Searches for Madeleine McCann to continue in Portugal
SEARCHES FOR MADELEINE are to resume in Portugal today, near where the little girl was last seen in 2007. Yesterday, fresh searches for Madeleine began, as teams drained a well and cleared areas of dense vegetation near abandoned buildings in the countryside, a few miles from Praia da Luz. Madeleine, then aged three, vanished while on holiday with her family in the Algarve resort, after her parents went out to dinner and left her sleeping in a room with her toddler twin siblings. German investigators and Portuguese police officers, and firefighters took part in the searches on Tuesday, as teams used strimmers, shovels and chainsaws to clear the undergrowth and debris around an abandoned building, and drained a well using a yellow hose. About a dozen officers focused on one abandoned building where digging was taking place, while another member of the search team cleared large rocks. The Sun reported that investigators are also planning to use radar equipment that can scan beneath the ground. It has been variously reported that teams will look where trenches were dug near the resort at the time of Madeleine's disappearance, at wells, ruins and water tanks, and that there are plans to examine 21 pieces of land. Advertisement The search is being carried out at the request of the German federal police, as they look for evidence that could implicate prime suspect Christian Brueckner, who is in prison for raping a 72-year-old woman in Praia da Luz in 2005. He is due to be released from jail in September if no further charges are brought. In October last year, Brueckner was cleared by a German court of unrelated sexual offences, alleged to have taken place in Portugal between 2000 and 2017. About 30 German police, including forensic experts, are expected to take part in the search, along with Portuguese officers, which is expected to last until Friday. Press Association Images Press Association Images The UK Metropolitan Police said they were aware of the operation, but that British officers would not be present. German investigators and Portuguese officers last carried out searches in 2023, near the Barragem do Arade reservoir, about 30 miles from Praia da Luz. Brueckner, who spent time in the area between 2000 and 2017, had photographs and videos of himself near the reservoir. British police were later given permission to examine scrubland near where she vanished in 2014. Last month Madeleine's family, who are from Rothley in Leicestershire in the UK, marked the 18th anniversary of her disappearance, describing her as 'beautiful and unique', before her 22nd birthday, and vowed to continue the search. A statement from her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, and the family said: 'The years appear to be passing even more quickly and whilst we have no significant news to share, our determination to 'leave no stone unturned' is unwavering. 'We will do our utmost to achieve this.' In April, ministers in the UK approved more than £100,000 in additional funding for Scotland Yard detectives investigating Madeleine's disappearance.

Serial killer Rose West's son set to marry at one of Wales' most famous hotels
Serial killer Rose West's son set to marry at one of Wales' most famous hotels Stephen West grew up in the infamous 'house of horrors' where his dad was responsible for at least 12 murders over two decades, often with Rose's help Rose West was imprisoned for life (Image: PA Archive/Press Association Images ) The son of notorious serial killer Rose West is set to marry his fiancé Emma Bradley in August at the Celtic Manor hotel in Newport. Stephen West and his soon-to-be wife Emma have also recently welcomed their new daughter Eden into the world. Rose West, 71, is serving a life sentence and will not meet her granddaughter after Stephen severed ties with his mother. He and former Glamour model Emma have since forged a relationship. Stephen's father, Fred West, was a serial killer responsible for at least 12 murders over two decades, often with the help of Rose, before his death in prison in 1995. Never miss a Newport story by subscribing to our newsletter here . Stephen, who spent his childhood in the infamous 'house of horrors' in Gloucester, previously acknowledged a dark similarity to his father, saying: "There's a bit of my dad in me." Rose West, having nearly completed three decades in jail, reportedly gave up on appealing her conviction in 2001 and seems to accept her fate of dying in prison. Emma, now a qualified nurse at Gloucester Royal Hospital, has two daughters from a previous relationship. Article continues below Following news of Rose's deteriorating health and her transfer to a disability-adapted cell in prison "because she can barely walk", Emma revealed that both she and her partner were oblivious to the situation as they had severed ties. She did, however, acknowledge that she and Stephen, who live together in Abbeymead, Gloucester, watched the recent Netflix series, Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story. Emma said her fiancé "doesn't want to say anything because his main priority is the little ones." She added: "He is adamant, at this time of his life he's got a young family to protect." Stephen, 51, now a grandfather, has been previously married twice and has a total of eight children. The wedding will be Stephen West's third marriage (Image: PA ) A source recently shed light on Rose's daily life in prison. Speaking to The Sun, they said: "She never really leaves the wing she's held on and is escorted all the time by prison officers if she goes anywhere. Sometimes she sits in the communal areas on her own. "No-one talks to her because everyone knows who she is and what she did, even if she has changed her name. When I was there, she tried to make friends with the other women and gave them gifts, like vapes, but she was rejected. She enjoys watching nature documentaries on the TV in her cell, particularly those about birds." In an attempt to dissociate from her heinous past, West reportedly spent £36 to legally alter her identity to Jennifer Jones. It's believed she executed the name change by deed poll in December, 2024, confiding to acquaintances that it signified her journey forward. Fred and Rose West (Image: ) Yet, in HMP New Hall near Wakefield in West Yorkshire, her true identity remains common knowledge. She is claimed to frequently eat tomato soup by herself in her cell for breakfast. She then spends the bulk of her day within her cell, knitting and watching television due to her limited mobility. West is currently detained in a specialised section of New Hall called Rivendell House, where 30 inmates are each provided with an en-suite cell and a laptop. This laptop can be used to order food, and the shared spaces are reportedly "more inviting" than other areas of the prison, as noted in inspection reports. Article continues below

The man famed forever for the side-splitting 'It's a man actually, Derek' clip will put down his mic for the final time at Wolverhampton on July 22. Photo!' calls, began commentating at the age of 15. Now, after making history as the youngest caller of the Grand National in 1973, he believes the time is right to walk away aged 74. He reckons he is the oldest sports commentator in the world. The Guinness World Records might have something to say about that, as they last year listed 86-year-old Turkish caller Orhan Ayhan as the oldest. Either way, it's been a hell of a stint for fan favourite Tommo. A natural behind the mic with a flair for the dramatic, Thompson tried his hand as a jockey and memorably denied King Charles his only win as a jockey - in a charity Flat race at Plumpton in 1980. But he was to find his true calling in the booth rather than on horseback. He made his debut on the mic as a fresh-faced teen calling point-to-point meetings. The king of the one liners was quickly snapped up by the BBC, where he was part of their National coverage, before going to ITV and then Channel 4. There, he was a popular figure in their formidable line-up featuring the likes of the late John McCririck and Alastair Down - a period punters often refer to as the golden age of racing. In later years he became known to many as the archetypal Alan Partridge figure, thanks in part to toe-curling lines in promotional videos, including the infamous: "Are you well? I thought you were!" Fortunately, Tommo won't be turning his back on racing altogether. The commentary icon, who announced his retirement at the end of last year, will keep a hand in the game with some horses. And among them is 66-1 Redcar winner Cheerleader, the first to carry his colours in around 40 years. The three-year-old filly Tommo owns with wife Caroline flew home in a 5f contest under Joanna Mason. She hadn't got up to much under former trainer Karl Burke but showed bundles of improvement for Tina Jackson. A beaming Tommo couldn't stand still after the win and said: "Tina, who is my brother's partner, she is one of the hottest trainers in the UK at the moment. "It's my wife Caroline, she'll be watching this, she bought the horse, gave it six months off, gave it to Tina, gently brought her along… there will be tears streaming down her face. "Well done, darling." Well done, indeed - and to you, Tommo, for an unforgettable career in racing. Clarkson, May and Hammond to star in four new episodes of The Grand Tour

They then moved over to Prime Video to host The Grand Tour until the series came to an end last year. One last special entitled One For The Road saw the three friends travel to Zimbabwe and Botswana before calling it a day after 22 years as a Grand Tour trio will feature in the new episodes.
