Scottish Labour win Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse by-election after stunning victory over SNP
The result comes after one of the most bitter by-elections in Scotland in decades. Scottish Labour have recorded a stunning victory in the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse by-election. Davy Russell will be the new MSP for the constituency after defeating the SNP's Katy Loudon. Reform UK, who were accused of running a racist campaign, were a distant third. Labour taking the seat from the SNP is a massive boost for party leader Anas Sarwar ahead of next year's Holyrood election. Prime Minister Keir Starmer had stayed away from the seat over concerns he was not seen as an asset. But Labour sources say an effective ground operation, allied to Russell's popularity with local voters, were key issues. The by-election was triggered by the death of the SNP's Christina McKelvie. Keir Starmer says he will not support a second independence referendum as Prime Minister
The Labour leader said his Government would instead be focused on its own priorities Keir Starmer has said he will not support an independence referendum while he is Prime Minister. The Labour leader said 'nobody' is raising indyref2 as their 'first priority". In an interview with BBC's Good Morning Scotland, Starmer said an SNP victory at next year's Holyrood election would not change his mind. "I think it's really important to focus on the priorities that matter most," he said. "We got a big election win last year on the basis that we would stabilise the economy and ensure that on that foundation we built a stronger Scotland in a stronger United Kingdom and that's what I intend to do." Starmer said of his recent talks with SNP First Minister John Swinney: He said: "Nobody's raising that with me as their first priority, certainly in the discussions I'm having with the first minister. "We're talking about jobs, energy, security and dealing with the cost of living crisis." Swinney has not set out a detailed route map to independence since he succeeded Humza Yousaf, but he has spoken of securing "demonstrable support" for independence. Net migration in UK falls by half in boost to Prime Minister Keir Starmer
The figures showed the figure fell to 431,000 in the year to December last year. Sir Keir Starmer has received a boost after new figures showed a slump in net migration - a top priority of the UK Government. The figure stood at a provisional 431,000 in the year to December 2024, down 50% from 860,000. This is the largest numerical drop on record. The previous biggest calendar year fall was during the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic, when net migration dropped from 184,000 to 93,000. Net migration is the difference between the number of people coming to live in the UK long-term and the number of people leaving to live in another country. The figures came from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). This is a breaking news story - we'll bring you updates, pictures and video as it happens. The Prime Minister said his government is "looking at" making more people eligible for payment at the next fiscal event. Keir Starmer has announced a partial U-turn on the Winter Fuel Payment cuts. The Prime Minister said his government is "looking at" making more people eligible for payment at the next fiscal event. He said during Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday: 'I recognise that people are still feeling the pressure of the cost-of-living crisis including pensioners. "As the economy improves, we want to make sure people feel those improvements in their days as their lives go forward. "That is why we want to ensure that as we go forward more pensioners are eligible for winter fuel payments. 'As you would expect Mr Speaker, we will only make decisions we can afford, that is why we will look at that as part of a fiscal event.' The Labour Government made the benefit means tested last year. It means that now only those who are on Pension Credit are eligible. This is a breaking news story - we'll bring you updates, pictures and video as it happens.
