LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – With ice still on the ground, the 2025 Central Arkansas Special Olympics Polar Plunged lived up to its name Saturday morning. Volunteers raised $12,000 to benefit Special Olympics. Saline County hosts polar plunge to benefit Special Olympics Arkansas The Law Enforcement Torch Run hosted the event at the Little Rock Racquet Club and at 10 a.m. with temperatures in the 30s, groups and individuals took the plunge. 'Special Olympics means so much to me just because I've got family members that are really involved with Special Olympics,' Joe Stitzman from State Farm Insurance in North Little Rock said. 'It just gives me an opportunity to give back to the community in a different way. It really means a lot to me, and I know it means a lot to my team as well.' Big game hunting permits awarded to 7 Kansas nonprofits, how can you get one?

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Multiple organizations in the Sunflower State were awarded hunting permits for 2025 and will soon share them with the community. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) announced on Monday, Feb. 10 that seven organizations will soon receive Commission Big Game Hunting Permits. At the start of every year, these permits are drawn at random by the KDWP Commission at its public meeting and awarded to nonprofit organizations that focus on wildlife conservation as well as hunting and fishing promotion. After organizations get these permits, they can be sold. The organization can keep 15%, while 85% goes to an conservation project that the organization and KDWP agreed upon. 'Last year, proceeds from Commission permits supported the Habitat Specialist program which is one of our key conservation partnerships with Pheasants Forever,' said Wes Sowards, assistant director of the wildlife division at KDWP. 'Habitat specialists work across the state to manage wildlife habitat on both private and public land with a special emphasis on conservation objectives in the State Wildlife Action Plan.' MANHATTAN (KSNT) – Law enforcement have arrested one person connected to a shooting that injured three people in Manhattan late last year. The Riley County Police Department (RCPD) shared in a news release that just before 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28 a 22-year-old Manhattan resident was arrested in connection to a shooting that took place on Dec. 1, 2024. The RCPD report that its License Plate Reader (LPR) cameras played a 'critical role' in identifying the alleged suspect's vehicle that was linked to the shooting. Officers were able to locate and apprehend the individual without any troubles. The 22-year-old Manhattan local was arrested on the probable cause offenses of the following: 12 counts of attempted murder in the first degree. Two counts of criminal discharge of a firearm into an occupied dwelling. Criminal damage to property. Unlawful discharge of a firearm in city limits. According to RCPD, the individual's total bond is $2 million. NE Kansas gears up for Polar Plunges to support Special Olympics Kansas Just before 6 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, 2024, officers responded to gunshots in the 1800 block of Claflin Road. The RCPD later found three people with gunshot injuries. This is an ongoing investigation; we will release additional information when it becomes available. NE Kansas gears up for Polar Plunges to support Special Olympics Kansas

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Communities in northeast Kansas are getting ready to support statewide Special Olympics with a cool fundraiser. Special Olympics Kansas is preparing for its coolest fundraiser of 2025, the Polar Plunge. The Polar Plunge is one of the organization's biggest fundraising opportunities that supports more than 5,500 athletes across the Sunflower State. 'Your contribution and involvement helps athletes achieve their goals on & off the field, have healthier lifestyles, and a sense of inclusion in their community.' Statement excerpt from Special Olympics Kansas website Kansas families can now apply for summer grocery assistance There are nine Polar Plunges taking place in the next couple of months in the Sunflower State. In Topeka, the plunge will take place at West Ridge Mall on Saturday, Feb. 8. Registration for the event will start at 8 a.m., the Polar Plunge will take place from 9-10 a.m. and a silent auction will be from 11 a.m. to noon. The Polar Plunge in Manhattan will take place at noon on Saturday, Feb. 15 at the Tuttle Creek State Park swim beach. Registration will open at 10 a.m. and the costume contest will start at 11:45 p.m. In Emporia, people can are going to take the plunge at Mouse Lake, 1000 Topeka Street.
