(AP Photo/Matt Freed) PITTSBURGH (AP) — Bryan Reynolds hit a bases-loaded triple to cap a four-run third inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the skidding Miami Marlins 10-3 on Monday night for their season-high fourth straight win. Reynolds put the Pirates ahead 4-1 with a line drive to the gap in right-center field off Eury Perez (0-1), who was making his first major league start since Sept. 20, 2023, after recovering from Tommy John surgery. Reynolds' hit came after Andrew McCutchen had an RBI infield single. Advertisement All nine Pirates had hits, and McCutchen and Adam Frazier paced a 15-hit attack with three apiece. Brett Sullivan had two RBIs in his Pirates debut after being called up Saturday from Triple-A Indianapolis. Perez lasted just three innings and gave up four runs and four hits. He had five strikeouts and two walks while throwing 70 pitches as the Marlins lost for the eighth time in their last nine games. Despite missing so much time, Perez is still the youngest pitcher in the major leagues at 22 years, 55 days. The Pirates broke the game open with a four-run sixth that included two throwing errors by the Marlins on Ke'Bryan Hayes' bunt single. That put Pittsburgh ahead 8-2. Advertisement The Marlins' Otto Lopez hit a leadoff home run in the second inning, his sixth, to open the scoring. Miami lost for the eighth time in nine games. Pirates rookie starter Mike Burrows allowed two runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings with six strikeouts and three walks. Caleb Ferguson (2-0) pitched two perfect innings. The start of the game was delayed 41 minutes because of the threat of inclement weather. Key moment Reynolds' triple gave the Pirates all the runs they would need. McCutchen ties Clemente for third on Pirates' all-time homers list with 240

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Andrew McCutchen tied Roberto Clemente for third place on the Pittsburgh Pirates' all-time home run list at 240 with a two-run shot off San Diego's Randy Vásquez in the third inning on Sunday. It was the second homer in two games and fifth of the season for the 38-year-old McCutchen, who's in his 17th big league season and 12th with Pittsburgh over two stints. It gave the Pirates a 2-1 lead. Clemente hit 240 homers from 1955-1972. He was 38 when he was killed on Dec. 31, 1972, in the crash of a plane he chartered to deliver emergency supplies for the survivors of an earthquake in Nicaragua. He was posthumously elected to the Hall of Fame in 1973. Willie Stargell tops the Pirates' list with 475 homers and Ralph Kiner is next with 301. McCutchen has 324 homers in a career in which he's also played for Philadelphia, Milwaukee, San Francisco and the New York Yankees.

Pirates' Jared Jones to miss 2025 season after undergoing elbow surgery
PITTSBURGH — Jared Jones' second season in the big leagues is over before it even began. The Pittsburgh Pirates' right-handed pitcher underwent elbow surgery and will not return in 2025. The 23-year-old Jones initially complained of elbow pain in mid-March. Jones was in the process of rehabbing the injury when he felt discomfort in the elbow while doing long toss (100 feet). The decision to have surgery was made after Jones met with Dr. Keith Meister. The extent of the damage to the elbow wasn't initially known, said Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk. While Tomczyk declined to put a timetable on a possible return to play for Jones, he confirmed Jones will be out for at least the remainder of this season. Jones made the Pirates out of spring training in 2024 and pitched well, going 6-8 with a 4.14 ERA. Pittsburgh had hoped Jones would be featured near the top of the rotation, along with reigning National League Rookie of the Year Paul Skenes and veteran Mitch Keller. Tomczyk said surgery was one of the options presented to Jones at the time of the injury, but Jones, with the support of the club and other medical experts, opted for rehab to give him a 'fighting chance' to pitch in 2025. Jones was shut down for six weeks, then began throwing from 60 feet in late April without issue. It wasn't until the program was extended to 100 feet that Jones felt discomfort. If a full elbow reconstruction was required, Jones will likely be out at least 12 months, putting 2026 in jeopardy as well. First baseman Enmanuel Valdez will also miss the rest of the season after having surgery on his left shoulder.
