One of the greatest platformers of all time is currently free on Android

TL;DR Limbo is currently free on both PC and Android via the Epic Games Store. The stylish 2010 title is considered one of the best platformers ever made. It will be free until June 5, but it remains in your account forever once claimed. Platforming games have long been one of the best suited to playing on phones, and if you act quickly, you can grab one of the best platformers of all time for keeps. The essential horror/puzzle/platform title Limbo is the latest free game on the Epic Games Store, and it's available on both PC and Android. In case you somehow missed Playdead's 2010 classic, Limbo is a stylish black and white platformer where you control a boy searching for his sister in a dangerous land. Many of the game's puzzles rely on trial and error, with the expectation that the player will frequently die and restart from the last checkpoint. Once claimed, the game will remain on your account forever. Each of those deaths is pretty gruesome. You'll be impaled by giant spiders, crushed in hydraulic presses, and smashed by bear traps as you make your way to the end of the game. Despite this, watching your character ragdoll due to the unique physics engine is actually a highlight. The game was released on Android over a decade ago, but the critically acclaimed 2016 sequel Inside has not. It was ported to iOS way back in 2017, but for whatever reason, it never received an Android release. Playdead's third game has been in development for more than eight years at this point, but there's still no news on a release date. Regardless, you can claim Limbo from the Epic Games Store for free until June 5, so don't miss out. Once claimed, it will remain on your account forever. On PC, you can grab both Limbo and Tiny Tina's Wonderland. Got a tip? Talk to us! Email our staff at Email our staff at news@ . You can stay anonymous or get credit for the info, it's your choice.

"You can't rewrite the past just because of a bad breakup": Legendary indie devs' feud is going public

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. The developers behind Limbo, the 2011 game that helped the industry take indies more seriously, have been feuding for a while, and now it's been made even more public thanks to a recent LinkedIn post and a company statement. Dino Patti, co-founder of Playdead and an executive producer on both Limbo and Inside writes: "My old partner has threatened me with an IP lawsuit because I used a publicly available picture, in a LinkedIn post three months ago, of the game Limbo that we created at Playdead together. Arnt, last time you tried to bully me, I told you I'd make it public." The Arnt he's referring to is Arnt Jensen, a former IO Interactive developer who co-founded Playdead with Patti and is the director of Limbo and Inside. Patti addresses him directly and claims the "hard truth" is: "You know I was a significant part of building Playdead from the ground up—I know it too. Those first years were a battle like no other. We fought, built, and pushed through together. Without me, Playdead wouldn't have existed. That's not ego. That's a fact [...] You can't rewrite the past just because of a bad breakup." Patti is no longer at Playdead. He left in 2016 after the launch of Inside and created his own studio, Jumpship, which released Somerville in 2022. Playdead is working on its third game. Since the split, it seems Patti's role at Playdead has been downplayed, and he writes, "You [Arnt] have a gift. You are a genius. I know you refuse to recognize my role—or anyone else's. That isn't just a flaw in leadership. It's a flaw in character." Playdead has responded in a statement to Game Developer, writing: "We have found it necessary to take this action to protect our trademarks and copyrights, which are essential to Playdead's business and reputation." Patti concludes his LinkedIn post with the following plea: "Arnt, please stop the bullying. I will not stop being who I am." While you're here, check out some of the must-play indie games of 2024 that you may have missed. Hopefully they don't come with as many arguments attached.

Studio Behind Beautifully Haunting Sci-Fi Adventure Somerville Gets Second Shot At Independence

After Playdead released Inside in 2016, co-founder Dino Patti split off from the critically acclaimed indie studio amid a messy business breakup and ultimately went on to create Jumpship, another small studio working on similarly eerie and evocative adventure games. That mission now has a chance to continue after Jumpship was recently spun off by its chaotic owners. 'Jumpship has always been about pushing the boundaries of emotions, storytelling, and innovation in gaming,' Patti, who was executive producer on both Limbo and Inside, said in a press release. 'I want to take the company in a completely new direction while staying true to that vision.' Purchased by Swedish publishing group Thunderful in 2022 after the release of its first game Somerville, Jumpship was recently sold back to the Playdead co-founder along with a stake in Sad Owl Studios, maker of the excellent Viewfinder, late last year as Thunderful engages in multiple rounds of cuts and layoffs. 'This is more than just a business decision; it's about reigniting the passion and vision that first sparked Jumpship—while taking it further than ever before,' Patti said. This time around, however, he'll be doing it without studio cofounder Chris Olsen, who was the director on Somerville, or the rest of its development team. The group's 2022 debut indie game channeled the cinematic puzzle adventure DNA of Limbo and Inside but without the refined gameplay. It was visually striking and told a beautiful, tense story of a father trying to find his family amid a mysterious alien invasion, but struggled to win over players who found the controls frustrating and the linear exploration unintuitive. Thunderful, meanwhile, continues to face challenges. SteamWorld Heist 2, one of last year's standout tactical RPGs, didn't quite break out like its predecessor, and Kotaku understands that many of the team were laid off during the publisher's latest round of cuts last year. .
