The Best New Hotel in the World Is in Denver, Says Esquire

Andy Cross/The Denver Post/TNS This week, Esquire unveiled its list of the best new hotels in the world, which reporters and editors culled 'the old-fashioned way,' they wrote—by visiting a slew of new properties in person over the past year. Andy Cross/The Denver Post/TNS Denver's nature-inspired Populus Hotel, which opened last October, was not only the sole local spot on the list but also earned the title of 'hotel of the year' for 2025. Rising 13 stories into the skyline, the Populus is immediately noticeable for its white exterior covered in oblong windows, designed to mimic the eyes of aspen trees. Andy Cross/The Denver Post/TNS Esquire's Jeff Gordinier gushed about the aesthetic, from the exterior with its arched windows designed to deter birds from flying into the glass to the sheets of reishi mushroom leather decorating the in-house bar, Pasque. The property was designed to be the country's first 'carbon positive' hotel, meaning it aims to make a positive environmental impact. It does so with amenities like a biodigester that turns food scraps into compost, using only renewable energy resources, and planting trees for each night a guest stays there, The Denver Post previously reported. That spirit happens to lead to a beautiful and restorative experience,' Esquire said. The Populus Hotel topped the publication's list of 42 hotels across the globe. Patio season is (finally) in sight, and Denver's dozens of rooftop bars are ready to deliver sun-soaked sips with a view. Yes, but: Not all rooftops are created equal. Our top spots strike a balance — swanky but not snooty. Here are five favorites: Stellar Jay (Populus Hotel, downtown) — This newcomer to the scene offers pristine views of Civic Center Park and the state Capitol. Now open for spring and summer, weather permitting. 54thirty (Le Méridien, downtown) — The city's highest open-air rooftop bar (5,430 feet up) is a year-round staple for craft cocktails and stunning skyline views. Rare Bird (Halcyon hotel, Cherry Creek) — It's known as one of the city's poshest perches, complete with private cabanas. When it reopens for the season (date TBD), the rooftop will debut a new wood-fired oven for pizzas, meatballs and more. El Five (LoHi) — This Mediterranean tapas bar holds a reputation as one of Denver's best date-night spots and has a small but mighty patio showcasing sweeping skyline views. Open year-round.
