Joe Jonas and Aly & AJ Squash Decades-Long Beef in New TikTok
It took too long, it took too long, it took too long for Joe Jonas to (kinda) admit he was wrong. In a new TikTok destined to shake the world of several now-young adults who once watched Disney Channel religiously, Joe Jonas teamed up with Aly & AJ to mouth along the lyrics of one of the most seething songs seemingly inspired by a Jonas Brother: 'Potential Break Up Song.'
The video starts with Jonas holding up an iPhone to his ear before the camera pans to AJ Michalka and finally lands on Aly as the song's verse plays over the unlikely trio. Posted on his TikTok account, Jonas captioned the video by stating, 'OK but I'd never do that on your birthday' in reference to the 2007 track's opening lyrics, 'It took too long for you to call back/ And normally, I would just forget that/ Except for the fact it was my birthday, my stupid birthday.'

Why is this so Earth-shattering to younger Millennials and elder Gen Z? Well, back in the early aughts, when Disney Channel somehow had room for two sibling-fronted bands to dominate airtime between the Jonas Brothers and Aly & AJ, Joe Jonas and AJ Michalka began dating while on the same tour in 2005. Earlier this year, in an episode of Call Her Daddy, AJ revealed that Jonas was even her first kiss. By November of 2006, the pair had broken up. A few months later, Aly & AJ released 'Potential Break Up Song' as the first single for their Insomniac LP. The song quickly became a pop rock breakup anthem and reached Number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100.
It was speculated that Jonas was the subject of 'Potential Break Up Song' as the shitty boyfriend who committed the cardinal relationship sin of forgetting his girlfriend's birthday. But in 2020, Aly & AJ told Business Insider that the track 'wasn't connected to any particular person' after they had tweeted that the song 'Flattery' was actually about the JoBro. But why else would AJ mail Jonas a piece of her birthday cake?
Now, it seems Jonas and Aly & AJ are all owning up to what many have known all along: Jonas inspired the iconic song, if partially. The trio may also be hinting at a possible collaboration. After all, Jonas' second solo album, Music for People Who Believe in Love is out this Friday.
Some fans used the TikTok as an excuse to bring up more of Jonas' morally questionable phone behavior from his teens, like that time Taylor Swift alleged the JoBro had broken up with her over the phone. In one comment, a TikTok user wrote, 'Great AJ is healed, love that for her. Now let's address that 27-second phone call Joseph.'
