Will the Northeast catch a rain break in time for Mother's Day?

A storm clearing out of the Northeast this weekend will pave the way for sunshine and seasonable spring temperatures just in time to celebrate moms and mother figures alike on Sunday. "A zone of high pressure over the Northeast will set the stage for a sunny and comfortable Mother's Day," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dan Pydynowski said. Rain will linger across New England on Saturday as drier air noses southward into the mid-Atlantic. By Sunday, the entire region will be largely free of cloud cover and wet conditions. "Many areas across the interior of New England, New York state and northern Pennsylvania will start off chilly on Sunday morning with temperatures in the 30s F, so Mom may need a jacket if you are taking her out to breakfast," Pydynowski said. Sensitive plants or flowers may need to be covered or brought indoors on Saturday and Sunday nights to prevent possible damage. "By Sunday afternoon, plenty of sunshine will boost temperatures into the 60s and 70s across much of the Northeast, making for great conditions for an afternoon cookout or picnic," Pydynowski the app? Unlock AccuWeather Alerts™ with Premium+ Washington, D.C., Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and New York City are expected to string together three consecutive dry days from Saturday through Monday, a welcome reprieve following the daily bouts of rain during the first full week of May. The weather observation site in Central Park has recorded 2.10 inches of rain as of May 8, which is 208% of the month-to-date historical average rainfall. "The consecutive dry days in these areas will give plenty of flexibility for catching up on lawn maintenance, outdoor exercise, yard sales, college graduations and sports-related activities," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said. Changes will be on the horizon heading into the middle of next week as a storm drenching the Southeast through the weekend crawls northward Tuesday into Wednesday. "Moisture will move across parts of the Midwest, mid-Atlantic and Northeast, resulting in increased rain chances," Pydynowski said. The slow-moving nature of the storm and light winds in the atmosphere can result in downpours that sit over the same area for several hours, increasing the risk of localized flooding. A few stronger thunderstorms are also possible along the Southeast coast, perhaps as far north as the Delmarva Peninsula. Want next-level safety, ad-free? Grok limits Ghibli-style AI image generation as users hit paywall, prompting push for X Premium amid growing demand

xAI's Grok chatbot, which recently became a viral tool for generating Studio Ghibli-style AI images, is now issuing usage limit errors to some users. Many who attempted to create 'Ghiblified' images through the Grok tab on X (formerly Twitter) encountered paywalls, urging them to subscribe to X Premium or Premium+ to access the feature. This unexpected restriction has sparked frustration among users, particularly since some reported the error during their first attempt at image generation. Despite the issue on the X platform, users noted that Grok's dedicated app and website continued to process the same prompts without issue, suggesting that the limitations may be tied specifically to the X integration. The surge in popularity for Ghibli-style AI art followed OpenAI's rollout of native image generation in GPT-4o, leading to widespread sharing of whimsical, anime-inspired visuals across social media platforms. Public figures, including Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and even world leaders, joined the trend, propelling demand even higher. However, the increased usage may be straining Grok's resources. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously admitted that the trend was "melting" the company's GPUs. A similar strain could now be affecting xAI, especially after its high-profile $33 billion acquisition of X. Elon Musk stated, 'xAI and X's futures are intertwined,' highlighting the strategic alignment of data, compute power, and user base. The recent limitation, however, could indicate growing pains as the company scales its AI capabilities. Grok's Ghibli image generator had been a free alternative to ChatGPT's paywalled tool, but the introduction of a paywall may signal a shift toward monetising viral AI features.

Elon Musk's X looking for cash from investors

Elon Musk's social media platform X is in talks with investors over raising cash that would value the site at 44 billion dollars (£34.9 billion), according to reports. The valuation is the same price Mr Musk paid for the platform in 2022, and would suggest a turn in fortunes for the company, which has seen advertisers and users step away following a string of controversies under Mr Musk's ownership. According to a report from Bloomberg News, the talks over the financing round are still ongoing and the details could change, and the amount of cash looking to be raised has not been confirmed. Since taking over X in 2022, Mr Musk has changed the site's name from Twitter, dismissed the majority of its staff, dismantled its verified accounts system and replaced it with paid subscriptions, and rowed back on content moderation. This has led to rival social media platforms such as Bluesky reporting spikes in their own user numbers. As a result, many industry experts had suggested X's estimated value had slumped well below the 44 billion dollars Mr Musk paid to acquire the platform in late 2022. However, the billionaire's close proximity to US President Donald Trump and his role as a central figure advising the new administration has seen investors begin to bet that this relationship will likely be positive for Mr Musk's other businesses over time. Shares in his electric car firm Tesla have risen around 40% since Mr Trump's election, and there have also been reports that his AI start-up, xAI, is in talks over investor funding that would value it at 75 billion dollars (£59.4 billion). On Monday, xAI unveiled its latest AI model, Grok 3, which Mr Musk claimed was now superior to rival OpenAI's ChatGPT and was the 'smartest AI on Earth'.
