The World Social Forum of Intersections in Montreal from May 29 to June 1
From May 29 to June 1, 2025, Montreal will host the very first edition of the World Social Forum of Intersections (WSIF), a major event that will bring together more than 400 groups from Quebec and around the world and nearly 3,000 participants in a space that allows for the sharing of perspectives, knowledge, and interactions to foster systemic change. Together, they will take part in dozens of activities-workshops, conferences, public forums, artistic performances-inviting the convergence of hope and action on the major issues of our time: social justice, climate, equality, democracy, human rights, and many others. The main objective of the World Social Forum of Intersections is to encourage systemic changes, thanks to the intersections of perspectives, knowledge and hopes. It thus aims to break down barriers between action environments, cultures and practices, while creating intergenerational and transnational connections, from the local to the global. The WSIF 2025 is part of the dynamics of the World Social Forum (WSF) , the largest gathering of global civil society created in 2001 in Brazil. The latter brings together, at each edition, thousands of participants around hundreds of activities (workshops, conferences, artistic performances, etc.) focused on various themes such as social development, the solidarity economy, human rights and the environment. The 2025 FSMI is an important moment of mobilization for the next World Social Forum which will take place in Cotonou, Benin, in January 2026. In an era marked by growing extremism, exacerbated social inequalities and an unprecedented ecological crisis, the FSMI offers a space for articulation . It aims to bring together those who are taking action to build sustainable and supportive alternatives. We need places to exchange perspectives, share knowledge, and strengthen our actions. The FSMI is a call for hope and solidarity, to unite the strength of local initiatives with the ambition of essential global change. Gaza: Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) welcomes statement by Canada
Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) welcomes the joint statement by Canada, the United Kingdom and France threatening "concrete actions" in response to Israel's genocide in Gaza. For the first time, the three leaders described Israel's latest military escalation in Gaza as "wholly disproportionate," warned that denying aid to Gaza "risks" breaching international law, and pledged that they "will not stand by while the Netanyahu Government pursues these egregious actions." CJPME urges Prime Minister Mark Carney to follow through with immediate sanctions, noting that the threshold for action has long been surpassed. For the first time since the start of the genocide, Canada is talking about 'concrete actions' to stop Israel's war crimes. Canada's words are starting to reflect the urgency of the moment. This should have been Canada's response in October 2023, when Israel's genocidal intent was plain to see," said Michael Bueckert, Acting President of CJPME. "Carney must now prove that these are not empty threats. If Canada's word is to be taken seriously, we must move to sanction Israel immediately, added Bueckert. CJPME argues that statements alone have failed to restrain Israel's illegal actions in the occupied Palestinian territory or to dissuade Israeli leaders from their goals of conquering Gaza and ethnically cleansing Palestine. Just yesterday, Israeli Finance Minister boasted publicly: We are disassembling Gaza, and leaving it as piles of rubble, with total destruction [which has] no precedent globally. And the world isn't stopping us." Israel's Prime Minister Netanyahu has already rejected the statement from Canada, claiming that Israel will not stop "until total victory is achieved. Israel has already dismissed Canada's demands. Gaza cannot wait another minute. Carney must follow through and enact sanctions without delay, said Bueckert. While Carney has not specified which policy measures he is contemplating, CJPME believes that an adequate response to genocide and manufactured famine in Gaza must include the following at a minimum: ________________________________ Source: Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) Source: Pressenza
