Emergency declared before Alaska jet lands in Portland with damaged tire

An Alaska Airlines flight landed safely in Portland Monday morning after experiencing a tire failure during takeoff from Chicago, according to the airline. Flight 413 was en route from O'Hare International Airport to Portland International Airport when crews discovered the tire issue shortly after departure. The flight crew and maintenance teams assessed the situation and determined it was safe to continue the journey to Oregon. As a precaution, the pilots declared an emergency upon approach to Portland to ensure emergency crews would be ready to respond if needed, Alaska Airlines said. The plane landed without incident and was met by ground personnel and maintenance technicians for evaluation. The airline described the event as a 'rare occurrence' and emphasized that flight crews receive extensive training to handle such situations. 'We apologize for any concern this experience may have caused,' Alaska Airlines said in a statement. No injuries were reported, and the aircraft is undergoing inspection by maintenance crews at PDX.

Child with ultra-rare genetic disease gets Star Wars day sendoff at PDX

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A 5-year-old boy with a rare genetic disorder got an out-of-this world experience when characters from a galaxy far, far away gave him a proper Star Wars day sendoff at Portland International Airport Sunday morning. At 17 months old, Raiden Pham was diagnosed with UBA5, an ultra-rare progressive and life-threatening genetic disorder. It can lead to severe movement disability, cognitive impairment, seizures, as well as complications affecting breathing, vision and the gastrointestinal system. Portland chef honored as Asian Pacific leader alongside 'Wicked' director, Bruno Mars According to OHSU, only 40 children in the entire world have been officially diagnosed. In a gift made possible by Make-A-Wish Oregon, Raiden and his family received a trip to Disney Aulani in Hawaii. But as they were making their way to the gate, in-costume volunteers from and the Concordia Clan greeted him in a sendoff fit for a Jedi knight. Tommy Pham, Raiden's father, thanked the crowd for being a part of 'such a special moment.' 'We're built on hope,' he said. 'We're on this journey to fight against this rare disease, to raise awareness, to fundraise for research and make the impossible, possible. May the Force be with you.' In 2021, Raiden's family also launched the Raiden Science Foundation, which spearheads privately funded research efforts to develop the first-ever clinical trial for UBA5 gene therapy. Burglar stole iPhones, jewelry by sawing holes into Portland businesses, docs say

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A man accused of breaking into buildings and sawing holes into walls that were connected to local businesses now faces several burglary charges, according to the Multnomah County DA's office. The man was arraigned Friday, April 25 on multiple charges, including first-degree burglary, first-degree theft, aggravated theft, criminal mischief and aggravated identity theft. Alaska Airlines will 'invest more' in stops at Portland International Airport State prosecutors have asked for an upward departure in sentencing if he is found guilty, meaning they are seeking a harsher punishment due to the frequency of the burglaries. Authorities say the man has a history of 'breaking into vacant storefronts sharing walls with businesses he intended to target, then sawing through the interior wall separating the storefronts to gain access to valuable merchandise.' The impacted stores include the AT&T on Lombard Street, Jewelry Buyer, A1 Hawk Pawn Shop, and others. Stolen items ranged from iPhones, diamond earrings and tennis bracelets, officials said. Oregon, California, Florida churches detail suit against Trump admin's 'chilling' immigration practice When police searched the man's home in late February, they found a bag filled with 'numerous checks written out to a Sherwin Willams in Wilsonville, several credit card skimmers, a luggage bag filled with various financial documents and credit card items, a blue bag full of burglary tools,' as well as ammunition, holsters, and magazines. Oregon's ‘trade surplus' persists as tariffs begin to impact small businesses

PORTLAND, Ore. () — While researchers have highlighted the 'urban doom loop' hitting the City of Portland's economy, a new report highlights a more positive look at Oregon's trade industry. The Portland Metro Chamber's latest data show there were around $42 billion worth of goods and services exported from the state in 2022. This makes Oregon one of 11 states with a 'trade surplus' — meaning that it exports more than it imports to other locations. Alaska Airlines will 'invest more' in stops at Portland International Airport According to the report, approximately 88% of those exporters owned small or medium-sized businesses. The report also shows that 270,735 jobs — about one in eight — are connected to international trade. And exported goods and services made up about 10.3% of the state's Gross Domestic Product last year. Researchers noted that semiconductors have continued to be Oregon's top export, while Mexico has become the state's leading destination for exports. The value of exports into the country rose from $464 million in 2018 to $6.26 billion in 2024. But officials say recent and looming federal tariffs 'are raising red flags.' President Donald Trump's administration has already implemented a 145% tariff on imports from China. Tariffs on most global imports stand at 10%. 'We continue hearing from countless Oregonians whose businesses and livelihoods depend on access to global markets — from distillers in Hood River who import bottles from Asia to fill with their products, to small companies in Portland and farmers statewide who face retaliatory tariffs on the Oregon-grown goods they export,' Port of Portland Executive Director Curtis Robinhold said in a statement. 'Their stories underscore just how much international trade affects everyday Oregonians, their livelihoods and our state's economy, and why we must do everything possible to support it.' Trump executive order 'another attempt to bully Portland' Portland Metro Chamber's revealed that many local businesses, specifically in the metro area, have already been struggling. The 2025 State of the Economy noted that Portland's post-pandemic recovery has been slower than most major cities, leading to an 'urban doom loop' that causes small companies to shut down and tax revenues to decline. Alaska Airlines unveils new aircraft livery inspired by Disney theme-park attraction

There's magic in the air. Alaska Airlines has unveiled an 'enchanting' aircraft livery inspired by The Princess and the Frog and new log flume rides at Disneyland Park in California and Walt Disney World. The design, sported by a Boeing 737-800 with the tail number N596AS, is a 'celebration' of the classic Walt Disney animation starring Princess Tiana and the 'immersive' Tiana's Bayou Adventure attraction, which opened at Magic Kingdom and Disneyland in June and November 2024 respectively. The intricate graphics, which took artists more than 2,000 hours to paint, feature Disney characters Princess Tiana, Louis the Alligator splashing among water lilies on the bayou, Mama Odie and Prince Naveen on the winglets and a trail of fireflies stretching from the aircraft's nose to tail. Alaska Airlines unveiled the new design at Portland International Airport ahead of its maiden flight to Santa Ana, California, last week. The colorful aircraft, nicknamed Tiana's Bayou Adventure Flyer, is the carrier's ninth Disney-themed plane and its first to feature a Disney princess. Tiana's Bayou Adventure Flyer arrives in time for Disneyland Resort's 70th celebration, which begins on 16 May and runs until summer 2026. Passengers will be able to fly on the aircraft throughout Alaska's route network for 'the next several years', while junior fliers can look forward to a Tiana's Bayou Adventure snack pack onboard from this summer. 'For more than 25 years, Alaska Airlines and Disneyland Resort have collaborated to bring magic and happiness to the skies,' said Sybil Crum, vice president of marketing and commercial strategy at Disneyland Resort. 'As Disneyland Resort prepares to celebrate its 70th anniversary, this latest addition honours our legacy and looks ahead to a bright future with Princess Tiana leading the way.' Walt Disney World have increased for 2026. Prices for one-day tickets to the popular Florida attraction will rise next year by approximately $10 (£7.50). Visitor numbers to Disney attractions have yet to return to pre-pandemic levels, though Walt Disney World and Disneyland remain the two most-visited theme parks in the world, with around 34 million annual visitors between them.
