Towne Acres School Resource Officer transitions to SVU investigator role
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Officer Erik Hilton is saying goodbye to Towne Acres Elementary School for a new role with the Special Victims Unit.
After almost seven years of service as a School Resource Officer (SRO), Hilton will now be an SVU investigator with the Johnson City Police Department (JCPD).
'This move allows me to continue being an advocate and a voice for children, just in a different way,' Hilton said in a news release. 'I've always been passionate about protecting and guiding young people, and now, I can do that in a way that brings justice and support to those who need it most.'

In total, Hilton has been an SRO for 17 years and served with the JCPD for 27. He's played a pivotal role in programs like D.A.R.E, Project Alert, Police Explorers and more, the JCPD stated.
'My favorite part of the day was easy – the morning car line,' Hilton said in the release. 'Greeting the kids, the high fives and the hugs – that interaction really sets the tone for their entire day. It's been a privilege to be part of that.'
Towne Acres Principal Dr. Josh Simmons said Hilton has been an incredible part of the school community.
'His positive energy, dedication and the genuine connections he formed with students made a lasting impact,' Simmons said in the release. 'He will be greatly missed, but we know he will continue to make a difference in his new role at the JCPD.'
Officer Shawn Phillips started as the new Towne Acres SRO on Monday, according to the JCPD.
