Dylan O'Brien called out by trans sibling after old interview resurfaces: ‘Didn't check in when I had surgery…'

In a shocking turn of events, Hollywood star Dylan O'Brien has found himself in hot water after being called out by his sibling for not being a supportive ally. The Teen Wolf and Maze Runner star, known for his advocacy of LGBTQ+ rights as well as his role in the queer drama Ponyboi, is now facing backlash after his trans sibling, Julz O'Brien, accused him of failing to check in during a significant personal moment — gender affirmation surgery. The controversy began when a 2024 interview featuring Dylan resurfaced online. In it, Dylan spoke about how grateful he is to have queer people, including his younger sibling, in his life. The interview, which was originally aired last January, showed Dylan reflecting on how his relationships with trans and nonbinary people have shaped both his personal life and professional career. 'I have a trans, nonbinary sibling,' Dylan said at the time. 'I know people in my personal life as well who are queer, and I am so grateful for how much it deepens my experience in this world.' While many were touched by Dylan's words, the situation took a dramatic turn when Julz O'Brien responded to a seemingly random comment on Instagram. In response to a post celebrating Dylan's words, Julz made it clear that his brother's public praise was not reflected in his actions. 'He didn't check in when I had top surgery,' Julz wrote. 'He didn't even wish me happy birthday last week! But glad I could deepen his experience in this world and make the world love him that much more.' The comment immediately caught the attention of fans, sparking a wave of reactions online. While many had previously admired Dylan for his openness and advocacy, Julz's claim painted a starkly different picture of the actor's private behaviour. Fans didn't hold back in expressing their shock and disappointment on social media. The backlash was swift, with several calling out Dylan for his alleged lack of support during such a personal and life-changing moment for his sibling. 'DYLAN IS TRANSPHOBIC???!!!!' one fan wrote on X. Another comment read, 'There goes y'all's favourite innocent white boy.' One more user added, 'Being transphobic in 2025 is weird as hell,' while another sharply noted, 'Hard truth is, public praise means nothing when private care is missing.' One more comment stated, 'This went from heartwarming to heartbreaking in 0.2 seconds—reminder: public praise means nothing without private support.' As of now, Dylan has yet to publicly respond to the accusations. The actor, who has previously been vocal about his LGBTQ+ advocacy, now faces the challenge of reconciling his public persona with the allegations made by his own sibling.

Actor Dylan O'Brien called out by trans sibling who claims they haven't spoken in 'over a year'

Actor Dylan O'Brien is making headlines after his sibling called him out for using their trans identity for clout. In a recently recirculated interview, the Teen Wolf star said he was 'grateful' to know trans people like his sibling, but now Julz O'Brien is speaking out about the two not having any contact in 'over a year.' 'He didn't check in when I had top surgery,' Julz commented on a since-deleted Instagram post by Gay Times, who were recirculating an old Vulture interview with Dylan from 2024. 'He didn't even wish me happy bday last week! But glad I could deepen his experience in this world and make the world love him that much more.' The original interview was to promote Dylan's upcoming queer drama Ponyboi, which tells the story of a gender-nonconforming character played by River Gallo. 'I have a trans, nonbinary sibling,' Dylan explained in the interview, per E! Online. 'I know people in my personal life as well who are queer and I am so grateful for how much it deepens my experience in this world.' See on Instagram After this comment from Dylan, his Ponyboi co-star Gallo complimented him on being so enlightened, 'This man is literally an example of what so many men should be.' This comment didn't seem to sit well with Julz, who commented multiple times on the social media post with the interview, including to point out that Dylan had referred to them as 'nonbinary' when in reality they are 'trans masc.' 'I'm actually trans masc and go by he/they pronouns,' Julz commented. While the two might not be close now, back in 2023, Julz posted a photo of the siblings on Instagram to celebrate Dylan's birthday with the caption, 'Happy Birthday, Dyl!! Love you so much.' Dylan has yet to publicly respond to his sibling's comments. Ponyboi will be released in theaters on June 27.

Dylan O'brien's trans sibling exposes truth amid actor's claims of support: 'Hasn't spoken to me in over a year"

Dylan O'Brien's transmasc sibling, Julz O'Brien, has said they have not spoken to the actor in over a year, despite his public comments in 2024 expressing support and gratitude for having queer people in his life. The remarks came in response to a resurfaced interview from the Sundance Film Festival, where Dylan promoted his film Ponyboi. In the interview, Dylan said, 'I have a trans, non-binary sibling and I know people in my personal life as well who are queer. I am so grateful for how much it deepens my experience in this world.' The comment was highlighted in a Gay Times Instagram post earlier this week. Julz, 35, replied directly in the comments, first clarifying that they identify as transmasculine and use he/they pronouns. 'He also hasn't spoken to me in over a year,' Julz wrote. 'He didn't check in when I had top surgery. He didn't even wish me a happy bday last week!' They added, 'But glad I could deepen his experience in this world and make the world love him that much more.' Julz also criticised the post and article for using their image and referring to them without reaching out. 'Kinda funny that this article didn't ask me for a single thing about myself? It's about me and uses my photo. I'm not even tagged,' they commented. Julz and Dylan previously appeared to be close, with multiple birthday posts over the years. In 2022, Julz wrote on Instagram, 'Happy Birthday, Dyl!! Love you so much,' alongside throwback photos. In earlier posts, they described Dylan as their 'very first best friend.' Dylan stars in Ponyboi as a character involved in a secretive relationship with an intersex protagonist, played by River Gallo. The film, which debuted at Sundance in 2024, is set for theatrical release this June.

Dylan O'Brien's trans sibling blasts him after actor gushed about them in interview

Dylan O'Brien's trans brother revealed the actor hasn't spoken to him in over a year, despite previously gushing about him in an interview. The Teen Wolf actor, 33, told Vulture in January of last year that he was grateful for his 'trans, nonbinary sibling' while promoting his queer thriller film Ponyboi. 'I have a trans, non-binary sibling and I know people in my personal life as well who are queer. I am so grateful for how much it deepens my experience in this world,' he said. However, Dylan's brother — who goes by Julz on Instagram and uses he/they pronouns — revealed the two are not seemingly as close as the actor made them out to be. After the Gay Times recently re-shared Dylan's comments to their Instagram account, Julz wrote underneath: 'He hasn't spoken to me in over a year. He didn't check in when I had top surgery. He didn't even wish me a happy bday last week!' 'But glad I could deepen his experience in this world and make the world love him that much more,' he added of his brother, who stepped out in drag for a Max series last year. has reached out to O'Brien's representatives for comment. In another comment on the post, Julz wrote, 'I'm actually trans masc and go by he/they pronouns', after his brother referred to him as non-binary. Julz' remark was made underneath a comment that accused O'Brien's girlfriend, model Rachael Lange, of being homophobic and racist. Maze Runner star Dylan has been promoting his upcoming film Ponyboi, which centers on an intersex sex worker having an affair with Dylan's character, possibly explaining why he wanted to emphasize his allyship through his family connection. After his trans brother's comments went viral, fans took online to blast Dylan. 'Truly diabolical to pretend to have a great relationship with your sibling, and paint yourself out to be an ally, when you don't even speak to that sibling,' one wrote. 'I feel like using other people's life experiences for brownie points is in poor taste, whether you're close with them or not. That's just my opinion tho,' another wrote. 'why even pretend to support your sibling knowing that you don't even talk to them or even acknowledge their birthday… for cool points? like i don't understand,' someone else questioned. 'This is honestly heartbreaking. Public words mean nothing if you're not there when it counts. Actions > posts.' After his trans brother's comments went viral, fans took online to blast Dylan 'In the upcoming queer drama PONYBOI .... and there it is. I hate how actors doing media buzz always fake a personal connection to something or someone also in that movie. it's a ridiculous expectation for romantic leads, for niche hobby movies, especially for queer films. You don't HAVE to be deeply involved with the movie's theme in your personal life, it doesn't make it better!' However, others defended the actor, with one writing, 'The interview was before they stopped talking. The magazine should had clarified it.' In March, Julz showed off the results of his top surgery, flashing his chest and post-surgery scars in a number of shirtless snaps. It's unclear what prompted the rift between the siblings. Julz previously shared an Instagram tribute to O'Brien for his birthday in August 2022. Julz also called Dylan 'my very first best friend' in an Instagram post from 2020. In Ponyboi, O'Brien — who previously starred in a Taylor Swift music video — plays Vinnie, the secret lover and pimp of a young intersex worker portrayed by River Gallo. The film debuted at Sundance in January 2024 and is scheduled for a theatrical release on June 27. In an interview with Adobe, Dylan admitted he was 'extremely uneducated' on the topics discussed in Ponyboi. 'Going in, I was extremely uneducated on intersex and the intersex community.' 'This was such an enlightening experience for me, and [River is] someone I hold so dearly now: a friend I'll have with me for the rest of my life.' Meanwhile Gallo previously gushed that Dylan 'is literally an example of what so many men should be.' O'Brien is primarily known for his role as Stiles Stilinski in the MTV supernatural drama series Teen Wolf, which ran from 2011–2017. He also played Thomas in the Maze Runner film trilogy.
