Celebrity hairstylist Jesus Guerrero's cause of death at 34 has been revealed
The cause of death for 34-year-old celebrity hairstylist Jesus Guerrero, Jr. has been released by officials.
On June 2, the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner announced Guerrero died from "Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia and disseminated Cryptococcus neoformans due to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome." The manner of death was determined to be natural.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, "Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) is a rare, serious lung infection caused by the fungus Pneumocystis jirovecii." PCP patients typically have weakened immune systems due to certain health conditions or medications.
Cryptococcosis, per the CDC, is "a fungal disease caused by breathing in spores from Cryptococcus, a fungus found in the environment. The infection can affect the different parts of the body but usually causes lung or brain infections." Individuals with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to those infections.
According to the medical examiner, "Mr. Guerrero arrived at a local hospital on the afternoon of February 21 after complaints of not feeling well." A doctor pronounced him dead at 12:48 a.m.
The cause and manner of death were certified June 2, more than two months after Guerrero's death on Feb. 22.
Shortly after his death, Guerrero's family started a GoFundMe, which ultimately raised $96,000 to cover expenses related to his death.
"He is a son, a brother, an uncle, an artist, a friend, and so much more. Born and raised in Houston, TX to immigrant parents, Jesus learned how to work hard and dreamt of taking his skills to the top," the fundraiser's description read. "Unfortunately, his passing came very suddenly and unexpectedly."
