AG Campbell awards funds to organizations for gun violence prevention programs

BOSTON (WWLP) – Massachusetts Attorney General (AG) Andrea Campbell has awarded approximately $1 million to ten organizations across the state, to be used on gun violence prevention and education programs. This funding was provided through the AG Office's Public Health Models for Gun Violence Prevention Grant, as part of AG Campbell's ongoing efforts to curb gun violence in the community and increase awareness of the issue as a public health concern. The AGO said that each year, an average of 257 people die from gun violence in Massachusetts, and another 648 are wounded. Black individuals are 20 times more likely to die by gun homicide in Massachusetts, and from 2019 to 2023, 53% of gun deaths in the state were suicides. AG Campbell said that she is committed to combating these numbers across the Commonwealth, using evidence-based programs to implement public health approaches and interventions that she hopes will become mainstream practice in healthcare settings. 'Everyone deserves to live in a safe community free from the horrors of gun violence, and I'm proud to support these ten organizations doing the work to prevent gun violence across our state,' Campbell said. 'Through these grants, we're empowering community organizations with the tools and resources they need to address this public health crisis and working towards a future where no family has to feel the pain of losing a loved one to firearms.' The AGO selected the following ten organizations to receive funding: Behavioral Health Network – Springfield Berkshire Medical Center – Pittsfield Boston Medical Center – Boston Brockton Public Schools – Brockton Making Opportunity Count – Fitchburg Massachusetts Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence – Boston Open Sky Community Services – Worcester Pa'lante Transformative Justice – Holyoke Samaritans – Boston We Are Better Together Warren Daniel Hairston Project – Roxbury WWLP-22News, an NBC affiliate, began broadcasting in March 1953 to provide local news, network, syndicated, and local programming to western Massachusetts.
