Palace Bar reopens under new ownership
Feb. 13—SUPERIOR — A bar with a checkered past has reopened under new ownership after a hiatus of nearly two years. The Palace Bar at 1108 Tower Ave. was shuttered in June 2022 when the former owner let its liquor license expire before the city could hold a public hearing on whether to renew it. The move was prompted by safety concerns. More than 150 calls for police services at the bar were received from Jan. 1, 2021, through March 18, 2022, including fights, battery, disturbances, a weapons violation and a shooting. When the former bar manager sought to reopen the business as a country-western-themed bar in 2022, the city council shot it down. The business is now owned by the Nelson family under Alyce's Palace LLC. Dan Nelson is the owner/operator, and his sister, Christie (Nelson) Payne, is the marketing director. "First and foremost, I think it's important that the community know that there's zero affiliation with us and the previous owners," Payne said. "Don't even know them," said tavern operator Dayna Engstrom. The city council on Feb. 4 issued a liquor license for the establishment to Gary Nelson, their father. He is also listed as the registered agent for Alyce's Palace LLC on the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions website. As a condition for issuing the license, Nelson had to prove ownership of the property, according to City Clerk Heidi Blunt. The bar reopened Feb. 6 and is now open from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m., seven days a week. "The days have been quiet, but some of the regulars have been coming back," Engstrom said. "Nights have been pretty steady." The family is committed to hiring all-new staff and maintaining a presence at the bar, Payne said. Dan Nelson plans to be at the property daily. "He's been there open to close since we started," Payne said, adding that they are in the process of hiring employees to check identification at the door, particularly on Fridays and Saturdays. "We're putting some processes and measures in place to make sure the folks who are coming to the bar are of age and, you know, any kind of illegal activity certainly just will not be tolerated. We have eyes on everything in this space," Payne said. It is intended to be a place for all, according to Payne. "We're looking for a clean, safe, fun atmosphere where people can come and unwind, and they can come as they are but still get good service and great drinks. It'd just be a cool hangout spot," she said. The new owners also seek to give back to the community in various ways, such as partnering with the upcoming Gitchee Gumee Brewfest and sponsoring a Polar Bear Plunge participant. They held a Super Bowl party Feb. 9 and a karaoke night Feb. 12. In addition to drinks, the bar has popcorn and carries an array of pizza options. "My brother already has an established business already in the Twin Ports area. He owns Anytime Towing," Payne said. "We actually have a very rich family history of businesses in Superior and so we were really looking for an opportunity as a family to purchase something that is established but still makes sense financially." The new venture is an opportunity to purchase the building and the business and bring it back to its former glory, she said. The plan is to one day pass it down to her 14-year-old niece, Alyce. The building that houses the bar was built in 1912. The Nelson family is eager to learn more about its history from patrons. "We've had a lot of people coming in because they see the lights on," Payne said, including a couple who were celebrating their 30th anniversary. "They came in and told Dan that it was where they had their first date. And they were so excited to see that it was open." She understands that there may be some concern from the community over the bar's reopening. "Really, we're encouraging them to come and see for themselves," Payne said. Visit the bar's Facebook page for more information.

ECU jumps into annual Polar Bear Plunge Thursday
GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — East Carolina University has brought back their annual Polar Bear Plunge for another year. The first plunge was in 1997 and had 35 participants. The largest Polar Bear Plunge to take place was in 2014 with 1,200 plungers. The tradition encourages students and staff to take a plunge in the ice-cold water of the Eakin Student Recreation Center outdoor pool. The first 650 plungers will be given a free t-shirt that was specifically designed for the event. Other activities will take place and students can get a custom Polar Bear Plunge tumbler for participation. The fun happens on Thursday at 5:30 when registration begins. An ECU 1 Card, swimsuit and waiver are required to participate in the plunge. The waiver can be found on the ECU Rec app. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
