4.1 magnitude earthquake hits near Khemisset
An earthquake of moderate intensity, measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale, struck on Friday, May 23, 2025, at 12:16 PM in an area located 33 kilometers southwest of Khemisset, at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers.
Earlier, the Spanish National Geographic Institute (IGN) had reported an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.5 occurring 48 kilometers southwest of Khemisset, at a depth of 23 kilometers. This initial magnitude was later revised to 4.1. Other institutions, such as the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) and the RaspberryShake network, reported varying magnitudes ranging from 3.8 to 4.5, according to the VolcanoDiscovery website, which specializes in monitoring seismic and volcanic activity.
Residents felt mild tremors in several towns and villages, including Tiddas, Oulmes, Khemisset, Tifelt, and Ain Aouda, as well as in more distant areas such as New Salé, Temara, Rabat, and Kenitra.
