Antron Brown Sees NHRA Allowing Drivers to Compete in Multiple Pro Classes at Same Event
Six-time Pro Stock champion Erica Enders triggers talk about pro racers being allowed to compete in two different classes at the same event. The NHRA has not made any official change in the rule—still one class per event. Former Pro Stock Motorcycle and now Top Fuel owner-driver Antron Brown predicts the sanctioning body will allow that. Erica Enders was open about the fact she and her Elite Motorsports team owner Richard Freeman had 'started working with NHRA on planning to be able to drive' in two pro classes at the same event. She indicated that the sticking point for the sanctioning body was live-TV-related. She had toyed with the idea of adding a Funny Car to her agenda and later considered a Top Fuel dragster. Because Funny Car and Pro Stock usually run back-to-back, Enders said, NHRA officials told her, 'If you run the dragster and you run Pro Stock, we can figure it out.'That makes Antron Brown's assertions from a preseason conversation at Phoenix with Autoweek convincing. The three-time Top Fuel champion claimed that one day he will be driving a Pro Stock car as well as his dragster and maybe even a dragster and a Pro Mod. 'Or maybe,' Brown said, 'one day I'd be in a marathon of racing. I would love to do a Pro Stock bike, Pro Stock car, Funny Car, and Top Fuel car' in a single event. Brown, the 16-time Pro Stock Motorcycle winner who moved to Top Fuel in 2008, said, 'You know how I got into this sport? I got into this sport because my dad was a super-fan of Pro Stock car. I knew every Pro Stock car driver and always wanted to drive a Pro Stock car and never got to drive one. Isn't that crazy? "Super-fan of Pro Stock car from the Lee Shepherd days to Bob Glidden to Warren Johnson, all them fighting each other. The Jerry Ekmans were out there. I knew all the names of Pro Stock car. I knew every single one: Scott Geoffrion and the Wayne County Boys, all of them: Daryl Alderman. I remember all the names back in the day of how they raced and what they do... Mark Pawuk, 'The Cowboy'... all the names that made Pro Stock car what it is.' And he said he can race a Pro Stock car, too: 'I know how to make it happen. I can click the gears and everything.'And he said he's convinced the NHRA will approve multi-pro-category racing.'I'm going to do it one day. I've been talking to 'em,' Brown said. 'They were talking about it for Erica, where they're not going to wait for you [if she competed in classes that run back-to-back]. But that's a new stipulation that... you could do two of those classes, but they won't let you do two fuel classes and you can't do two stock classes.' Sportsman racers are permitted to compete in multiple categories at the same NHRA has not announced a change in its current rule that would please, among others, Top Fuel owner-driver Mike Salinas, who is itching to race in several pro classes at the same said, 'We put that on the back burner after' further thought. 'I'm not saying we're not or we won't, but now's not the time.'Brown might feel NHRA will resume competition this weekend with the Four-Wide Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway,

NHRA Gatornationals Results: Reigning Champs Antron Brown, Gaige Herrera Strike First
After a shaky start Sunday at the NHRA Amalie Oil Gatornationals and before another rainstorm was bearing down on Florida's Gainesville Raceway, four-time and current Top Fuel champion Antron Brown continued his winning ways. He defeated Shawn Langdon in the quickest side-by-side match of the day (3.673 seconds on the 1,000-foot course at 333.99 mph to 3.684, 332.67). The former Pro Stock Bike racer counted this 81st overall victory and 65th in Top Fuel at the season-opener as "a true blessing," because, he said that in the offseason, "all these teams did their homework." It was Brown's 149th final-round appearance. Funny Car team owner Chad Green earned his second victory ran away from tire-smoking three-time series champion Ron Capps in the final to join Dallas Glenn (Pro Stock) and Gaige Herrera (Pro Stock Motorcycle) in the winners circle. The Pro Stock showdown was a rematch of last November's Finals in which Greg Anderson beat his KB Titan Racing teammate Glenn by two-thousandths of a second to record his fifth championship. "This is payback," Glenn, 34, said of his 64-year-old mentor after posting his 14th victory. "Greg's one who's had my number. Even though he's an old guy, he's still got it." The Pro Stock Motorcycle class, always with at least a little melodrama, had some in the classic final-round match. Herrera, who entered as the class champion for the past two seasons, patiently waited for opponent and keenest rival Matt Smith to get his motor to fire. Herrera won with a one-thousandth-of-a-second margin over the six-time champion. Herrera's Vance & Hines crew chief, Andrew Hines, said of Smith, "We took the high road. But the ready line is back there. He should've had his stuff ready." So despite an extensive rain interruption, a Top Fuel wreck, significant problems with the racing surface, a facility-wide power outage, and a FOX Sports drone that crashed into the tower and plunged three stories to the pavement in pieces - all in the first round - the season's first race is in the books. The series heads west for races later this month at Phoenix and Pomona, Calif. NHRA Gatornationals Friday Qualifying: No catching Antron Brown, Jack Beckman
Reigning Top Fuel world champion Antron Brown started his 2025 with the provisional No. 1 qualifier position at Gainesville Raceway, taking the top spot on Friday at the 56th Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway. Jack Beckman (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Gaige Herrera (Pro Stock Motorcycle) are also the provisional No. 1 qualifiers at the first of 20 races during the 2025 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season. Selections were also made for the opening round of the big-money Right Trailers Top Fuel All-Star Callout bonus race, which takes place on Saturday. Top seed Steve Torrence selected Tony Stewart as his opening-round opponent, while Doug Kalitta picked Clay Millican for his first-round matchup. Shawn Langdon and defending world champion Brown will face off, while the final first-round pair features Justin Ashley and Brittany Force. Brown went 3.685-seconds at 334.24 mph in his 11,000-horsepower Matco Tools dragster during the second session, starting the year strong after earning his fourth world championship in 2024. If Friday's run under the lights holds, the 80-time event winner would pick up his 51st career No. 1 qualifier. 'We weren't trying to go out there and kill it, but we knew the track could hold anywhere in the mid-60 range, and we just wanted to be in the top half the field,' Brown said. 'Lo and behold, it ran really strong out the back door. It was smooth all the way down, it just went straight as an arrow and I got to the finish line." Tripp Tatum also went 3.685 at a slower 326.58 to take the second spot and Langdon is third after going 3.690 at 335.23. Funny Car's Jack Beckman was the quickest in both sessions on Friday, slipping past Bob Tasca III under the lights with a stellar run of 3.832 at 334.65 in his 11,000-horsepower PEAK Chevrolet Camaro SS. Named the full-time driver for John Force during the 2025 campaign, Beckman picked up where he left off last year, following his NHRA Finals victory with a pair of terrific runs on Friday. 'When the season ended last year, I wasn't sure if I'd be back. I thought I'd get the nod but I wasn't sure,' Beckman said. 'There is a part of me that expected to see someone run 3.81 but I'm happy with a 3.83. We were low of both sessions in completely different conditions. 'I can't put into words how awesome it is to be strapped into John Force's Funny Car and have John walk by and give you a thumbs up before they fire up. I am unbelievably lucky.' Tasca was also strong on Friday, going 3.833 at 333.82 and Capps' 3.857 at 335.73 puts him third after the first day of qualifying. In Pro Stock, Greg Anderson made NHRA history in an unbelievable performance on Friday under the lights at Gainesville Raceway, going 6.443 in his Chevrolet Camaro to set the Pro Stock world record. It's the quickest pass in Pro Stock history and made for a surreal moment for the reigning world champion. He ended the 2024 season with a winner-take-all pass to get the championship in Pomona and then started the first day of qualifying at the Gatornationals with a historic performance, putting Anderson in line for his 133rd No. 1 qualifier. This one will be remembered for a while, as the six-time champ set a new gold standard in the category. 'This is beyond cool and that's because I didn't expect it,' Anderson said. 'I watched my team cars with Deric Kramer and Eric Latino run 6.46 ahead of me and I started to think maybe we could run 6.45, but I surpassed them both. 'It feels good to be back. I live for runs like this and I love Gainesville. I came here with my dad when I was 10-12 years old, and I've loved this place ever since. Coming to Gainesville this the first race of the year and you always wonder how you stack up. So far it's been successful.' Deric Kramer took the second spot after a career-best run of 6.463 at 212.23 and Dallas Glenn is right behind after going 6.466 at 212.56. Gaige Herrera's domination at Gainesville Raceway continued on Friday, as the back-to-back world champion took over the top spot during the second session on his RevZilla/Mission Foods/Vance & Hines Suzuki with a run of 6.670 at 202.97. Herrera has rolled to Gatornationals wins at the last two events at the legendary facility and appears poised to try and make it three in a row. Herrera hasn't let up after two straight championships, continuing to post one standout run after another. If it holds, it would be Herrera's 24th No. 1 qualifier since the start of the 2023 campaign. 'I have a lot of fun racing in Gainesville. I got my first win here two years ago in my debut with the Vance & Hines team and I've got a lot of great memories here,' Herrera said. 'Before that run, Andrew [Hines, crew chief] said 'This is all we've got. I hope it sticks.' It did and we made a nice run. 'I think you'll see me and Matt [Smith] go back and forth all season and it won't just be us. You can see that Angie [Smith] was close and Richard [Gadson] was close. We've got a lot of good bikes out here and that includes some new guys.' Matt Smith is currently second with a pass of 6.679 at 203.49 and Angie Smith is third after going 6.709 at 201.01. Friday's results after the first two of four rounds of qualifying for the 56th annual AMALIE Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway, first of 20 events in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series.
