. The Pittsburgh Business Times recently published its 2025 School Guide, which ranks districts based on the three most recent years of scores on the PSSA and Keystone Exams standardized tests. And in the past year, the Top 5 have maintained their standards of excellence — and retained their spots on the list for the second year in a row. Fox Chapel Area School District in Allegheny County topped the list once again, per PBT. Placing second was the Upper St. Clair School District, while Kobe Bryant's alma mater, Lower Merion, came in third. Radnor Township School District in Delaware County and Peters Township School District in Washington County rounded out the leaders. Allegheny County had more districts in the top 10 than any other county. You can see the full list and where districts in your area rank on
