National Police Week brings thousands to D.C.
It's National Police Week — meaning you might be noticing frequent sirens and an influx of uniformed officers around D.C. The big picture: The annual honoring of law enforcement, with a focus on those killed or disabled in the line of duty, brings an estimated 40,000 people to D.C. from around the country, according to organizers. You might spot motorcycle units, some 2,000 officers and cyclists on the Police Unity Tour, and large police escorts accompanying families of the fallen to memorial events. The annual candlelight vigil, which draws thousands to the National Mall to honor slain officers, is scheduled for Tuesday at 8pm. Zoom in: President John F. Kennedy designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day in 1962. The annual memorial service launched 20 years later. The event has grown to include a variety of gatherings, from a gala to a survivors' conference for family members and colleagues.

Connecticut officers, loved ones bike 300 miles to D.C. for National Police Week
WASHINGTON, D.C. (WTNH) — Connecticut police officers, state troopers, and their loved ones peddled 300 miles to arrive in Washington, D.C. Monday, as part of the Police Unity Tour. They left from Hartford last week. Connecticut officers begin bike ride from Hartford to DC for Police Unity Tour Among the participants riding this year was Dominique Pelletier, the wife of Connecticut State Police Trooper First Class Aaron Pelletier, who was killed during a traffic stop last May. As soon as she arrived, Dominque and her son Troy first went to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and placed a picture of trooper Pelletier and a state police patch in his memory. Will Garten, brother of fallen Hartford police officer Bobby Garten, also joined the bike tour. The Unity Tour is part of National Police Week in the nation's capitol. RI police departments take part in annual Police Unity Tour
EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Police officers from multiple departments in Rhode Island are once again participating in the annual Police Unity Tour. The tour spans several states as officers throughout the country come together and ride bicycles from New Jersey to Washington, D.C. The ride ends at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. The goal of the tour, which first began in 1997, is to honor officers who died in the line of duty and raise money for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. According to the tour's website, they donated $2.2 million to the fund last year. Among the local police departments taking part in the ride are Cranston, Newport and East Providence. CSP discuss how state is responding to hate crimes
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Connecticut State Police held a public discussion in West Hartford on Thursday night to discuss how the state is responding to hate crimes. Members of their hate crimes investigative unit also attended to talk about how people can play a role in preventing hate crimes. Connecticut officers begin bike ride from Hartford to DC for Police Unity Tour 'I stand here today to try and help the community with the hate crime and make sure that we are trustworthy, and we are here to gather together and become a community so that we can stop the hate together,' Sgt. Nicholas Caez, said. Guests were able to ask state police questions about their work and took part in scenarios to teach them how to identify and report a hate crime.
