QU celebrates first PhD graduates of its Health Sciences programme
Tribune News Network Doha Qatar University (QU) has announced the graduation of the first two students from its PhD in Health Sciences programme, marking a significant milestone for QU Health and its commitment to advancing research aligned with Qatar's national health priorities. The PhD in Health Sciences, governed by the 'Health Sector Graduate Studies Office', offers two specialised tracks: Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Research and Clinical and Population Health Research. This year's achievement highlights the graduation of one student from each track, signaling the program's growing impact on national and global health research. Dr. Jazeel Abdulmajeed is the first graduate of the Clinical and Population Health Research track. His research addressed the appropriate use of effect measures in clinical research, proposing improvements that enhance the interpretation and reliability of healthcare evidence, particularly in observational studies and meta-analyses. Dr. Abdulmajeed said, 'My PhD aimed to improve the methodological foundations of clinical research to ensure that health decisions are based on accurate and meaningful evidence. I am honoured to be the first graduate of this track and proud to contribute to the advancement of research excellence at QU.' Dr. Abdulmajeed was supervised by Prof. Suhail Doi, head of the Department of Population Medicine at the College of Medicine. Prof. Doi said, 'Dr. Abdulmajeed's research offers important methodological solutions that improve how we assess and apply healthcare data in real-world settings.' In parallel with his academic work, Dr. Abdulmajeed also contributes to the Business and Health Intelligence Department at the Primary Health Care Corporation and has served in various roles at the Ministry of Public Health. On her part, Nadin Younes, the first graduate of the Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Research track, focused her doctoral work on improving disease diagnostics. Her research led to the development of rapid, cost-effective tools to detect Norovirus and Hepatitis E Virus — pathogens that pose a high risk in densely populated and resource-limited environments. 'I aimed to design accessible and affordable diagnostic tools that could support early detection and better outbreak control,' Younes explained. 'I'm thankful to my supervisor and the supportive research environment at QU Health that made this possible.' Supervised by Prof. Gheyath Nasrallah, professor of Immunology and Microbiology at the College of Health Sciences, her work resulted in the creation of a novel lateral flow assay for Norovirus, which is now undergoing regulatory review with support for potential commercialisation. A complementary test for Hepatitis E Virus is also nearing completion. 'Nadin's research addresses a pressing public health need and demonstrates the potential of applied biomedical innovation in Qatar,' said Prof. Nasrallah. Dr. Muhammad Abdul Hadi, coordinator of the Clinical and Population Health Research track, emphasised the broader importance of this achievement, 'This graduation signifies more than academic success — it reflects our programme's vision of developing researchers who are equipped to address complex health challenges. We are proud of our graduates for setting a strong precedent for future cohorts,' Abdul Hadi said. Dr. Asad Javaid, coordinator of the Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Research track, also praised the significance of this achievement, saying, 'The success of our first graduate is a powerful testament to the relevance and innovation embedded in our curriculum. This programme is designed to empower researchers to translate scientific discovery into practical solutions that address real-world health challenges. Nadin's achievement is just the beginning of the impact we aim to deliver—both in Qatar and beyond.' With this milestone, QU continues to expand its role as a leader in health research and innovation, contributing to the nation's long-term goals under Qatar National Vision 2030.

Govt revamps employment survey, extends quarterly data to rural India for the first time
Synopsis The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) will enhance labour force data dissemination by publishing the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) monthly, starting with the April 2025 bulletin in May 2025. Furthermore, quarterly survey results will extend to rural areas, providing comprehensive employment-unemployment indicators for the entire country, with the first bulletin expected in August 2025. Announcing changes to the Periodic Labour Force Survey, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) will increase its publication of labour force data, including quarterly employment estimates to rural areas for the first time. ADVERTISEMENT The first monthly bulletin for April is scheduled for release in May, the ministry said, adding that the quarterly results of the survey will be published for rural, urban, and combined areas. The revamped PLFS sample design from January 2025 will result in the following: Availability of monthly estimates of key labour market indicators at the country level: The revamped PLFS sample design will enable generation of the monthly estimates of key labour market indicators viz. Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR), Worker Population Ratio (WPR) and Unemployment Rate (UR) at the all-India level following the Current Weekly Status (CWS) approach. The monthly estimates will help in timely policy interventions. The first monthly bulletin of PLFS for the month April, 2025 is scheduled to be released in May, 2025. Extending quarterly estimates to rural areas: At present PLFS provides quarterly labour market indicators for the urban areas only. With the updation in the PLFS sample design quarterly estimates of employment unemployment indicators will be available for both rural and urban areas and hence for the entire country. The first quarterly bulletin of PLFS covering both rural and urban areas for the quarter April-June, 2025 is slated to be released in August 2025. Moving to the approach of calendar year reporting: From the year 2025, the annual PLFS results will be brought out based on the calendar year i.e. survey period of January – December of a specific year (e.g. January 2025 – December 2025). This change in disseminating the PLFS annual results and unit level data will facilitate comprehensive analysis of labour market performance through review of key employment unemployment indicators and also assist in timely updation of India's labour market statistics in the databases maintained by the international agencies. Thousands of trade workers in N.L. are retiring, and government is trying to recruit the next gen
Social Sharing Tradespeople like Jody Warren know his ilk are needed to keep Newfoundland and Labrador running. "If we don't have enough people in the trades, we're not going to be able to build this country's future," Warren said. Warren, a production manager at Steele Honda in St. John's, was on hand Wednesday as the provincial government announced a $300,000 campaign to bolster the future of the trades in Newfoundland and Labrador. The province estimates that over 6,000 construction and trade workers will retire in the next 10 years, and the investment is meant to encourage the next generation to look at the trades as a viable career path. "The work that has to be done doesn't care about your country of origin, your religion or colour, your skin or how you identify. That's not important," Warren said. "What's important is we need to build this country and keep it running." The $300,000 investment is a small one, says Immigration, Population, and Growth Minister Sarah Stoodley, noting the money will go toward supporting apprenticeships. "We need them to start now so that they can be up and running in five, 10, 15 years," Stoodley said. Employers who hire skilled apprentices will have 75 per cent of their wages covered by the provincial government — and youth apprenticeship programs are offered for high school students. Stoodley said the province needs people to help develop its infrastructure plans, such as the schools in Paradise, Portugal Cove-St. Philip's, and the replacement of St. Claire's Hospital. "We have a very aggressive infrastructure plan for the province ... we need skilled tradespeople to do that work," she said. Taylor Whiffen, a Grade 12 student at St. Kevin's High School, is a welding apprentice. Through the province's Youth Apprenticeship Summer Program, Whiffen got an early start to her career in the trades. "In the apprenticeship program, it was excellent. I was getting treated like I was not in high school, and I was getting treated like I was an actual apprentice coming out of college, and I would not expect anything else," she said. Whiffen will complete her trade in the fall after she graduates high school. Her favourite part of the job is plasma cutting. "I did a lot of that last summer, and it was very fun," Whiffen said. "Don't let anyone tell you that you can't when you're in the workshop."
