Lethbridge Rebels Spring Invitational grows into premier hockey showcase
The Lethbridge Rebels Spring Hockey Invitational is celebrating its seventh year, and the event has never been stronger. What began as a modest six-team gathering has evolved into one of southern Alberta's top spring hockey showcases featuring nearly 30 teams and drawing talent from Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Montana. Organizers say the mix of competition and community makes the tournament special. We work really hard to get teams here that are a good fit,' said Fred Jack, organizer and head coach. 'But it's also a fun, special three days of hockey, especially with our skills competition and team-based events.' The short spring season brings a unique intensity to player development. Coach Ryan Lee focuses on individual motivation, game vision, and foundational skills. 'Each kid is different,' says Lee. 'We're teaching edge work, vision, and helping them understand the game better in a short time.' Story continues below advertisement Beyond the ice, the tournament is a celebration of growth. Former Rebel Chase Nielsen was recently selected in the WHL Prospects Draft, just one example of the talent emerging from the program. As Jack put it: 'We take a lot of pride in helping players progress — and we're grateful so many families choose to grow with us.'

10 Saskatoon minor hockey players chosen in 2025 WHL Draft

Article content Indeed, a number of Saskatoon hockey players were glued to their phone or computer screens even more than usual Thursday. Article content In the end, 10 of them were selected in the 2025 Western Hockey League Prospects Draft. Article content You can count Dilin Coulter-Suttie among those monitoring the draft proceedings. Article content As it turns out, he was the very first player to be plucked out of Saskatoon. Article content Article content 'It's exciting — it was stressful going through them all (draft picks) but, once I heard my name, it was exciting,' said Coulter-Suttie, a 5-foot-9, 130-pound centre from the Saskatoon Bandits under-15 AA squad. Article content Article content Coulter-Suttie got picked by the Kamloops Blazers in the third round, 53rd overall in the Prospects Draft. Article content 'I actually just saw that, that I was the first one picked out of Saskatoon,' said Coulter-Suttie, admitting that it's a 'pretty good feeling.' Article content He wasn't sure which team would select him, but it was a relief once Kamloops did. 'We got a questionnaire (from the Blazers) but that was really it,' he said, adding that he stayed home from school Thursday. 'My school had a half-day so there was really (not much school to miss). Article content 'I was just hoping to be picked by anybody.' Article content Coulter-Suttie amassed 42 goals and 45 assists for 87 points in 29 games this past season with the Bandits. Article content He said the Blazers see him as a 'two-way centre — they expect me to keep working, keep training and keep getting better like I did this year.' Article content Article content Next up was lanky 6-foot-1, 165-pound forward Linden Abercrombie from the Saskatoon Stallions U15 AA team. Article content Abercrombie was selected in the fourth round, 90th overall, by the Moose Jaw Warriors. Article content 'It feels unreal — I feel like I'll fit there pretty good,' said Abercrombie, who had 25 goals and 20 assists for 45 points in 28 games this past season. Article content He was the second Saskatchewan-born player to be selected by the Warriors this year. Article content 'I had no idea. I just saw my name and got super-excited. I stayed home from school, just waited to see my name up there. It was (a big relief to see it).' Article content Abercrombie says he was surprised that other Saskatoon players hadn't been picked yet when he was.

14 new players: Saskatoon Blades get busy in the WHL Prospects Draft, U.S. Priority Draft

Article content Article content Suter, who doesn't turn 15 until December, impressed with five goals and one assists in five games at the John Reid Memorial Tournament. Article content With the 41st pick of the U.S. draft, the Blades selecting 5-foot-8 defenceman Charles Johnson, who netted four goals and 19 assists in 59 games with the Dallas Stars Elite 14U AAA. Johnson tacked on 36 penalty minutes as well. In five playoff games, Johnson dished two helpers and added another in four games at U.S. 14U Nationals. Article content Article content Article content Article content The Blades began proceedings by sending 2006-born Tastad, Weber and their 2025 second-round pick (31st overall) to the expansion Penticton Vees in exchange of the Vees' second-round pick (24th overall) in this year's WHL Prospects Draft on Thursday. The agreement was made in lieu of choosing a Blades player in Wednesday's expansion draft. Article content The Blades were not done with the Vees quite yet. They went on to acquire Penticton's fifth-round (93rd overall) pick in Thursday's draft in exchange for 2006-born forward James. Article content On Wednesday night, Saskatoon general manager Colin Priestner pulled the trigger on yet another trade as the Blades struck a last-minute deal with the Swift Current Broncos to move up in the first round. Article content Saskatoon acquired the 15th overall pick, selecting Martinuik, while giving up the 22nd overall pick, a 2025 fourth-round pick and 2025 fifth-round pick (93rd overall) from the James trade to Swift Current.
