Did you spot these unannounced Pixel features in Google's big Android Show reveal?

Adamya Sharma / Android Authority TL;DR Google's Material 3 Expressive preview quietly reveals two upcoming Pixel features: AOD wallpapers and a redesigned lock screen with a compact notification shelf. Always On Display support for wallpapers was last seen on the Pixel 3, making this its first appearance since. The updated pixel lock screen layout includes shifted At a Glance widgets and an optional compact notification shelf. Google has shared many announcements today through The Android Show: I/O Edition, including big news in the form of Material 3 Expressive, which is bringing about design refreshes for Android and Wear OS. Curiously, as part of the announcement, Google has shown off two features that it doesn't talk about in the barrage of announcements today: Wallpaper on the Always On Display, and Pixel's new lock screen layout with the compact notification shelf. You will notice these two secrets hidden in plain sight if you check out the Live Updates GIF in Google's Material 3 Expressive announcement. This GIF (converted to video format above) starts with the lock screen wallpaper visible on the Always On Display. Google hasn't talked about this feature yet, nor has it been leaked for the Android 16 or beyond releases, so this is the feature's first sighting. However, the Always On Display wallpaper support isn't new to the Google Pixel lineup. It was first spotted in the Android 9 Pie source code in 2018 and subsequently debuted on the Pixel 3. For whatever reason, subsequent Pixels don't have this feature, while iPhones and even Samsung Galaxy phones have had this for a while. The GIF also shows off the new Pixel lock screen layout and the compact notification shelf that we have previously leaked. As you'll notice in the images above, the At a Glance widget's date and weather complications have moved to the right of the clock, which we predicted back then. At the time, we noted that these complications also move below the clock when centered, but the GIF doesn't show that yet. The compact notification shelf is expected to be an optional setting that collapses notifications on the lock screen for a cleaner lock screen look. Instead of showing the full notification preview, only the app's icon appears in a small, slightly transparent chip located below the At a Glance widget's contextual information complication, ensuring it doesn't obstruct the wallpaper. Tapping this chip expands the notification shade, revealing all pending notifications. Here's a better look at the updated lock screen layout, from our previous coverage on Android's big UI overhaul: Mishaal Rahman / Android Authority Old vs new lock screen notification shelf in Android These changes are not coming to Android 16's first release, but could come with future Android 16 QPR releases or even Android 17. We'll keep you updated when we learn more. Got a tip? Talk to us! Email our staff at Email our staff at news@ . You can stay anonymous or get credit for the info, it's your choice.

Unlock the World: Why Every Smart Traveler Needs an eSIM

Traveling today is no longer just about where you're going—it's about how connected you stay while you're there. From seamless Google Maps navigation to uploading high-quality Instagram stories on the go, having a reliable internet connection is essential for travelers. That's where eSIMs come in. Especially for destinations like the esim usa region, eSIM technology is quickly becoming the go-to solution for tourists, digital nomads, and business travelers who crave instant, borderless connectivity. Forget about lining up at airport kiosks or switching physical SIM cards every time you enter a new country. With an eSIM, your mobile plan is activated digitally, often through a QR code, directly onto your device. Whether you're hopping between cities or spending a week in one location, you can easily manage your plan, monitor usage, and top up as needed. An eSIM—short for embedded SIM—is a rewritable chip already built into your smartphone or tablet. Unlike traditional SIM cards, which are removable and must be physically inserted into your device, an eSIM is activated over the air through software. This embedded chip is revolutionizing how we travel for several reasons: No physical swapping: Eliminate the hassle of handling tiny SIM cards and ejector tools. Eliminate the hassle of handling tiny SIM cards and ejector tools. Instant connectivity: Activate a data plan anytime, anywhere—even while in-flight or before you land. Activate a data plan anytime, anywhere—even while in-flight or before you land. Multiple profiles: Store several plans on one device and switch as needed without losing your number. Store several plans on one device and switch as needed without losing your number. Eco-friendly: Reduces the waste generated from plastic SIM cards and packaging. Major smartphone brands like Apple, Google, and Samsung have embraced eSIM compatibility in recent years. If you own an iPhone XS or newer, a Pixel 3 or newer, or a Samsung Galaxy S20 and up, chances are you're already eSIM-ready. When traveling across multiple countries, staying connected often means juggling multiple SIM cards. eSIMs eliminate that pain point. With just a few taps on your screen, you can switch between local or global data plans offered by providers like Mobimatter, which offer excellent eSIM bundles across numerous regions. Take for example travelers heading to the UK. Instead of paying hefty roaming charges or hunting down a local telecom store, they can activate an esim uk plan directly on their phone before departure. Within minutes, they're online with a strong, local network connection—no paperwork or ID verification needed. And with eSIMs from Mobimatter, users gain access to a range of tailored options that suit different travel lengths, data requirements, and budget preferences. From short-term 7-day passes to long-term 30-day packages, there's something for everyone. Travelers no longer need to waste time searching for local SIM vendors or fumbling with tiny SIM trays. With eSIMs, setup is digital and instant. Most plans can be activated by simply scanning a QR code. Compared to traditional roaming charges, eSIM plans are often 60–80% cheaper. Providers like Mobimatter offer transparent pricing with no hidden fees, letting travelers stay within budget. Using your home carrier overseas can result in costly surprise bills. With eSIMs, you only pay for what you use, with full control over your data limits. For multi-stop itineraries, many eSIM plans offer regional coverage. For instance, an esim package allows you to travel freely across countries like France, Germany, Spain, and Italy without changing plans or incurring roaming charges. eSIM technology allows dual SIM functionality. Keep your primary number active for essential calls and texts while your eSIM handles all your international data. While traditional SIM cards still serve their purpose, eSIMs are undeniably more convenient for travelers: Feature Traditional SIM eSIM Physical card required Yes No Multi-country support Limited Widely available Activation speed 1-2 hours (or more) 2-5 minutes Loss/damage risk High None Remote provisioning No Yes eSIMs eliminate physical limitations, reduce plastic waste, and simplify travel. For the modern jetsetter, the choice is clear. Jane is a freelance graphic designer who works while traveling. She needs consistent data across cities in Europe and North America. She uses Mobimatter's eSIM Europe plan and adds an eSIM USA package when she flies stateside. With both activated, she maintains full connectivity and client communication without hassle. Raj is a senior consultant based in London. He frequently travels between the UK and the US for meetings. By installing an eSIM UK and USA combo, he cuts costs, avoids roaming fees, and ensures uninterrupted communication. A family of four visiting Europe needs navigation, restaurant recommendations, and entertainment for the kids. Instead of buying four separate SIM cards in each country, they buy one multi-country eSIM Europe plan for each device and enjoy smooth travel throughout the continent. Most modern devices from the last 3–5 years are eSIM-ready. Here's a quick list: Apple: iPhone XS/XR and later models iPhone XS/XR and later models Google: Pixel 3 and newer Pixel 3 and newer Samsung: Galaxy S20 and newer (select models) Galaxy S20 and newer (select models) Others: Motorola Razr, Surface Duo, Huawei P40 You can check your phone's settings to confirm. On iPhones, go to Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan . If you see an option to scan a QR code, your phone is eSIM-capable. Mobimatter is a leading platform that connects travelers with affordable, high-quality eSIM plans from top providers. Whether you're heading to the US, the UK, or exploring Europe, Mobimatter's interface allows you to: Compare regional offers Read user reviews Filter by price, duration, and data needs Instantly download and activate All without paperwork or confusing telecom contracts. The future of travel is digital, and connectivity should be just as mobile as you are. Whether you're traveling for work, leisure, or long-term relocation, an eSIM ensures you stay online from touchdown to takeoff. Say goodbye to roaming fees and unreliable Wi-Fi—your journey deserves better. So next time you're planning a trip across borders, don't forget to check out esim usa, esim uk, or e sim europe plans that suit your itinerary. It's time to travel smarter, not harder. Google Pixel Watch 3's Life-Saving Feature Explained

Google Pixel Watch 3 Google has provided a little more detail on how its potentially life-saving 'loss of pulse' detection feature works in the Pixel Watch 3. Earlier this month, Google announced loss of pulse detection for the Pixel 3, and has now published a blog post explaining in a little more detail how it works, and how it was developed. I'll give you the shortened version. Google says the Pixel Watch 3's loss of pulse feature relies on three core metrics. The first is, sensibly enough, that the optical heart rate sensor on the back of the watch appears to detect the loss of heart rate signal. Or, to use Google's own wording, the Pixel Watch notices 'a sudden large drop in the alternating current (AC) component of the green PPG.' It also employs a 'machine learning algorithm' that analyzes the sensor data from the PPG heart rate sensor and accelerometer. And it assesses input from an 'additional sensor' using LEDs with 'different geometries, wavelengths, LED currents, and photodiode gain settings.' The only explanation that really makes sense here is Google is referring to the sensor what would otherwise tell you your blood oxygenation. Google says it teamed-up with cardiac electrophysiologists and their patients for the development of the loss of pulse feature, and no doubt the 'machine leaning algorithm' its explanation refers to. The blog goes on to explain this was a key part of the feature's development, as recreating actual situations where someone's heart stops is both ethically and practically fraught. To get your head around the power of the Pixel Watch 3's loss of pulse feature, the blog also offers some useful context. It's about turning an 'unwitnessed' out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) into a witnessed one. But instead of a person nearby doing that witnessing, the wearable does. As detailed in the original story on the Pixel Watch 3's loss of pulse functionality, attempts are made to alert the wearer, using sound and haptic feedback, before a call is finally made to emergency services.

Loss of Pulse Detection Feature on the Pixel Watch 3 Is Coming to the US

Google has received FDA clearance for its latest safety feature for the Pixel Watch 3, Loss of Pulse Detection. This feature identifies when your pulse is lost and can automatically call emergency services if you're unresponsive. It's a first-of-its-kind feature not available on other smartwatches. Google announced the Loss of Pulse Detection feature in 2024 for select EU countries. It's since been available in 14 countries. Now that Google has received the green light from the FDA, it can be released in the US. This opt-in feature is expected to start rolling at the end of March. The watch uses an AI-based algorithm and signals from the existing multipath heart rate sensor -- the flashing green light on the back of the watch-- to monitor your pulse. If it suspects your pulse was lost, additional sensor signals will be activated to search for the pulse or identify movement. When nothing is detected, the watch prompts you with an initial check-in. If you don't respond to the message on the watch and no motion is detected, a loud alarm will play, and a countdown will appear on the screen. Then, an emergency services call is placed on your LTE smartwatch or phone. An automated message about the loss of pulse and your location will be shared with emergency operators. While the Loss of Pulse Detection feature wasn't made for a specific health condition, this is another feature added to the Pixel 3's impressive catalog of safety and health features, such as fall detection and irregular heart rhythm notifications. As a Google Pixel user, I'm happy to see another feature in the medical safety space, especially for one in which immediate intervention is necessary.

If you're considering a Pixel Watch but don't want to spend a fortune on the newest model, choosing a refurbished model is one way to save a decent chunk of change.
