Poland to build Europe's largest logistics hub in Slawkow: Polish PM
WARSAW, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Poland will develop the largest logistics hub of its kind in Europe in Slawkow, Silesia, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Monday, emphasizing its strategic importance for Poland's economic interests. The expansion of the Euroterminal in Slawkow is a significant infrastructure project with an estimated total investment of 1 billion euros (1.14 billion U.S. dollars). According to Polish Press Agency, the Euroterminal in Slawkow is set to increase its annual capacity from nearly 285,000 to over 500,000 TEUs, significantly strengthening Poland's position in Europe's logistics network and supporting Ukraine's reconstruction. At the site, Tusk stressed the need to maintain Polish control over such critical infrastructure and highlighted the importance of active participation in Ukraine's reconstruction. "It is not just Ukraine, it is not just the eastern direction. That is why we are investing so much money and so much work to make Slawkow this European logistics power, this largest center in Europe, because it is such a logistics heart, where these flows are not only in the east-west direction, but also north-south," Tusk said. According to Polish Radio, the Slawkow Euroterminal is the European Union's only broad-gauge rail gateway for freight arriving from Ukraine and Asia. The terminal is located at the junction of the westernmost broad-gauge railway line (1520 mm) and standard-gauge lines (1435 mm), which facilitates the transshipment of containers transported by rail between Asia and Western Europe via Ukraine, among others.

Polish FM criticizes Hungary's stance on Russia, accuses it of lacking 'moral clarity'
Poland's Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski criticized Hungary on April 14 for being the only EU member state lacking "moral clarity" on Russia's war against Ukraine. After the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting earlier that day, Sikorski noted that many foreign ministers called for stronger sanctions against Moscow in response to recent attacks on Ukrainian cities including Sumy and Kryvyi Rih. "But we know we have one country – Hungary – that lacks the moral clarity we have in light of (Russian President Vladimir) Putin's attacks. He (Putin) talks about peace while bombing civilians and killing children,' he said, as reported by the Polish Press Agency (PAP). Sikorski also condemned Hungary's continued blocking of military aid for Ukraine and delaying EU accession talks, saying that trying to negotiate with Budapest is "like talking to a brick wall." Hungary maintains positive relations with Russia in contrast with other EU members. On March 26, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto visited Moscow to discuss continued economic cooperation between the two countries. Metal detectorist finds 1,000-year-old sword piece in Poland. ‘Hard to put into words'
Michał Młotek is no stranger to archaeological discovery. The metal detectorist, history buff, online museum founder and local government official used to spend a lot of his free time with the Iława Exploration Group search group, scouring the fields and forests around north-central Poland. 'Using metal detectors, we focus on finding traces of (an) early medieval settlement — dating back to before the official founding of the town,' Młotek told McClatchy News in an email on March 26. In previous searches, Młotek and the group discovered 11th-century coins, as well as a 'pochwy miecza,' or chape, the decorated end of a sword scabbard, in 2015, Młotek said. Now, with the chance to go back on the hunt, he's made another discovery, 'It was during one of these expeditions that I discovered the chape of a sword scabbard,' Młotek said. 'Since it wasn't the first sword chape I had discovered, I immediately recognized what it was.' He shared the discovery in a March 23 Facebook post. Młotek said the piece dates to the Middle Ages, about 1,000 years ago, and said it's a very rare find because it is so beautifully decorated and complete, despite being so old. 'It's hard to put into words the emotions of that moment — holding in my hand an object that had been buried in the ground for nearly a thousand years, lost or abandoned in a time when Prussian tribes still roamed these forests,' Młotek said in the email. The chape had a practical use — protecting the tip of a sword — but also an aesthetic and symbolic purpose, Młotek said in a March 25 interview with the Polish Press Agency. The iconography of the chap indicated social status and power and likely belonged to a specific team or group within the tribe, Młotek told the agency. The chape will join a collection at the Museum in Ostróda and is the fifth of its kind to be found from the Middle Ages, officials told the Polish Press Agency. 'Together with the ława Exploration Group, we would like to carry out more detailed research at the discovery site. However, at this stage, everything depends on the decision of the Elbląg delegation of the Provincial Office for the Protection of Monuments in Olsztyn, which oversees our activities. We are awaiting further guidelines and hope to continue our work at this promising location,' Młotek said. Młotek has been involved in historical treasure hunting for two decades and is the founder and operator of the Internet Museum of Iława, a completely online database and exhibitor for artifacts and pieces of Iława history. Iława is in north-central Poland, about a 150-mile drive northwest from Warsaw. Google Translate was used to translate the news release from the Polish Press Agency. Man Wakes Up, Finds That Large Chunk of SpaceX Rocket Has Crashed Into His Garden
A Polish man named Adam Borucki made an unusual discovery in his backyard after waking up one day: the purported remains of a second stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. As the UK tabloid The Daily Mail reports, Borucki reported the "large object about [five by three feet] in size" to the local police. "We are investigating how the object ended up in this location, but the important thing is that no one was harmed," police spokesman Andrzej Borowiak told the tabloid. It seems likely that the object once belonged to a Falcon 9 rocket that made an "uncontrolled reentry" over Poland early Wednesday morning, according to the Polish Space Agency. The incident serves as yet another reminder of the very real risks involved in having rockets uncontrollably drop back down to Earth. We've already seen several instances of SpaceX debris raining down over populated areas, from two separate Australian farms to the British islands of Turks and Caicos, which were recently littered with the exploded remains of SpaceX's prototype Starship rocket. As the Polish Press Agency reports, an "unidentified object resembling a tank" was also discovered by employees of a company near the Polish city of Poznan. It's unclear, however, if the object is related to the one Borucki discovered in his backyard. "We are securing the scene... explaining the circumstances of how this object ended up on the premises of the company," Poznan police officer Lukasz Paterski told the Polish Press Agency. "We know that parts from a Falcon rocket had flown over Poland, but whether this is part of it, we are not able to confirm at the moment." While officials have yet to confirm whether the object once belonged to the orbital rocket, space tracker extraordinaire and Harvard astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell told Futurism in an email that the recovered tank is the "right size and shape for the [composite overwrapped pressure vessel (COPV)] tanks used on the Falcon 9 upper stage." "Similar tanks have survived Falcon 9 stage 2 reentries in the past, showing similar damage (delamination)," he added. "And Poznan is right on the reentry path so it all hangs together. " Case in point, a similar-looking COPV tank was recovered from a farm in central Washington in 2021 after a second stage burned up over Oregon and Washington. "I am convinced this is genuine and is a fragment of the stage reentry," McDowell told Futurism. The rocket originally launched from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on February 1, delivering the latest batch of SpaceX's Starlink broadband satellites into orbit. Burning leftovers of the rocket lit up the night sky over not just Poland, but the neighboring Germany and Ukraine as well. Footage on social media shows a massive streak of heated-up rocket parts above Berlin. Unlike the first-stage booster of SpaceX's Falcon 9, which is designed to return to Earth in one piece to be reused, its second stage is intended to fall back towards Earth after delivering the rocket's payload in orbit, where it burns up in the atmosphere. However, parts of the second stage can survive the blistering journey, dropping out of the sky over a predetermined path — which, in some instances, can fall on populated areas.
