Vanrai police rescue girl kidnapped by boy she met on gaming app

A 16-year-old girl was rescued by the Vanrai police on Saturday after being allegedly kidnapped by a 17-year-old boy who she met through a gaming app three months ago. He has been booked under sections of the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The police said that the girl, a resident of Goregaon whose mother was a domestic help and father worked at a private company, met and began chatting with the boy through a gaming app. She was then lured by the boy and called to Varanasi a week ago, said police. He then allegedly confined her in his house. Raju Mane, senior police inspector of Vanrai police station, said that after her parents reported her missing, the police registered a kidnapping complaint and began tracing her mobile phone's location. The parents had told the police that the girl was active on social media and a few gaming sites, Mane added. Through her account on the gaming app, the police contacted some of her friends, and they informed the police about the boy. The Vanrai police then traced the location of the boy to Varanasi, and with the local police's help, rescued the girl from his house. 'Since the boy is also a minor, we have served him notice to be present before the Vanrai police for further investigation. We have booked the boy under sections of the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act,' said Mane.

Kerala Mother Throws 3-Year-Old Into River, Claims Ignorance About Sexual Abuse By Uncle

Last Updated: The mother said a disturbing dream about her daughter living with her stepmother unsettled her. She later confessed to killing the child out of fear for her future In a tragic case from Thiruvankulam in Kerala's Ernakulam, the mother of the three-and-a-half-year-old girl who was thrown into a river told police she was unaware that her husband's relative had been sexually abusing the child. According to an Indian Express report, the police have revealed that the young girl endured months of sexual abuse by her paternal uncle. The mother stated that her husband had abandoned her, remarried, and taken their daughter with him. She said she had reportedly a disturbing dream about the child living with her stepmother, which deeply unsettled her. During questioning, the mother confessed to killing her daughter out of fear for the child's future. She also revealed that her husband and his family had isolated her, and even the children avoided her, causing immense emotional distress. She further testified to having had a traumatic experience while staying at her husband's house. Meanwhile, the investigation team has been expanded to 22 members, including four women officers and three female sub-inspectors. While the murder took place under the jurisdiction of the Chengamanad police station, the rape occurred within the Puthenkurish station limits. The police said that the uncle admitted to repeatedly raping the child. During the postmortem, doctors found evidence of sexual abuse and reported suspicious wounds and marks on the child's body. Based on this information, the Puthenkurish police conducted an investigation and took the accused into custody. He confessed to the crime during detailed interrogation. The incident came to light on Monday, May 19, when the mother (35) reportedly threw her daughter into a river. The child, who was in her mother's custody, went missing, prompting the father to file a police complaint. Initially, the mother stated that the child went missing while they were on a bus traveling from a local Anganwadi to their home in Aluva. However, a detailed police investigation and CCTV footage confirmed that the child was last seen with her. During further interrogation, the mother confessed to throwing the child off the Moozhikkulam bridge. The child's body was later recovered during a search operation. 'We have acted upon the report and a case under the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) case has been registered based on it," Ernakulam (Rural) Superintendent of Police M Hemalatha was quoted as saying in the Indian Express report. The report states that the girl's parents had a tense relationship, and the suspect, who is the father's younger brother, resided nearby. Senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and former minister KK Shailaja criticised the incident in a Facebook post. 'When our families turn into closed private spaces where family members live without any social commitment, our children are left to face extreme cruelty. We need enlightenment about children's rights and the elders' responsibility towards them. The entire society should stand against this kind of behavioural disorders," she said in the post.

Kerala minor, thrown into river by her mother, was repeatedly sexually abused by uncle

A minor girl in Kerala who had been thrown into a river by her mother was subjected to months of sexual abuse by her paternal uncle, the police have said. According to the police, the child's mother, a 35-year-old woman, had been arrested Tuesday hours after she had reported the child missing from a bus they were travelling in from a local Anganwadi to their home. After her arrest, she allegedly confessed to the police that she had thrown her daughter into a river on their way back, following which the child's body was retrieved. But an autopsy of the body has now revealed that the child had been allegedly subjected to repeated sexual abuse over a period of time. It is yet unclear if the mother knew of this alleged abuse. 'We have acted upon the report and a case under the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) case has been registered based on it,' Ernakulam (Rural) Superintendent of Police M Hemalatha said. According to the police, the girl's parents had a strained relationship and that the suspect, the younger brother of the father, lived in the family's home vicinity. The suspect has since been arrested, and statements of their relatives have been taken, the SP said. Senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and former minister KK Shailaja condemned the incident through a post on Facebook. 'When our families turn into closed private spaces where family members live without any social commitment, our children are left to face extreme cruelty. We need enlightenment about children's rights and the elders' responsibility towards them. The entire society should stand against this kind of behavioural disorders,' she said in the post.

Child rights commission expresses shock over lack of action relating to children's safety in residential schools

The officers of Shivamogga district had a tough time answering the chairperson and the members of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights during a review meeting in Shivamogga on Tuesday. The members of the commission, at one point, expressed shock over the lack of action with regard to the safety of children in residential schools and opined that they were disappointed with the implementation of the Karnataka State Child Protection Policy 2016. The review meeting was convened under the commission's chairperson, K. Naggan Gowda. He and the members reviewed the responsibilities and schemes handled by various departments, including women and child development, education, social welfare, and health. While reviewing the children's safety measures in residential schools, the members raised the issue of alleged child sexual abuse reported in a hostel in the district a few months ago. A watchman posted at the hostel allegedly sexually abused several girls in the hostel. The officers of the Social Welfare Department failed to furnish details on the action taken against the staff members, whose negligence led to the crime. Unsatisfied with the response, the members took the officer to task. They opined that they were under the impression that in Shivamogga, being one of the developed districts, the rights of children were well protected. However, the actual situation was opposite. The officers of the Health Department did not have data related to surprise inspections at scanning centres, stillbirths, immunisation among children aged above 10, among other issues. The members felt that the officers had come with no preparations for the meeting. Many officers failed to answer questions related to their responsibilities as per the child protection policy and the provisions of the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act, 2012. Deputy Commissioner Gurudatt Hegde, zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer N. Hemanth, members of the commission Shashidhar Kosambe, Thippeswamy K.T., S. Manju, Venkatesh, and Aparna M. Kolla were present.
