Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to be released tomorrow, and with it comes a host of updates, both free and paid, for Nintendo Switch games. Among those are Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, the most recent games in the Pokémon series, and it looks like developer Game Freak has gone all out with the updates. A number of press previews for the Switch 2 updated version of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet went live overnight, and the game is looking and running significantly better than it did on the Nintendo Switch. Preview footage for the update shows the game running above 1080p, up from a dynamic 1080p on Switch 1, at a locked 60fps, more than double what was possible with the game on the Switch. A screenshot of the increased spawn rate in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet on the Nintendo Switch 2. A screenshot of the increased spawn rate in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet on the Nintendo Switch 2. The Pokémon Company Fans have also noticed that the spawn distance and number of spawns available on screen has significantly increased, with some saying the number is as high as 30, up from a hard limit of 16 on Switch. The news has come as a shock to fans who were expecting more modest upgrades from Game Freak. Many were expecting the update to lock the resolution to 1080p – it previously typically hovered at around 900p when docked – and a stable 30fps. The game on Switch had well-documented performance problems, including frequent frame drops below its 30fps target. The performance issues for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet were immediately noticed at launch, with fans outraged by the state of the game. In addition to performance issues, the games frequently suffered from bugs and glitches, and Nintendo, the game's publisher, had to apologise for the state it launched in. Now, it looks like Game Freak has made good on the game, finally delivering acceptable performance and a much higher resolution. Those performance and visual enhancements will also be present on Switch 2 in the next game in the series, Pokémon Legends Z-A, which is set to be released late this year on Switch and Switch 2.

Nintendo Switch 2 updates for over 12 Switch games live now including Pokémon

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Super Mario Odyssey, and others have all received widespread improvements on the Switch 2 console, as Nintendo releases the full patch notes. While the core appeal of the Switch 2 might hinge on new exclusives like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza, the new console will also improve the performance of many existing Switch 1 titles. Nintendo previously confirmed 12 original Switch games would receive improvements on the Switch 2, ranging from ARMS and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker to Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Ahead of the Switch 2's launch on Thursday, June 5, Nintendo has rolled out these updates, with some titles not previously mentioned also getting minor upgrades. Beyond the aforementioned titles, the other previously confirmed games with Switch 2 updates are Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Super Mario Odyssey, Zelda: Link's Awakening, Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom, Big Brain Academy: Brain Vs. Brain, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Game Builder Garage, and 51 Worldwide Games. The updates vary between titles, but some add GameShare support (where you can share games locally with just one cartridge), mouse controls, or improvements to the visuals and frame rate. These will benefit certain games more than others, but the improvements to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, which was marred by technical issues on the original Switch, appear to be quite drastic. Nintendo has released footage on the Nintendo Today app to highlight the improved visuals and frame rate, and it looks like a far smoother experience. Even though it was the bugs that were the main problem at release. All these updates are officially live now, so anyone who is picking up a Switch 2 can take advantage of them from launch day. More Trending Aside from these titles, a number of updates have rolled out for other original Switch games too, namely Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom, Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, Pikmin 3 Deluxe, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Kirby's Dream Buffet, Kirby Star Allies, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3. These updates appear to be less substantial, so we haven't listed them below, but all of them (minus Pikmin 3 Deluxe) have the same vague line in the patch notes: 'Several adjustments have been made to improve gameplay on Nintendo Switch 2.' Some of these have specific changes, with both Zelda titles getting additional language settings, while the update for Pikmin 3 Deluxe is to fix an issue where 'the entire screen flickers during some scenes in the game, such as when a day starts and ends'. An update is promised 'in the near future' to fix the issue completely on Switch 2. As for the other updates, you can check out the full patch notes below. Pokémon Gen 10 on Switch 2 is an 'oceanic adventure' as leaks reveal new info

A leaker has claimed they know what real world location the next mainline Pokémon games will be based on, and it involves a lot of sailing. Pokémon is bringing back the Paris-inspired Lumiose City from Pokémon X/Y in upcoming game Pokémon Legends: Z-A, but rumours suggest the next set of mainline games will head in an entirely different direction. Following 2022's Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, which added the likes of Quaxly and Sprigatito, we're officially heading into the tenth generation of Pokémon games, aka Gen 10. The games have not been officially announced, but they're expected to be released on the Switch 2 at some point relatively soon – with many fans expecting a 2026 launch. Now, according to a leaker, Nintendo is planning to launch Scarlet and Violet's successor on the Switch 2 next year, and the game's setting will apparently also be inspired by European geography and fauna. As posted by Centro Leaks on X, the next Pokémon games, codenamed Gaia, are said to 'take place in the Cyclades' – a cluster of Greek islands in the Aegean sea. 'Get ready for an oceanic adventure,' they added in the post, with a screenshot of a map of the actual Cyclades. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet took inspiration from Spain and Portugal for the Paldea region, while Sword and Shield's Galar region was based on the UK – so it's certainly possible that Greece could be next on the list. Get ready for an oceanic adventure 🏝️ It's true, we can confirm that Pokémon Gen 10, codenamed Gaia, will take place in the Cyclades! The game is planned for release next year exclusively for Switch 2 🛴 — Centro LEAKS (@CentroLeaks) April 25, 2025 The problem with the rumour is that Centro Leaks isn't considered particularly reliable in fan circles, but existing evidence also points towards a potential island setting. In files pulled from last year's 'teraleak' at developer Game Freak, an alleged exchange was highlighted between several employees, including the studio's director Shigeru Ohmori, where they said the next game after Scarlet and Violet would have 'an island theme'. The exchange, which is about concerns of overlapping ideas between projects, also suggests the next game will feature 'one of many islands' – hinting at some kind of sea traversal. A painting in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet also led to some speculation that the next region could be inspired by Italy or Greece, based on the image's architecture. Game Freak has been known to hide small references to the next game before, with Redditors having retroactively found hints to Gen 9 in Sword and Shield. If the island setting is true, this wouldn't be the first time Pokémon has adopted the theme, with Pokémon Sun and Moon's Alola region being inspired by Hawaii. A Greek take could be interesting though, especially with all the nation's mythology to mine. More Trending It also makes sense that the next mainline games will launch next year, as there's usually a three-year gap between core titles. If it does come out in 2026, that will be four years after Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, but the existence of Pokémon Legends: Arceus and its upcoming sequel Legends: Z-A has perhaps caused a slight schedule shift. That and complaints that Game Freak's tech is still behind the curve of other first party Nintendo games. Beyond Pokémon Legends Z-A, a new battle-focused spin-off called Pokémon Champions is also in development for Switch and mobile. A release date has yet to be announced.
