New $60 million donation to fund patient tower at St. Joseph's Health Centre
A record-breaking $60 million donation to St. Joseph's Health Centre in Toronto's west end will go towards building a new patient tower, the hospital says.
The donation, by Peter Gilgan, founder and CEO of Mattamy Asset Management, is the largest in the centre's history, according to a news release from the hospital.
"This historic and generous donation by Peter Gilgan will help further that record, serving more patients than ever before and protecting Ontario's health-care system for generations to come," Ontario Premier Doug Ford said in a statement.
The new patient tower will increase emergency and surgical capacity, expand mental health services and "open doors to innovation, including advancements in artificial intelligence," the hospital said.
Gilgan and his six siblings were born at St. Joseph's Health Centre, the hospital said. With these latest funds, he has now donated over $70 million to the health centre.
"This gift is deeply personal," Gilgan said in a statement. "I'm proud to support this transformation so St. Joe's can continue caring for families like mine for the next century."
