[UPDATED] Deputy IGP: Lorry driver in crash with FRU lorries has rape, theft convictions

TELUK INTAN: Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay confirmed today that the lorry driver involved in the crash that killed nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) policemen has criminal records, including a conviction for rape. Ayob stated that the 45-year-old man had six records: one related to drugs, four for theft and one for rape. "All cases resulted in convictions. A urine test came back negative. Despite online claims that he had consumed ketum, no traces of ketum were found, and his urine test results were clean," he said during a press conference at the Hilir Perak police headquarters today. He added that the man would be brought to the court here tomorrow for a remand hearing. Ayob said police would investigate the case from all angles, including claims that the driver had swerved to avoid another vehicle. "Police will gather statements and verify all such claims," he said. As for the post mortem, Ayob said up to 6pm today, it had been completed for three victims. "We understand that each post mortem will take between two to three hours. We estimate the process will be completed by 10pm or 11pm. "The hospital has assigned three doctors to perform the autopsies simultaneously. Once the post mortems are done, the bodies will be bathed at the hospital. "Funeral prayers will be performed at the Hilir Perak police headquarters surau here, followed by a second prayer session at PSP Unit 5, Sungai Senam. "Final respects will be paid there before the bodies are buried at their respective cemeteries," he said. Regarding the funeral locations, he said two will be in Kampar (Kampung Sungai Itik, Gopeng, and Kampung Orang Asli Bukit Terang) and three in Ipoh (the Buntong crematorium for the Indian officer, Kepayang cemetery and Meru Raya cemetery). He added that three will be laid to rest in Taiping, namely at Pantai Besar Batu Kurau Village, Simpang Mosque and Kampung Parit Teluk in Kuala Kurau. "Another will be laid to rest in Kedah, at the Tunku Abdul Rahman Mosque in Kulim," he said. Providing updates on the nine injured policemen, Ayob said six were in the red zone (critical condition), whereas three were in the yellow zone (moderate injuries). "One has been taken to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh for surgery," he added. When asked if any police assets were damaged during the accident, he said no other assets were affected besides the vehicles. After the press conference, Ayob also handed over aid to the families of the victims, reflecting the police and the government's commitment to the welfare of officers and personnel who died or were injured in the line of duty. Regarding the Police Welfare Fund, he said each family had received RM1,200, while under the Tabung Amanah Perwira dan Pertahanan Negara (TAPPN), RM25,000 will be provided for fatalities, RM8,000 to RM11,000 for serious injuries, and RM1,000 for minor injuries, based on medical assessment. "From the Perak police headquarters, RM11,000 will be given per affected policeman. In total, the victims' families will receive an estimated support package ranging from RM58,000 to RM299,000," he said. Ayob extended his deepest condolences to all affected families on behalf of the police, the inspector-general of police and the Home Ministry. "May those who have passed be placed among the righteous. May all their prayers be accepted, Insyaallah," he said.
