Tycoon drowns after losing control of his Lamborghini which flips and ends up in a ditch days after he purchased the supercar in Italy

A tycoon drowned after losing control of a Lamborghini he had purchased just days earlier. Luca Polito, a 51-year-old building contractor, had been driving his newly-bought Lamborghini Gallardo in Concordia Sagittaria, northern Italy, with a friend in the passenger seat when the terrible accident occurred on April 19. After father-of-one Mr Polito lost control of the vehicle, the supercar flipped and landed in an irrigation canal beside the road before quickly filling up with water. With Mr Polito and his friend trapped in the Lamborghini submerged in around 28cm of water, passersby alerted emergency services, who arrived at the scene quickly. Rescuers were able to free the businessman's friend before rushing him to a local hospital. When Mr Polito was released from the driver's seat, however, he was unresponsive. Emergency services tried to resuscitate the 51-year-old but he could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene. Mr Polito is thought to have drowned to death. His friend suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and remains in hospital. Following Mr Polito's death, the owners of his favourite restaurant in Concordia Sagittaria told Italian media: 'He was a special person - kind, thoughtful. 'He was always there when someone needed help.' The mayor of Concordia Sagittaria, Claudio Odorico said: 'The loss of a young entrepreneur is a heavy blow to the community.' The wrecked Lamborghini which Mr Polito crashed a matter of days ago has been pulled from the canal. Detectives are now working to establish whether mechanical error or human failure caused the 51-year-old to lose control. Mr Polito was survived by his parents and is tragically the last of his siblings to die after his two brothers passed away of serious illness. He had both a wife and a child.

Two Dedham School Committee members face legal troubles

In a loud voice, Walsh allegedly said he was 'going to [expletive] up Benzie and wage war on the middle school,' the report said. Advertisement Benzie told police Walsh had previously exhibited similar behavior last October, and the police report went on to say Superintendent Nan Murphy decided to issue a no-trespass order against Walsh to prevent him from entering the middle school again. 'Superintendent Murphy told me that after this incident she was in fear for the safety of her staff at Dedham Middle School,' the police report said, noting Murphy found the comments about waging war against the middle school particularly concerning. Walsh, who is running for re-election, did not respond to an email or phone call for comment. But in a Facebook post Walsh recently addressed the conflict, saying 'a parent's number one priority is to protect their child and there are always two sides to every story.' 'I will not resign or end my campaign as I remain as committed today as I was one year ago,' wrote Walsh. 'I will continue to be the voice of reason and will always apply common sense in any and all votes concerning the taxpayers and children of Dedham.' Walsh is facing competition at the polls on a parent volunteer who has held PTO leadership positions. Members are elected to the seven-member committee on staggered terms in the district south of Boston, which serves 2,700 students. Advertisement Meanwhile, Christopher Polito, who has served on the School Committee since 2021, is facing several charges tied to an alleged tax evasion scheme that stems from his previous work at Rochester Bituminous Products Inc., according to documents at Suffolk Superior Court. The case, which was filed by the state's attorney general's office in 2022, is slated to go to trial on May 6. Reached by phone Monday, Polito declined to comment. Between 2011 and 2013, Polito prepared sales tax returns for and provided other accounting and financial services to the company, where he was an employee at the time. The state Department of Revenue began auditing the company, including its sales of asphalt, in 2013, and 'noticed significant discrepancies and conflicting figures,' according to court documents. As a result of the 18-month long audit, the agency in 2015 issued a notice of intent to assess the company $677,185 in sales taxes, plus additional penalties and interest, according to court documents. The AG's Office eventually convinced a grand jury to charge Polito and the company's founder on several counts that included tax evasion, producing false documents, and obstructing the administration of tax laws, according to court documents. Polito, working in conjunction with the company's founder between 2014 and 2017, allegedly conspired and produced to the revenue department 'scores of false records of sales and other transactions in an effort to conceal Rochester's tax evasion and obstruct the administration of the audit,' according to court documents. Specifically, court documents say, the defendants produced 'false records to DOR that characterized taxable sales of asphalt as exempt from tax in an effort to defeat the audit.' The company itself also is facing charges. Advertisement Polito was James Vaznis can be reached at

Erie School Board discusses how to make up snow days from Black Friday snowstorm

A snowy winter has left the Erie School Board with four school days to makeup, and Wednesday night the discussion started as to what days students and teachers will be back in the classroom. Erie's Public Schools students likely rejoiced when a massive snowstorm gave them four extra days off school following their Thanksgiving break. But what goes up must come down, and now school officials are starting to discuss which days the students will have to make up. 'Tonight, we did propose to the school board that we make those up with four flexible instruction days where students will be able to learn from home asynchronously. That's going to be on the agenda for next week,' said Brian Polito, Erie's Public Schools superintendent. City of Erie Streets Dept. introduces 'pothole hotline' to help clean up winter damage The assistant superintendent proposed students return for flexible instruction during scheduled teacher in-service days in February, March and May. The plan also proposed that June 9 be added at the end of the school year for the final snow-make-up day. Polito said teachers will also have to come in for an additional four days for professional development on June 10-13. Erie Public Schools like Erie High School missed four days in December due to that heavy snowfall, but deciding which days to make up isn't always an easy thing to do. Protective cover being placed over U.S. Brig Niagara to avoid weather damage 'It's always a tough decision. We were kind of taken off guard by the snowstorm that had hit on Thanksgiving. The students were actually home the week of Thanksgiving so we were not prepared to have them do asynchronous. We did not send them home with work or devices,' said Polito. Polito said ideally they would have done flexible instruction days during the storm, but one way or another the schools have to be open for 180 days a year. Erie School Board will vote to approve or deny the snow make-up days at next week's school board meeting. In other business, Erie's Public Schools search for a superintendent continues with the last of the three finalists set to do her public forum session Thursday night.
