Isro successfully conducts third hot test of semicryogenic engine

According to Isro, the test, conducted on May 28, was aimed at validating the engine's ignition and start-up sequence while optimising the process for integrated engine performance Press Trust of India Bengaluru The Indian Space Research Organisation on Monday achieved a significant milestone with the successful completion of the third hot test of the Power Head Test Article (PHTA) at the Isro Propulsion Complex in Mahendragiri, Tamil Nadu. The test is part of a crucial series of evaluations to validate the performance of India's upcoming semicryogenic engine, Isro said. This marks the third in a series of hot tests undertaken by Isro for the PHTA. According to Isro, the test, conducted on May 28, was aimed at validating the engine's ignition and start-up sequence while optimising the process for integrated engine performance. During the three-second trial, the engine was ignited successfully and operated up to 60 per cent of its rated power level, exhibiting stable and controlled performance throughout. Isro began this series of performance evaluations in March 2025, focusing on critical components such as low- and high-pressure turbo-pumps, the pre-burner, start-up system, and various control mechanisms. The first test, conducted on March 28, 2025, confirmed smooth ignition and bootstrap operation during a 2.5-second run. The second test, carried out on April 24, focused on the start transient build-up and validated the ignition sequence over a 3.5-second duration. The Semi-Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (SC120), powered by the 2000 kN-class SE2000 engine, is being developed to replace the current liquid core stage (L110) of the LVM3 launch vehicle towards enhancing its payload capability, Isro said.

The rainfall, including thunderstorms and gales, was observed across the state during the 2025 pre-monsoon period (March 1 to May 31), with all districts receiving very high and above normal rainfall, the statement said. During the period from April 1 to May 31, 48 people were killed due to lightning, nine due to falling of trees, five due to house collapse, four due to drowning, four due to landslide and one due to electrocution, it added. A total of 71 lives were lost and an emergency compensation of Rs 5 lakh has been distributed to the heirs of the deceased, the statement said. It said that 702 animal losses occurred, out of which compensation has already been distributed to the concerned in 698 animal loss cases. (Large animals - 225 and small animals - 477). The statement said that 2,068 houses have reportedly been damaged, out of which compensation has already been distributed to 1,926 houses. (fully damaged - 75 and partial damage - 1993). A total of 15,378.32 hectares of crops have been damaged, (agricultural crops - 11915.66 hectares and horticulture - 3462.66 hectares), said officials, adding that crop damage details have been provided to be entered in the compensation software and the compensation payment process is in progress. As per the revised 2025 Southwest Monsoon Forecast released by the India Meteorological Department on May 27, there is a possibility of above normal rainfall across the state during the 2025 Southwest Monsoon (June-September) period and except for a few districts in the southern interior, all the remaining districts are likely to receive normal and above normal rainfall in June. There are a total of five NDRF teams in the state, out of which four teams have already been deployed, one each for Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts for emergency response during the monsoon season. Normal life disrupted as rains continue to pound Bengaluru, toll rises to 5

Residents complained that the civic agencies were least bothered about the sufferings of people residing in Sai Layout Press Trust of India Bengaluru Heavy downpour in Bengaluru for the past 36 hours threw life out of gear here on Tuesday as well. People were seen walking through knee-deep water and traffic jams were reported in many places. The rain-related toll went up to five in the state, officials said. Sai Layout in the city continued to resemble an island due to the torrential rains. Ground floor of the houses here were half-submerged and people were unable to come out. About 150 people were rescued and shifted to safe locations on Monday, authorities said. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMB) had arranged food and water for people in Sai Layout. Residents complained that the civic agencies were least bothered about the sufferings of people residing in Sai Layout. An orphanage in Hennur in the city also bore the brunt of the downpour. The Fire and Rescue Department along with Disaster Response Force rescued the people in the orphanage as the place was filled with water. Commuters had a harrowing time wading through the knee-deep water in many places, including near Manyata Tech Park, which houses offices of many multinational companies, and Silk Board Junction. Many new potholes emerged in the city roads posing threat to motorists. Due to waterlogging, vehicles were stranded, leading to long traffic jams in many parts of the city. Two people, including a 12-year-old, were electrocuted while trying to drain rainwater that had entered an apartment in the city, police said on Tuesday. According to Mico Layout Police, Manmohan Kamath (63), a resident of Madhuvan Apartment in NS Palya near BTM 2nd Stage, had tried to use a motorised pump to clear water out of his house on Monday evening. "When he connected the pump to a socket, there was a short circuit, leading to his electrocution," a police officer involved in the investigation said. Dinesh (12), son of a Nepalese man employed at the apartment complex, who was standing near Kamath, was also electrocuted, police added. The two were declared dead by doctors at a hospital. Unnatural Death Reports (UDRs) will be registered in both cases, the Station Head Officer confirmed. Earlier on Monday, Sasikala (35) died when a compound wall fell on her while she was sweeping at a company within the limits of Mahadevapura Police Station. Two people died of lightning in Raichur and Karwar, officials said. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru has received about 30 mm rain in the last 24 hours. The city had recorded 105 mm rain on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday morning. Rains are pounding several parts of Karnataka, especially south Karnataka, coastal and Malnad region. Mangaluru, the district headquarter town of Dakshina Kannada, recorded 90 mm rain in the last 24 hours. The IMD has issued an orange alert for Bengaluru and a yellow alert at various places across Karnataka on Tuesday. An orange alert means very heavy rain of 11 cm to 20 cm, and a yellow alert means heavy rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm. IMD Bengaluru Centre Director N Puviarasu said they have issued an orange alert for Bengaluru for the impact 8 cm to 10 cm that will likely affect the big city. "The amount of rainfall we are receiving is nothing for rural areas. But because cities like Bengaluru are concretised mostly, and thus blocking the outlets for water drainage, we have issued an orange alert so that authorities can prepare accordingly," he said. According to the IMD statement, areas likely to be affected today are Bagalkot, Bangalore Urban, Bangalore Rural, Belgaum, Chikkaballapura, Dharwad, Gadag, Kolar, Koppal, Vijayanagara districts. A yellow alert has been sounded in Uttar Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Dharwad, Bengaluru Rural and Bengaluru Urban districts. The IMD has predicted light to moderate rains and thundershowers accompanied by lightning and gusty wind at isolated places in above districts in next 24 hours. It has appealed to people to stay indoors and avoid travelling. "Take safe shelters. Do not take shelter under trees. Unplug electrical/electronic appliances immediately. Get out of water bodies immediately. Keep away from all the objects that conduct electricity," the bulletin read.

If India gets 10 Abdul Kalams, we can nail R&D: Former DRDO scientist

Bengaluru-based Ramarao was part of the missile-building team put together by India's "Missile Man" and former President A P J Abdul Kalam Press Trust of India Bengaluru If India has 10 Abdul Kalams, we can really bring about a change in the way we approach research and development, said former DRDO scientist Prahlada Ramarao on Sunday. Bengaluru-based Ramarao was part of the missile-building team put together by India's "Missile Man" and former President A P J Abdul Kalam. The indigenous surface-to-air missile system, famously called Akash, that he and his team worked on for nearly 15 years, since 1983, is having its moment of glory, as it withstood the onslaught of Pakistani missiles and drones, especially on May 8 and 9. "The biggest difficulty for India is that we are individually good, but cannot work together as a team. Kalam was very good at addressing this. He taught me how to bring the energy of individuals synergistically to achieve a purpose. That is why I feel, if we have 10 Kalams, India will truly lead," Ramarao told PTI. Ramarao said he was only 34 years old when he was made the project director for the surface-to-air missile project, originally called SAM X and later renamed as Akash system. "To make it happen, we had to make hardware, software prototypes, and then test it out. When it didn't work, go back, review the design, change the design and so it went on for two, three iterations. Only after 15 years, we could show that to the reluctant Army, who never really believed we could pull this off," he said. The scientist said India is now in a better place, and the young scientists today are better equipped to arm India with indigenous innovations. "I am sure if you want to make another missile system, it will take maybe five years because the foundation has been laid," Ramarao said. He also pointed out that the capability of Indian manufacturers too has grown tremendously. "Earlier, say around 1984-85, Indian industries were doing what is called build to print. Then we moved on to build to design and then build to concept. Now, Indian industries are so smart that they can build, if you just give a concept," he said. Although he admitted that India has matured in the last 25 years when it comes to guided missiles and rockets, it still has a long way to go to claim absolute dominion in that. Just as we improved, the technology capability of all our adversaries too have improved, he pointed out. "I interact with a number of young students. They are highly competent and very, very ambitious. They want to do something different, something fantastic. All they need now is direction and support," Ramarao said. The scientist said it is now up to the policymakers to harness this huge resource for the good of the country. "We certainly need someone like Kalam, who managed to inspire a motley team like ours, young and inexperienced, to pull off the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme, one of India's ambitious project, that is serving India well even today," Ramarao said.
