OnePlus Brings 'Plus Key' On New Phones To Replace The Alert Slider: What Is It And How It Works

Last Updated: OnePlus 13s launch will also give us the first look at the new Plus Key that will be replacing the iconic Alert slider button. OnePlus has confirmed the details about the Plus Key which replaces the iconic Alert Slider on its upcoming phones, including the OnePlus 13s. The older button helped you switch between ring, vibrate and silent mode with a click but the Plus Key is a sign of how AI is going to become a bigger part of OnePlus future strategy. The company is going to use the iPhone-like model with the Plus Key which has features similar to the Action Button that Apple introduced a few years back. But the big play for OnePlus with the new Key is to help you organise, save and remember content based on your previous tasks. The Plus Key on the OnePlus 13s sits on top-left of the device and is a functional physical button with tactile feedback. By default, you can click on it to put the phone on Silent, Vibrate and Ring. But that's just the start. You can head over to Settings – Plus Key and really explore the varied nature of the button and how you can customise its use, more like a shortcut for one of the useful features. You can use it for the following: The Bigger, Private AI Play The Plus Key is getting a big leg up with the new OnePlus AI focus that promises personal intelligence. The company claims the data is processed on-device in most cases but in situations where the data has to be sent to the cloud server, OnePlus is adopting an Apple-like private computing system. The brand explained that highly sensitive light data will be processed on-device, but highly sensitive extensive data will be moved to the private computing cloud. These are some big changes from OnePlus, one that it feels aligns with the AI-focused approach that most brands are offering for the consumers. The OnePlus 13s will mark the debut of these features and the Plus Key with the OnePlus 15 flagship taking it a further notch higher later this year. First Published: May 28, 2025, 12:33 IST

OnePlus dumps its famous Alert Slider but it's for one very good reason

If you've ever owned a OnePlus flagship phone then you'll be familiar with the alert slider – it's an easy way to switch the phone into silent when it's in your pocket and it's always been a feature I'm surprised more Android phone makers didn't adopt. Now though, the button has been axed, starting with the OnePlus 13s which will be available in India after a 5 June launch. This phone isn't coming to the US or Europe, though it will have implications for countries outside India since it's the first OnePlus phone to replace the Alert Slider with a new button – known as the Plus Key. And to avoid any confusion, the company confirmed it will be coming to 'all OnePlus smartphones launching this year.' However, the main use for it is to add webpages, messages and other bookmarkable info to a baked-in feature known as the Plus Mind. Nothing also has something similar, known as Essential Space. Essentially, it's a bit like a catalog for all your key info, an alternative to saving things in apps like Google Keep or Microsoft OneNote. Much like other vendors, OnePlus is toting this as increasing personalisation. This transition is very similar to the Action Button change on Apple's iPhone and like that button you can also choose its function (so you can keep using it to silence your phone if you want), start the camera or begin translation. Play And, if you map the button to an alternative use, you can swipe up with three fingers to add things to your Plus Mind instead. This gesture means that Plus Mind will also come to the OnePlus 13 and OnePlus 13R as well (since there is obviously no dedicated Plus Key) via a software update. You're also able to use the feature to extract information. So it could use it to extract event info from an image and add it to your calendar for example. Of course, this is all part of OnePlus AI – the company's somewhat belated push into AI features. But while it might be somewhat later than many rivals, it is offering a lot of the same features as others. And aside from some image editing shortcuts, there's no real evidence that AI tricks are proving a hit with consumers. Additional OnePlus AI features coming this year AI VoiceScribe: Enables users to record, summarise, and translate calls and meetings directly within popular messaging, video, and online meeting applications. AI Call Assistant (coming to India only for now): On the OnePlus 13s, the OnePlus Dialer will offer options for automatic Call Summaries or real-time Call Translation during calls. AI Translation: Consolidates all translation capabilities – text, live voice, camera-based, and screen translation – into a single, intuitive app, making it easier to understand foreign languages and connect globally. AI Search: AI Search enables conversational, natural language queries, seamlessly searching local files, settings, notes, and calendars for contextually relevant results. Integrated with AI Plus Mind, it enhances productivity through intuitive, interactive searches. AI Reframe: Intelligently analyses photo scenes, identifies the subject, and adjusts composition, generating multiple creative framing options for users to choose from. AI Best Face 2.0 (coming this summer through an update): Enhances group photos by automatically detecting and correcting issues like closed eyes or suboptimal expressions for more polished results. This feature supports images with up to 20 individuals and works even with photos captured on other devices. OnePlus is also adding Google Gemini integration, similar to parent company Oppo and it will work across OnePlus' own apps as well as Google's ones. On device AI processing is prioritised where more sensitive information is used, although the company states that its own private cloud will keep data private. The company also says it recently rolled out support for Oppo's O+ Connect for the OnePlus 13R which enables uses to do file transfers and more between their OnePlus device and MacOS computer, either through the O+ Connect app, or via a drag and drop interface in the Finder.

OnePlus introduces personalised AI features and hardware on upcoming 13s model: All you need to know

OnePlus has announced a strategic expansion into artificial intelligence with the launch of 'OnePlus AI', alongside a new hardware feature dubbed the 'Plus Key', which will debut on the forthcoming OnePlus 13s. Positioned as part of the company's broader push towards personalised AI integration, the Plus Key marks a new direction for hardware design. It builds on the legacy of the Alert Slider and allows users to assign custom functions — such as activating the camera, switching audio profiles, or initiating translations. The key will also serve as a gateway to 'AI Plus Mind', a new AI-driven feature that enables users to save and organise on-screen information. Through either a button press or a three-finger swipe, users can store content like schedules or event details. The system can then contextually analyse the saved material and integrate it with apps like calendars, promising a more structured approach to digital information management. Alongside the hardware addition, OnePlus revealed a suite of AI-based tools aimed at improving productivity and user interaction. These include: AI VoiceScribe : A tool to record, summarise, and translate calls and meetings within commonly used messaging and video applications. : A tool to record, summarise, and translate calls and meetings within commonly used messaging and video applications. The company also detailed an upcoming integration with Google's Gemini AI across OxygenOS and Google applications, enabling features such as real-time screen and camera sharing with AI-assisted interaction. In terms of data privacy, OnePlus outlined its Private Computing Cloud (PCC) approach, which supports both on-device processing and cloud-based computation within a secure, encrypted environment. The architecture utilises a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) to safeguard sensitive user data throughout its storage, processing, and transmission phases.

OnePlus AI revealed alongside Plus Key ahead of OnePlus 13s launch in India

OnePlus today, on May 27, finally unveiled its own AI brand for its smartphones. Following in line with other manufacturers and giving its AI features a brand, OnePlus is calling its AI suite: OnePlus AI. Alongside the OnePlus AI features, the brand has also unveiled a new hardware edition that facilitates these AI features; it is called the Plus Key and it is going to be available on OnePlus' upcoming compact flagship, the OnePlus 13S, in India. OnePlus says that it is going to be launching a host of new features under the OnePlus AI brand. Some of these include OnePlus AI Voice Scribe, which lets you record, summarise, and even translate calls and meetings within messaging and online meeting apps. India is also getting a OnePlus AI Call Assistant. On the OnePlus 13, the OnePlus dialer will now feature support for automatic call summaries and real-time call translation during calls, which could be handy to get rid of language misunderstandings. And then there is going to be a translation feature, which essentially brings all translation capabilities, including text, live voice, camera-based, and screen translation, into a single app. And then there is also AI Search, AI Reframe, and AI Best Face 2.0. At the same time, OnePlus has also partnered with Google and now says that OnePlus is going to have better synergy with Gemini, with Google Gemini working across OnePlus' own apps, including the OnePlus Notes app, OnePlus Clock app, as well as other Google apps. Also, Gemini Live with camera and screen sharing will also let users see what is being captured by the camera and what is on the screen. We have seen new hardware buttons debuting on various smartphones. Apple debuted the Action Button with the iPhone 15 Pro last year, and now all iPhone 16 series models feature the Action Button. Other manufacturers also followed suit. And now OnePlus has also jumped on the bandwagon and introduced its new button, which it is calling the Plus Key. OnePlus says that this is a customisable hardware button that is first going to debut on the OnePlus 13S, which launches in just a few weeks. After the OnePlus 13S, the brand says it is going to be present on all OnePlus smartphones launching this year. The company calls it an "evolution of the OnePlus Alert Slider," which has been present on OnePlus devices for years now. It facilitates functions like switching sound profiles, launching the camera, starting translation, or starting recordings. In addition, the key also brings features like AI Plus Mind, which lets you quickly save and recall details on your screen. This, in a way, is similar to an essential key feature that Nothing debuted with its earphones. Regarding this functionality, OnePlus says that when users come across information that they would like to access later, this could be a schedule, event details, reservations, or listings, they can simply store or capture it by pressing the Plus Key. Or, they can swipe up with three fingers to do this as well. After this, the OnePlus AI Plus Mind will save this on-screen content to a dedicated Mind Space, so that they can come back to and access it. The feature will also be able to contextually analyse content, including being able to extract schedule details from an image and then add them to your calendar, and more. OnePlus says that AI Plus Mind will be present on the OnePlus 13S, and it will be available for the in rest of the OnePlus 13 series as well, after a future software OTA update. OnePlus takes a page from Nothing with its newest feature

TL;DR The upcoming OnePlus 13s replaces the traditional Alert Slider with a customizable hardware button called the Plus Key. Amongst other remappable functions, this key launches AI Plus Mind, which uses contextual intelligence to save and organize screen content within a dedicated Mind Space. While similar to Nothing's Essential Key and Essential Space, OnePlus offers greater flexibility through button remapping and gesture controls. These days, Android flagships are more than just specifications, with companies being very bullish on AI features and their potential to improve the conventional phone experiences. OnePlus had already jumped on the AI bandwagon with features like AI Eraser and AI Summary that arrived with Oxygen OS 14 and 15. Now, OnePlus is consolidating the plethora of its AI features under the OnePlus AI branding, adding Gemini support to its stock apps, and launching the new AI Plus Mind feature, which will debut with the OnePlus 13s. OnePlus's Alert Slider gives way to the Plus Key Starting with the upcoming OnePlus 13s, scheduled to launch on June 5, OnePlus has gotten rid of the iconic Alert Slider. In its place is the new Plus Key, a hardware button that can be remapped between several functions beyond just toggling your device's ring state. You can still use it to switch sound profiles, but you can remap it to launch the camera, initiate a translation, or start audio recording. If the Plus Key sounds familiar, that's because we've seen a similar transition from Apple. With the iPhone 15 Pro series, Apple got rid of the Mute switch in favor of the customizable Action button. The entire iPhone 16 series adopted the Action button, and we expect the trend to continue for the foreseeable future. Similarly, OnePlus's Plus Key is here to stay, and the company plans to launch it with all OnePlus smartphones this year. The Plus Key is the key to OnePlus AI's AI Plus Mind and Mind Space One of the primary features that the Plus Key unlocks on the OnePlus 13s is AI Plus Mind, a new feature that lets you quickly save, catalog, and recall key information displayed on your phone screen. When users find information they wish to retain for later use, like schedules, event details, reservations, listings, and more, they can capture and store it in AI Plus Mind by pressing the Plus Key (after remapping) or through a three-finger swipe-up. AI Plus Mind then 'intelligently' saves the relevant on-screen content to a dedicated Mind Space, so all this saved information remains easily accessible in one location. Beyond the simple screen capture, OnePlus says AI Plus Mind uses AI to analyze content contextually. For instance, it can extract schedule details from an image or text and add them directly to the user's calendar. Further, the AI Search feature in OnePlus Launcher integrates with AI Plus Mind, so you can use natural language queries to locate saved information quickly. The company says that AI Plus Mind will also automatically categorize saved content later this year for better organization. Even further in the future, OnePlus hopes to integrate an LLM into Mind Space and build a Persona feature that will share everything that Plus Mind has summarized about you. OnePlus's vision for AI Plus Mind is to provide recommendations and suggestions based on the user's details and provide a better and more personalized AI assistant integration. These planned features are far out in the future, so don't hold your breath on them just yet. AI Plus Mind and Mind Space sound a lot like Nothing's Essential Space C. Scott Brown / Android Authority Once again, if AI Plus Mind and Mind Space sound familiar to you, that's because we have recently seen a very similar feature, this time from Nothing. Nothing has included an Essential Key on its Phone 3a series and the CMF Phone 2 Pro. This dedicated button launches the AI-powered Essential Space app, which captures screenshots, photos, and audio recordings. The AI then processes this information to create reminders and to-do lists. We have yet to test OnePlus's implementation ourselves, but it's immediately clear that a few things help the feature stand apart from Nothing. For starters, the OnePlus 13s' Plus Key is remappable, whereas the Essential Key cannot be easily remapped. OnePlus' AI Plus Mind also has an alternate trigger gesture, making it easy to access even if you remap the Plus Key. My colleague Ryan dearly missed gesture support for accessing Essential Space, so at least to this extent, OnePlus has brought an improved experience onboard with their implementation. However, there's no getting around the fact that the similarities in the bare concept of Essential Space and AI Plus Mind/Mind Space are striking. Hopefully, the feature isn't as half-baked as Nothing's implementation, and we hope to find that out soon with the OnePlus 13s. AI Plus Mind is coming to the rest of the OnePlus 13 series Aamir Siddiqui / Android Authority AI Plus Mind will also be available on the OnePlus 13 series through the three-finger swipe-up feature with a future update. The company didn't clarify the timeline or whether the feature will be available to the rest of its portfolio, but we're optimistic about a wider rollout. Got a tip? Talk to us!
