Dhanbad: The district administration will intensify surveillance on academic institutions to eradicate tobacco consumption among students, as part of a renewed drive under the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP).
Addressing a meeting of the Tobacco Control Coordination Committee on Tuesday, additional district magistrate (law and order) Piyush Sinha emphasised a targeted campaign against tobacco use in both govt and private schools and colleges across the district. "Our anti-tobacco drive will now primarily focus on academic institutions. Special teams will ensure strict compliance with anti-tobacco norms in schools and colleges," said Sinha.
Public places like railway stations, bus stands, and market areas will also be brought under strict monitoring. "I have ordered officials to identify and compile a list of all shops and roadside stalls involved in selling tobacco products. Strict action will be taken against violators," the ADM said.
DSP D N Banka, who was also present in the meeting, said that officers in-charge of all police stations have been directed to maintain constant surveillance in their respective areas to curb tobacco sales, especially near educational institutions.

The move comes amid rising concern over increasing tobacco use among minors and students, which has been linked to easy availability of tobacco products near schools and colleges. The administration aims to implement Section 6 of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), which prohibits sale of tobacco products within 100 yards of educational institutions.
Officials from the health department, police, education sector, and municipal bodies were present during the meeting. The district administration has called for a coordinated approach to ensure that the anti-tobacco initiative is effectively implemented at all levels.
